V.A: The Definitive Garage Beat '66 2018

Sundazed Music is an American independent record label based in Coxsackie, New York. It specializes in obscure and rare recordings from the 1950s to the 1970s. In 2000, Sundazed had a staff of 15 and two mixing studios, including a vintage audio equipment collection.

History

Label founders Bob Irwin and his wife Mary started the label in 1989. Irwin's skill at restoring old vinyl records for the (then new) CD format, attracted the attention of major labels, who increasingly solicited him to help them re-issue material from their back catalogs. He helped Sony Music release their archival Legacy Records label. Later, his restoration work included early material by the likes of Bob Dylan, Nancy Sinatra, and the Byrds. Irwin also worked at Arista for a time.

The first Sundazed releases were 1960s recordings by the Knickerbockers and the Five Americans,
and reflected Irwin's personal preference for garage rock and surf music. Later releases included the albums of the Turtles, the Challengers, Liverpool Five, and Jan and Dean's long-lost album Save for a Rainy Day. The company reissued the complete catalog of LPs by New Orleans funk pioneers the Meters on vinyl and CD. The label later ventured into country music, including extensive reissues of Capitol Records albums by Buck Owens and other acts including Jimmy Bryant. Sundazed also issued vintage jazz guitar albums through their Euphoria label.

For years, the Garage Beat ‘66 series spanned the U.S. and Canada, with each volume meticulously assembled from the original source tapes and with full participation of many of the artists.
That means this stuff has never sounded so wonderful!

Sundazed's Garage Beat '66 series of mid-'60s garage rock takes much the same approach as hundreds, if not thousands, of such compilations that have been issued since the late '70s. Each
volume has an assortment of tracks from all over North America, many of them rare, none of them national hits, and most of the acts known only within their region, if at all. The emphasis is on raw, fuzzy outrage, often inspired by (but not as polished as) the more R&B-aligned end of the British Invasion.

Garage Beat ‘66 pushes its way onto the digital scene with a legion of rail-thin kids wielding
obnoxiously loud guitars! The original army of teenage garage bands, the ones who made life worth living in the ‘60s and the heroic subjects of Sundazed’s long running series, has made their presence known. It’s the most far-reaching, legit, vintage garage-rock series ever, and we’ve culled from the piles of tape boxes a brief 49 track introduction to GB ‘66’s bruisingly upbeat screamers, longhaired R&B lunacy, and an unhealthy dose of some of the darkest, most disturbingly intense records from the summer of hate.
