Strawbs : Nomadness 1975

Nomadness is a studio album by English band Strawbs. It was their last album recorded for A&M Records and their first with no full-time keyboard player since 1970's Dragonfly. Indeed, Strawbs would not feature a full-time keyboard player until 1978 when Andy Richards joined the band. All the tracks are timed at less than five minutes giving the album a lighter, less 'epic' feel in contrast to the previous three studio albums.

Musicians

Dave Cousins : lead vocals, backing vocals, acoustic guitar, dulcimer, banjo
Dave Lambert : lead vocals, backing vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Chas Cronk : backing vocals, bass guitar
Rod Coombes : backing vocals, drums, acoustic guitar

with

Tony Carr : congas
Jack Emblow : accordion
Tommy Eyre : piano, clavinet, synthesizer John Lumley : Saville – synthesizer
John Mealing : piano, organ, electric piano
Rick Wakeman : electric harpsichord
Tom Allom : cymbalum

THE GOLDEN SALAMANDER

The bird had silver wings, my friends,
And reached out for the sky
It found its wings were broken,
It had lost the right to fly.
The pink- eyed salamander
Changed its colours for the day
It changed from white to purest gold
And left the stag at bay.

Now I am but a poor man
In the apple blossom state,
I choose to fly where'er I please,
The stag must needs a mate.

My golden salamander,
You must take me as I am.
I cannot change my colours,
I am but a simple man.

The golden salamander
Had become the rite of spring
The silver bird made promises
That scarcely meant a thing
They told the wicked huntsman
Where the stag had run to rest.
Now the elderly survivor
Knew this was not for the best

He opened up his heart
And prayed for peace for all mankind.
He asked a fortune teller
But found out that she was blind.

My golden salamander,
You must take me as I am.
I cannot change my colours,
I am but a simple man.

The clouds were passing over,
There was little sign of rain
The sun was slowly rising
From its slumberdown again.
The stag had run to cover
In a copse beside the lake
The huntsman broke the silence
And the birds began to wake.

The fortune teller smiled
As the survivor spoke of fate.
He thanked her for her interest
But knew it was too late.

My golden salamander,
You must take me as I am.
I cannot change my colours,
I am but a simple man.

A MIND OF MY OWN
Politician's fighting hard to win,
Getting a good position
So he won't have to lose again.
The battle's always on,
Working against disgrace,
He has to win you over.
Well it's always the case,
Ends up saving face.

Delegations, flying in, Happiest relations, Smiling faces, shaking hands.
The battle's always on,
Working against displacement.
They have to win them over,
If it's only a case
Of saving space.

No don't bother telling me,
I can see it for myself.
I was born with a mind of my own, And I intend to keep it free.

Still the seasons come and go,
Bad influences pile up,
Like the dirty driven snow.
Turn off the news, I really don't want to know.
If there was anywhere left to go,
Well I think I'd want to go,
'Cause I really don't like the show

Do you still believe them ?

Leonard Cohen : More Best Of 1997

Leonard Norman Cohen, (born 21 September 1934) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963. His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality and interpersonal relationships

He is extremely well regarded by critics for his literary accomplishments,
for the richness of his lyrics, and for producing an output of work of high artistic quality over a five-decade career.

Over 2,000 renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded.

Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters.

From May 2008 to December 2010 Leonard Cohen was on the major comeback world tour, the biggest in his musical career, giving 246 shows in Europe, Australia, Canada, Israel and United States.

A latecomer to recording at 34 , Leonard Cohen could have been the object of an undergra
duettet's infatuation : A wrinkled , wordy and worldly wise father figure with a dirty min d , the Serge Gainsbourg of the English - speaking world .

Cohen's own lugubrious performances of songs discussing loneliness , love and hate , deleivered with minimal accompaniment , lasted him well through a series of albums in to the mid - 1970's .

When Punk arrived he was dismissed ( What a Shame !!!) , as a borindg old fart , but a tribute album released in 1991 found Nick Cave , The Pixies and R.E.M all lining up to pay their respects .

