Misfits: 4 CD Box Set

The Misfits are an American horror-themed punk rock band from Lodi, New Jersey. Formed in early 1977, they took the band name from Marilyn Monroe's last film and in fact, thanked the cast of the movie on the back of their first record. The founding members were: Glenn Danzig on vocals and

electric piano, Jerry Caiafa (Jerry Only) on bass, and Manny on drums. Their first release on their own label, Blank Records, didn't reflect the characteristic anger and rebellion of most "punk" records, but instead a more brooding and sinister, yet romantic side lingering beneath. Following the single, Danzig and Only recruited a new drummer and added a guitar player and pursued the horror-based punk rock direction that they are known for. Danzig and Only presided over several line up changes, eventually culminating with Jerry's younger brother, Paul (aka Doyle) becoming the band's permanent guitarist.

They are often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk and other

musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. The group was founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, by vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist Glenn Danzig, and drummer Manny Martínez. Jerry Only joined on bass guitar shortly after. Over the next six years, membership would change frequently with Danzig and Only being the only consistent members.

Danzig's first recruit was drummer Manny Martínez, who later saw a bass guitar in the back of Jerry

Caiafa's car parked at his neighbor's house. Caiafa had recently received the bass as a Christmas gift, and when Martinez invited him to join the band, Caiafa accepted despite having only practiced his instrument for two months. Caiafa and Danzig would remain the only consistent members of the Misfits until the group's dissolution in 1983.

The trio of Danzig, Martínez, and Caiafa rehearsed for three months without a guitarist, using Danzig's

electric piano to provide the songs' rhythm. They recorded their first single, Cough/Cool, which they released through their own label Blank Records in August 1977. Caiafa's surname was misspelled on the record's sleeve, prompting him to insist that in the future he be credited as "Jerry, only Jerry". "Jerry Only" became his pseudonym for the rest of his career. The band played their first two performances at CBGB in New York City, followed by other local performances over the following two months.

In August 1977, guitarist Frank Licata joined the band under the pseudonym Franché Coma, allowing Danzig to phase out the electric piano and focus on singing while pushing the band's sound in a punk

rock direction. Danzig and Only deemed Martínez unreliable and replaced him with drummer Jim Catania who went by the nickname Mr. Jim. The band found a recording opportunity when Mercury Records wished to use the name Blank Records for one of its subdivisions and offered Danzig thirty hours of studio time in exchange for rights to the name. Danzig accepted, and in January 1978 the Misfits entered a New York recording studio to record 17 songs, 14 of which were mixed for the proposed Static Age album.

During this time period, they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement.

The Misfits disbanded in 1983, and Glenn Danzig went on to form Samhain and then Danzig. Several

albums of reissued and previously unreleased material were issued after the group's dissolution, and their music later became influential to punk rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock. After a series of legal battles with Danzig, Only and Doyle regained the rights to record and perform as the Misfits.

They formed a new version of the band in 1995 with singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud.

This incarnation of Misfits had more of a heavy metal sound, and released the albums American Psycho (1997) and Famous Monsters (1999) before dissolving in 2000. Jerry Only then took over lead vocals and recruited former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena and former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone for a Misfits 25th anniversary tour.

In September 2016, for the first time in 33 years, Danzig, Only, and Doyle reunited for two headlining

shows as the Original Misfits at that year's edition of Riot Fest, along with drummer Dave Lombardo and second guitarist Acey Slade. The Original Misfits lineup continued performing sporadically through 2019.

[ Jay Canes 2000 May 9, 2021

The definitive collection for Danzig era Misfits material. The highlight of this set is the "Sessions" disc (disc 3) which includes 30 tracks which are either long out of print 7in versions or previously unreleased versions of classic Misfits tracks. It is a must have for serious Misfits collectors.

In addition to the exclusive material, this set inlcudes all of the Danzig era albums & tracks - remastered. The only exceptions being the "Walk Among Us" album which could not be included

because it is under license to Warner Bros. Luckily, most casual Misfits fans already have this album and if not, you should. The "Walk Among Us" disc (in its case) even fits perfectly inside the coffin box - almost as if it were made to fit (I'm not sure if it does in the limited edition box). The only other outstanding Danzig era material are the 3 bonus tracks released on the "Static Age" stand alone CD in 1997.

