Radio Birdman was one of the first Australian independent bands to carry the punk label, along with the Saints. They were formed by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in Sydney in 1974. The group influenced the work of many successful, mainstream bands, and are now considered instrumental in Australia's musical growth.

This is primal (and prime) Radio Birdman, with Deniz Tek and Rob Younger firmly ensconced in the eye of this guitar-fueled hurricane. Tek's originals are pretty strong, especially the grimy tale of urban desolation "Murder City Nights" and the noisy freak-out "Descent into the Maelstrom." One of Australia's great rock & roll bands in all of their glory.

Aloha Steve and Danno begins with the sound of waves crashing on the beach – appropriate, as it came to be an anthem for Australia's surfing community as well as an inspiration to several generations of aspiring musicians. One of rock's greatest drum intros kicks in, followed by "hit it, Steve" in the background, a bellowed "ALL RIGHT!" from vocalist Rob Younger and a ferocious riff from guitarists Deniz Tek and Chris Masuak. It's pure distilled energy, tapping a very unlikely source – the theme song from the original US police procedural TV series Hawaii Five-O.

Sydney's Radio Birdman were never comfortable with the punk label, even if they were forced to record under their own steam and hire their own venues to play in. The establishment viewed them with distaste and they were forced into an outlaw stance that they had never really courted. Birdman drew their inspiration primarily from pre-punk Detroit bands such as the Stooges and the MC5, and less revolutionary artists including Blue Oyster Cult.

Guitarist and principal songwriter Deniz Tek grew up in Michigan, and he brought his love of the Detroit sound to Australia when his family moved to Sydney in the early 1970s. Tek formed Birdman in 1974, vowing that the band would play every show as if their lives depended on it.