The band :" Sisters Of Mercy " took their name of a song by Leonard Cohen .
He said :

" IT TOOK POVERTY , NOT COURAGE , TO GET ME PERFORMING . AS A NOVELIST I HAD GOOD REVIEWS
BUT NO CAREER "

LEONARD COHEN LYRICS

EVERYBODY KNOWS

( ARTWORK BY URBAN ASPIRINES )

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over

Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor,

the rich get rich
That's how it goes

Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied

Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby

Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful

Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never

Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming

Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through

From the bloody cross on top of Calvary

To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Jan Garbarek + The Hilliard Ensemble : Mnemosyne 1999

Jan Garbarek (born 4 March 1947, Mysen, Norway) is a Norwegian tenor and soprano
saxophonist, active in the jazz, classical, and world music genres.

Garbarek began recording for ECM in the early '70s and, although he had opportunities to play with Chick Corea and Don Cherry, his association with Keith Jarrett's European quartet in the mid-'70s made him famous, resulting in the classic recordings My Song and Belonging.

His style incorporates a sharp-edged tone, long, keening, sustained notes, and generous use of silence.

Garbarek, whose sound is virtually unchanged since the 1970s, collaborated with the Hilliard Ensemble in 1993 (a vocal quartet singing Renaissance music) and the result was a surprisingly popular recording.
He is also a pioneer of ambient jazz composition

Garbarek's more meandering recordings are often labeled as New Age music, a style generally scorned by more orthodox jazz musicians and listeners, or spiritual ancestors thereof.

Mnemosyne (1999) with the Hilliard Ensemble

The four voices themselves now start to improvise on scraps of ancient material culled from old book bindings and the like, though it's hard to determine exactly where this occurs (probably during some passages of wordless vocalise).

The results are often pretty much the same as Officium on disc one soothing, timeless sonic frescos reverberantly recorded in the same Austrian St. Gerold monastery, with Garbarek soaring over or threading through the texture ever more sparingly.

Yet on disc two, Garbarek and the Hilliards start to move into other worlds, breaking into something more disturbing and even atonal in that ancient "Delphic Paean," the syncopated harmonies of Garbarek's own "Loiterando," or a strange-sounding Russian Psalm from the 16th century.

This is a collaboration in transition, and one hopes it will continue to evolve.

The Hilliard Ensemble is a British male vocal quartet originally devoted to the performance of early music. Founded in 1974, the group is named after the Elizabethan miniaturist painter Nicholas Hilliard.

The group was founded in 1974, primarily to explore pre-Baroque music. As the Early Music movement spread in England in the 1970s, they came to be in demand for the purity of their voices and blends and their close attention to authenticity in performing style.

Although most of its work focuses on music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, the Hilliard Ensemble also performs contemporary music, working frequently with the Estonian composer Arvo Part and including in its concerts works by John Cage, Gavin Bryars, Giya Kancheli, and Heinz Holliger.

The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world's foremost male a capella ensembles. Their repertory ranges from the medieval to the modern, to which they bring a unique sound honed by years of performing together.

M N E M O S Y N E

The ensemble consists of David James (countertenor), Rogers Covey-Crump (tenor), Steven Harrold (tenor), and Gordon Jones (baritone), a basic constituency which formed in 2001. The core of the group's repertory is drawn from the ample volume of scores for four-voice ATTB ensemble, a disposition which is sometimes expanded for certain programs and especially on the records from the 1980s.

The ensemble takes a cooperative approach to program planning, while the undirected performances allow a spontaneity which is sometimes difficult to achieve in more closely controlled environments.

Based in the UK, the ensemble's historical contribution to the recorded discography of early music has been substantial, where several recordings have been among the most influential for the repertory.
Their name is taken from the English miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard (c.1537-1619), and is perhaps not incidentally related to that of former member Paul Hillier, who provided much of the early program planning before moving to the US.

The list of singers who have been members or performed with the group in the past reads like a who's who of English male voices, including Paul Agnew, David Beavan, Michael Chance, Charles Daniels, Paul Elliott, Michael George, David Gould, Robert Jones, Leigh Nixon, Mark Padmore, John Potter, Christopher Robson, and Ashley Stafford.
