The Offspring: Smash 1994

The Offspring is an American rock band from Garden Grove, California, formed in 1984.

Originally formed under the name Manic Subsidal, the band's lineup consists of lead vocalist and

guitarist Bryan "Dexter" Holland, bassist Todd Morse, guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman and drummer Pete Parada. Over the course of their 37-year career, they have released nine studio albums and experienced lineup changes, most noticeably with their drummers. Their longest-serving drummer was Ron Welty, who replaced original drummer James Lilja in 1987, and stayed with the band for 16 years; he was replaced by Atom Willard in 2003, and then four years later by Parada.

Gregory "Greg K." Kriesel, one of the co-founders of the Offspring, was their bassist until 2018 when

he parted ways due to business disputes with the band, leaving Holland as the sole remaining original member (if the band's history as Manic Subsidal is included). Kriesel was replaced by Todd Morse of H2O, who had been the Offspring's touring guitarist since 2009.

The Offspring is often credited—alongside fellow California punk bands Green Day, Rancid, Bad

Religion, NOFX, Pennywise and New York City band Jawbreaker
—for reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the 1990s. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling punk rock bands in history.

The Offspring signed with Epitaph Records and released two albums for the independent label, Ignition (1992) and Smash (1994). Smash, which contained the band's first major hit "Come Out and Play",

propelled pop punk into the mainstream and holds the distinction as one of the best-selling albums released on an independent record label, selling over eleven million copies worldwide.  The success of Smash attracted attention from major labels, including Columbia Records, with whom The Offspring had signed in 1996.

After the release of Smash, and armed with a newly expanded income, the band decided to buy out the

rights to their first album. Holland and Kriesel then created their own record label Nitro Records and started signing bands. One of their first releases was a re-release of the band's 1989 debut album The Offspring. The label also signed a number of punk bands including the Vandals, Guttermouth, Jughead's Revenge and AFI. Soon after, Nitro Records became solely Holland's responsibility.

SMASH  1994

Smash is the third studio album by American punk rock band The Offspring, released on April 8, 1994, by Epitaph Records. After touring in support of their previous album Ignition (1992), the band recorded

their next album over two months at Track Record in North Hollywood, California. Smash was the band's final studio album to be produced by Thom Wilson, who had worked with them since their 1989 eponymous debut. This also marks the first album where Holland is credited to playing the guitar as opposed to vocals only.

Smash was the Offspring's introduction into worldwide popularity, and produced a number of hit singles, including "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem", and "Gotta Get Away". Along with Green Day's Dookie, Smash was responsible for bringing punk rock into the mainstream, and helped pave the way for the emerging pop punk scene of the 1990s. As a fan favorite, the album received generally positive reviews from critics and garnered attention from major labels, including Columbia Records, with whom the band would sign in 1996.

GENOCIDE  LYRICS

Our lives run different ways
Through the rain I see you in the sun
Our star shines anyway
If you wish upon it we are one

One, Two, Three, Four
Dog eat dog
Every day
On our fellow man we prey

Dog eat dog
To get by
Hope you like my genocide

I find it such a shame
Through the pain I see things as they are
We're served up on a plate
The pedestal is high enough to fall
And if in time
We can see the errors of our ways

Would anyone change it anyhow?
Our time is up...
One, Two, Three, Four
Dog eat dog
Every day
On our fellow man we prey
Dog eat dog
To get by
Hope you like my genocide

Dog eat dog
Every day
On our fellow man we prey
Dog eat dog
To get by

Hope you like my genocide
I bet you'd only run
If you saw what goes inside our own
I bet you'd lead the way
If it were up to you to decide
But it's not

Dog eat dog
Every day
On our fellow man we prey
Dog eat dog
To get by
Hope you like my genocide

Hope you like my genocide
Like a silver flame
Like a suicide
Like killing boy
One, Two, Three, Four
Mmmmm... I especially enjoyed that one. Let's see what's next.