You might be wondering why Caroline Records would not to include the 3 bonus tracks in this box set since it does include the "Static Age" album (disc 4). Well they did not do it to rip you off. The version

of "Static Age" included in this box is the original 1978 mix of the album (including the original static intro & outro tracks). Although recorded in 1978 at the Static Age sessions, "She", "Spinal Remains", & "In The Doorway" were never mixed. Not many people realize this but when Caroline Records released "Static Age" separately in 1997 after it made its debut 8n this box, they remixed the album and in tbe process were able to finally mix those 3 tracks.

Although the box omits those songs, it does include the original 1978 mix. I have both versions and I

prefer the original mix heard in the box set. The remix lowers the bass and raises Glenn's vocals too much IMHO. These recordings of "She" & "Spinal Remains" are included elsewhere in the box in (yet another) remixed form. But if you want "In The Doorway" or you are just a diehard completist (like myself), you will need to purchase "Static Age" separately (or just track the 3 songs down online).

Aside from "Walk Among Us" & the 3 aforementioned tracks (all of which can be found easily

elsewhere) this box set has all of the Danzig era material - remastered. When you factor in the 30 tracks which are exclusive to this set (including the rare Misfits version of "Spook City U.S.A."), it puts this "coffin" a notch above most box sets and makes it well worth the price.]

DIE, DIE MY DARLING  LYRICS

Die, die, die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty mouth

I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing you in Hell
Don't try to be a baby
Your future's in an oblong box, yeah

Don't try to be a baby
Should have seen it a-comin' on
Don't try to be a baby
I don't know it was in your power

Don't try to be a baby
Dead-end girl for a dead-end guy
Don't try to be a baby
Now your life drains on the floor

Don't try to be a baby

MOMMY, CAN I GO OUT AND KILL TONIGHT?   LYRICS

Singled out the kids who are mean to me
Get straight A's but they still make fun
I don't give a-
I'll laugh last
Stayed in every night

Do my homework so I'll be smart
Girls all say I'm a little fuck
Mommy I'm a good boy
Mommy I'm a fuckin' savior
Mommy I'm alive

Mommy, can I go out and kill tonight

Rip the veins from human necks
Until they're wet with life
Razor-blades love teenage flesh
An epidermoty
I'll bring back a souvenir
For it's my mommy's dream
Can I go out and kill tonight, kill tonight
Killed a girl on lovers' lane
I kept her toes and teeth
Every night I stalk around until I find my keep
I'll bring back a souvenir
For it's my mommy's dream

Can I go out and kill tonight, kill tonight

Killed a girl on lover's lane
I kept her toes and teeth
Every night I stalk around until I find my keep
I'll bring back a souvenir
For it's my mommy's dream

Can I go out and kill tonight, kill tonight,
Kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight
Can I go out and kill tonight, kill tonight
Kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight, kill tonight

Mommy!

STATIC AGE (Recorded 1978)  (1996)

Static Age is an album by the American horror punk band Misfits, recorded in 1978. Although it was the first album the band ever recorded, it was not released in its entirety until 1996. In August 1977 The Misfits released their debut single "Cough/Cool" on Blank Records, a label operated by the band's lead vocalist Glenn Danzig. Several months later Mercury Records issued a Pere Ubu record on their own Blank Records imprint, unaware that Danzig held a trademark on the name. The parties came to a settlement, with Danzig accepting thirty hours of studio time for his band in exchange for the rights to the Blank Records name. In January and February 1978 the Misfits, then consisting of Danzig, guitarist Franché Coma, bassist Jerry Only, and drummer Mr. Jim, recorded seventeen songs at C.I. Recordings in New York City with engineer and producer Dave Achelis. Due to time constraints, the band recorded the songs live in the studio with only a few takes and very few overdubs. Ultimately fourteen of the seventeen tracks produced during the sessions were assembled for the Misfits' anticipated debut album, to be titled Static Age.
