Various: The Psychedelic Sixties Music EP Collection 2003

VARIOUS The Psychedelic Sixties Music EP Collection (2003 French exclusive limited edition 56-track 24-Bit digitally remastered 14-CD single set, compiling some of the rarest and most sought after garage & psych EPs and singles, originally released in France between 1966 & 1969, including 13th Floor Elevators [currently rated at £1200+!!], We The People [£400-500], Electric Prunes, Shadows Of Knight, Count Five and many more! Each disc is presented in a card wallet repro of the original sleeve, with unique 'vinyl look' disc, housed in superb hinged lid 5" x 5" box!)

[And here we go, with 14 E.P.s by ten smoking, '60s psychedelic heroes, issued in France in glorious 24-bit sound, with individual picture sleeves for each one. This is one cool artifact. Here, the Thirteenth Floor Elevators kick it off with a slippery looking sleeve and are represented by four smoking tracks: "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Reverberation," "Fire Engine," and "Tried To Hide." They are followed by the Seeds, the Five Americans, the Electric Prunes, the Shadows of Knight, and We The People, with two EPs each; Music Explosion, Count Five, Shakespeares, and Syn. Those with one disc have two singles paired on a disc, while the others have recordings issued that way in Europe. This is one of those nifty, price-friendly sets that collectors die for, and it happens to have a boatload of great music that one might already have, but not in this way. This is a fetish project worth its price.

CD 1: THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR ELEVATORS

The 13th Floor Elevators was an American rock band from Austin, Texas, United States, formed by guitarist and vocalist Roky Erickson, electric jug player Tommy Hall, and guitarist Stacy Sutherland. The band was together from 1965 to 1969, and during that period released four albums and seven

singles for the International Artists record label.
The Elevators were the first band to refer to their music as psychedelic rock, with the first-known use of the term appearing on their business card in January 1966. The 2005 documentary You're Gonna Miss Me specifically credits Tommy Hall with coining the term "psychedelic rock", although artists such as the Holy Modal Rounders and the Deep had described their music as "psychedelic" earlier. Their contemporary influence has been acknowledged by 1960s musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Chris Gerniottis of Zakary Thaks.

CD 2: THE SEEDS

The Seeds were an American psychedelic garage rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965. The band's classic lineup featured frontman Sky Saxon, guitarist Jan Savage (born Buck Jan Reeder),

keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge. In 1968, the band changed their name to Sky Saxon and the Seeds, with Savage and Andridge departing the band. They went on to release a handful of fruther singles, with Hooper also departing at some point before splitting up in circa 1972. In 1989, the original lineup of the band reformed for a handful of live dates in the US.
In 2003, Saxon reformed the Seeds with original guitarist Jan Savage (who departed part way through a European tour the same year due to ill health). Releasing 2 further studio albums, the band continued to tour the US, UK and Europe up to Saxon's death in 2009.

CD 3: THE FIVE AMERICANS

Five Americans was a 1960s American rock band, most famous for their song, "Western Union", which reached number five in the U.S. Billboard chart and was their only single to chart in the Top 20.
The Mutineers formed in Durant, Oklahoma (Southeastern State College) in 1962. The band members crossed paths at the university, and began performing a repertoire of Bo Diddley and Duane Eddy standards within the campus. In 1963, the band recorded their debut single, "Jackin' Around", in Dallas, Texas, an instrumental which received extensive airplay in their college. The British Invasion influenced The Mutineers to include Beatles numbers to their repertoire, a change in outfitting, and a

slight emphasis to vocals. However, their most impactful acquisition was their utilization of the Vox Continental electronic organ, a later highlight of the group's sound. While in Dallas, the band achieved prominence playing as a frequent attraction in a venue called The Pirate's Nook. There they came to the attention of Abnak Records, whose president John Abdnor took the group under his wing. Shortly thereafter, the band identified themselves as the Five Americans.
For a short while after their five top singles "I See The Light", "Western Union", "Sound of Love", "Evol - Not Love", and "Zip Code" were released, they toured. However, their manager, Jon Abdnor Sr., president and owner of Abnak Records and Bankers Management and Services Insurance Co., was allowed control of their finances.
The Five Americans broke up in 1969 and went their separate ways after their single "7:30 Guided Tour" stalled at number 96 on the Billboard Hot 100.
After Abdnor's death in 1996, all rights to their songs should have reverted to the original group, but Sundazed Records bought the original tapes. The Five Americans are now receiving their share of the sales and publishing royalties.

CD 5: THE ELECTRIC PRUNES

The Electric Prunes are an American psychedelic rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965. Much of the band's music was, as music historian Richie Unterberger described it, possessed of "an eerie and sometimes anguished ambiance." It mainly consisted of material by songwriters Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz, though the group also penned their own songs. Incorporating psychedelia

and elements of embryonic electronic rock, the band's sound was marked by innovative recording techniques with fuzz-toned guitars and oscillating sound effects. In addition, guitarist Ken Williams' and singer James Lowe's concept of "free-form garage music" provided the band with a richer sonic palette and exploratory lyrical structure than many of their contemporaries.
The band was signed to Reprise Records in 1966 and released their first single, "Ain't It Hard", in the latter part of the year. Their first album, The Electric Prunes, included the band's two nationally charting songs, "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" and "Get Me to the World on Time". With the appearance of their second album, Underground, the band was more free to create their own material. However, the original group disbanded by 1968.

