Robert Wyatt : Cucooland [2003]

Born in 28 Jan ' 45 , Bristol , England . While at school he formed The WILDE FLOWERS with the HOPPER brothers , which soon spliced into two groups , CARAVAN and SOFT MACHINE . After four alboums with the SOFT MACHINE ,he estranged himself from the group in '71 , forming his own MATCHING MOLE . The previous year he released his first solo album , " The end of the year " . In the summer of '73 , WYATT was paralysed from the waist down after falling from a window , convalescing for several months at Stoke Mandeville Hospital . He returned the following year ( now confined to a wheel-chair ) , his single , a version of the MONKEES " I'm a believer " hitting the Top 30 . In 1974 he released his NICK MASON ( PINK FLOYD )-produced album " ROCK BOTTOM " . His second album " RUTH IS STRANGER THAN RICHARD " (1975) , showed an even deeper side , covering CHARLIE HAYDEN's jazz track " SONG FOR CHE " . In 1977 , he had another stab at the pop charts , a dire cover version of CHRIS ANDREWS' " YESTERDAY MAN " . He signed to indie " Rough Trade " in 1980 , releasing a number of singles prior to his comeback album " NOTHING CAN STOP US NOW " (1982) . This featured his classy re-working of ELVIS COSTELLO and CLIVE LANGER's " SHIPBUILDING " . In 1983 , through constant airplay by Radio 1 DJ JOHN PEEL , the anti-Falklands war song gained a Top 40 placing . He continued to spread his political messages through his music , although he has never been one to preach , his songs retaining an intenely quality . As of the mid -2000s , WYATT has worked in and out of the music business . In October 2007 released his new album and first for Domino Records " COMICOPERA " , with 16 tracks . Featuring a cast of musicians including BRIAN ENO , PAULL WELLER and PHIL MANZANERA .Cuckooland, Robert Wyatt's first full-length of new material since 1997's Shleep, is no less mischievous, witty, and poignant. As has become his custom, Wyatt offers a set of 16 new songs seemingly composed for a wide array of musicians including Annie Whitehead, Eno, David Gilmour, Tomo Hayakawa, Karen Mantler, Phil Manzanera, Paul Weller, and others he enlisted to record it. The album is divided into two halves.