We the People was an American garage rock band from Orlando, Florida, that was formed in late 1965

and professionally active between 1966 and 1970. Although none of their singles charted nationally in the U.S., a number of them did reach the Top 10 of the local Orlando charts. The band are perhaps best remembered for their song "Mirror of Your Mind", which reached the Top 10 in a number of regional singles charts across the U.S. during 1966. The song has subsequently been included on several compilation albums over the years.

CD 9: THE MUSIC EXPLOSION

The Music Explosion was an American garage rock band from Mansfield, Ohio, discovered and signed by record producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz. The quintet is best known for their number two hit, "Little Bit O' Soul", that received gold record status by the RIAA. Written by John Carter and Ken Lewis, who had previously written big hits for The Ivy League and Herman's Hermits, the song (Laurie Records No. 3380, subsequently reissued on Buddah Records) was the band's only top 40 hit. This single paved the way for tours with contemporaries like The Left Banke and The Easybeats.

"Little Bit O' Soul" has been subsequently covered by several bands including The Ramones; Dodging Susan; and 2 Live Crew, who sampled the melody. On its own, the flip "I See The Light" (featuring a surf guitar bridge) was covered by The Fourth Amendment and had a resurgence on some stations in the Midwest four years later.
The production team of their sole album, Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz, wrote several of the band's tracks which were blatant re-writes of existing songs. Bassist Burton Stahl acknowledged these claims.
Lead singer Jamie Lyons (born James Lewis Lyons on January 31, 1949 in Galion, Ohio) also recorded several solo singles on the Laurie label while still recording with the group. His first single, "Soul Struttin'", became a Northern Soul hit in several Northeast regions.
Jamie Lyons died of heart failure at his home in Little River, South Carolina on September 25, 2006, at age 57. The band continued touring in festivals with a new lead singer. Drummer Bob Avery later became a member of Crazy Elephant.

CD 10: COUNT FIVE

Count Five was an American garage rock band, formed in San Jose, California in 1964, best known for their hit single "Psychotic Reaction". The band was founded in 1964 by lead guitarist John "Mouse" Michalski (born 1948, Cleveland, Ohio) and bassist Roy Chaney (born 1948, Indianapolis, Indiana). The two were high school friends who had previously played in several short-lived bands, most notably a surf rock group named The Citations. As the British Invasion's influence took effect, the band changed in musical direction. After going by the name The Squires for a short time, along with several

line-up changes, the Count Five was born. John "Sean" Byrne (1947–2008, born Dublin, Ireland) played rhythm guitar and performed lead vocals; Kenn Ellner played tambourine and harmonica, while sharing lead vocals; and Craig "Butch" Atkinson (1947–1998, born San Jose, California) played drums. The Count Five were recognizable for their habit of wearing Count Dracula-style capes when playing live.
"Psychotic Reaction", an acknowledged cornerstone of garage rock, was initially devised by Byrne, with the group refining it and turning it into the highlight of their live sets. The song was influenced by the style of contemporary musicians such as The Standells and The Yardbirds.
By 1969, the Count Five had broken up, but their memory was immortalized in a 1971 essay by rock journalist Lester Bangs, entitled "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung." In the essay, Bangs credited the band for having released several later albums (after Psychotic Reaction): Carburetor Dung, Cartesian Jetstream, Ancient Lace and Wrought-Iron Railings, and Snowflakes Falling On the International Dateline — each displaying an increasing sense of artistry and refinement. However, none of these subsequent albums actually existed except in Bangs' own imagination.

CD 11: SHADOWS OF KNIGHT

The Shadows of Knight is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois, that plays a version of British blues influenced by their native city. When they began recording in 1965, the band's self-description was "the Stones, Animals and the Yardbirds took the Chicago blues and gave it an English

interpretation. We've taken the English version of the Blues and re-added a Chicago touch," to which rock critic Richie Unterberger commented: "The Shadows of Knight's self-description was fairly accurate."
Initially formed in 1964 as simply the Shadows, the band learned in spring 1965 of an existing British group, the Shadows. Whiz Winters, a friend who worked for their manager, Paul Sampson, in his record shop, came up with the name "The Shadows of Knight" to tie into the British Invasion in music of that time, and because all four of the band members attended Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, whose sports team had the name the "Knights".
They released three albums in their first five years of existence.

CD 14: THE SYN

The Syn are an English band that were active from 1965 to 1967, and then reunited as a progressive rock band in 2004. The band was founded by Steve Nardelli, Chris Squire, Andrew Pryce Jackman, Martyn Adelman and John Painter. Chris Welch, in his book, Close to the Edge: The Story of Yes wrote, "The Syn were very similar to Yes in fact. It was very much a precursor of Yes." The roots of

The Syn are in an earlier north London R&B band called High Court including Steve Nardelli on guitar and his school friend George Arzimanow on vocals. The band evolved over time and, in 1965, with Nardelli now handling lead vocals and John Painter on guitar, they changed their name to The Syn.
Shortly after, however, in 1965, The Syn merged with The Selfs, so Nardelli and Painter were joined by Chris Squire (bass), Andrew Jackman (keys) and Martyn Adelman (drums). The band's first gig, at Nardelli's school, Kingsbury County Grammar School, included covers of "Heat Wave" and The Marvelettes' "I'll Keep On Holding On". Paul Korda produced his composition "Merry-go-round" as a demonstration record for the band.

  1. Kostas, since you are the king of Greek blogs regarding great music, how about the band SexBeat;

The first punk band to emerge from Crete, Greece, initially formed by Babis Laskaris and the two Sfakianakis brothers in 1985, active until 1989. Members of Sex Beat later formed Σάρκα.
Reformed in 2011 until the end of 2014.

    Looking for their compilation;
