(August 1969 - August 2022) Woodstock Festival 53th Anniversary

In August 1969, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place on a dairy farm in Bethel, NY. Over half a million people came to a 600-acre farm to hear 32 acts (leading and emerging performers of the time) play over the course of four days (August 15-18). Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, the Who, Janis Joplin and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were among the line-up. Woodstock is known as one of the greatest happenings of all time and –perhaps- the most pivotal moment in music history.

Joni Mitchell said, “Woodstock was a spark of beauty” where half-a-million kids “saw that they were part of a greater organism.” According to Michael Lang, one of four young men who formed Woodstock Ventures to produce the festival, “That’s what means the most to me – the connection to one another felt by all of us who worked on the festival, all those who came to it, and the millions who couldn’t be there but were touched by it.”

THE  WHO

By Wednesday, August 13, some 60,000 people had already arrived and set up camp. On Friday, the roads were so clogged with cars that performing artists had to arrive by helicopter. Though over

100,000 tickets were sold prior to the festival weekend, they became unnecessary as swarms of people descended on the concert grounds to take part in this historic and peaceful happening. Four days of music… half a million people… rain, and the rest is history. In 1969, the country was deep into the controversial Vietnam War, a conflict that many young people vehemently opposed. It was also the era of the civil rights movement, a period of great protest and unrest. Woodstock was an opportunity for people to escape into music and spread a message of unity and peace.

water and adequate sanitation, the overall vibe there was harmonious. Looking back, some people attribute the lack of violence to the large number of psychedelic drugs being used. Others believe hippies were simply living out their mantra of “making love, not war.” In fact, more than a few couples at Woodstock took that command literally and made love whenever and wherever the mood hit.

JANIS JOPLIN

Thirty-two musicians, a combination of local and world-famous talent, performed at Woodstock. Around 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15, Richie Havens took the stage and played a 45-minute set. Havens was followed by an unscheduled blessing by yoga guru Sri Swami Satchidananda. The other performers on day one were:

Bert Sommer

Arlo Guthrie
Joan Baez

Baez famously played the end of her set in a torrential downpour. Day one wrapped up around 2:00 a.m. on August 16.

Day two officially began around 12:15 p.m. Day two’s line-up was:

John Sebastian
Keef Hartley Band
Santana
The Incredible String Band

Day two ended around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, August 17.

Day three began around 2:00 p.m. Joe Cocker was the first musician to perform. The remaining line up included:

Joe Cocker
Country Joe and The Fish
Ten Years After
The Band
Johnny Winter
Blood Sweat and Tears
Crosby Stills Nash and Young
Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Sha Na Na
Jimi Hendrix

JIMI  HENDRIX

Hendrix was the last musician to perform at Woodstock. Rain delays prevented him from taking the stage until early Monday morning and by the time he went on, the crowd had thinned to around 25,000 people.

Musicians who declined to perform at Woodstock included:

Simon and Garfunkel
Led Zeppelin
Bob Dylan
The Byrds
The Moody Blues
The Doors
Roy Rogers
John Lennon
Chicago Transit Authority
The Rolling Stones

Woodstock is perhaps best described by Max Yasgur, the humble farmer who lent his land for the

occasion. Addressing the audience on day three he said, “…You’ve proven something to the world…the important thing that you’ve proven to the world is that a half a million kids, and I call you kids because I have children who are older than you are, a half a million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music and God bless you for it!”

JOAN  BAEZ

The festival has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history as well as a defining event for the counterculture generation. The event's significance was reinforced by a 1970

documentary film, an accompanying soundtrack album, and a song written by Joni Mitchell that became a major hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Matthews Southern Comfort. Music events bearing the Woodstock name were planned for anniversaries, which included the tenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth, thirtieth, fortieth, and fiftieth. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine listed it as number 19 of the 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

VARIOUS - WOODSTOCK GENERATION (5CD) 2009

This five-disc set is a truly odd one, presenting, at least in the broadest sense, the music of the so-called Woodstock Generation, and as it appears to be defined here, that would mean rock and pop singles released between 1966 and 1971.  But then Weton-Wesgram isn't attempting a scholarly overview of the period, obviously, so you're left with an extremely wide interpretation of what "Woodstock Generation" might mean, and at the very least, all the music you might need for an eccentric, nostalgic, and goofy theme party.

  1. Kostas today you struck. I can imagine that many people will be happy. There is a defenitive Woodstock box i think over 30 cds.
is avaible. I've been looking for the record for a long time, unfortunately so far in vain. I personally don't like the Woodstock festival. Way too big and many of the bands were bad. Hendrix how boring, G. Dead don't know a concert before where they played so badly, Joplin already without Big Brother & the holding Company and for me at this point it was already of great interest .....The Jefferson
Airplane are some of the few bands that are really good were.
Especially from the box, groups like Quill, Keef Hartley Band, Sweetwater, Bert Dommer... would really interest me live the obscure and rare ones.

I watched 2 Joni Mitchell documentaries for the 78 birthday today.
The 1st J. M.- Hippies Folk Goddess(an idiotic title), the pictures and interview segments are most interesting. The German language commentary full of pathos and cliches, is hard to bear. (The later J. M. from 1975 no longer interests me).
The 2nd J. Mitchell Isle of Wight 1970,.Also a horrible festival the people were full of Acid, crazy and aggressive and the J. M. was as she said herself thrown to the lions.
    J. M. not only brilliant musician but also very beatiful.
I myself have never attended a big festival. I would have hated it.
The best concerts i habe seen were
in Santa Barbara California in the first half of the seventies in a small park in front of maybe 200 people.

    1. This is one of the longest comments in my blog. I agree with you about the festivals. I Prefer small festivals than the big ones, but sometimes you have to go at the big concerts if you want to see the band that you want.

    2. I hope my comment was not only long but also interesting for you.
Of course it has to be Bert Sommer and not Dommer, excused typing error.

    3. I heard from a friend a Grateful Dead Head why the Dead played so badly at the Woodstock, in case anyone is interested. Flow in by helicopter to strange. Then the rain electrified their guitars and they got electrified and the mood was bad too.

    4. That was a momentous post by Kostas and I have to applaud his effort, though I do agree with the general gist of the comments by Josef that the event has been overhyped since then and perhaps the performances weren't the best. It happens when you try to get so many bands into a giant pot where the conditions are chaotic and the crowd is too much for the groups to communicate with. Thanks to the film and the way it depicted "hippie life" it got a cult status and I guess we are in the minority.

I have been at similar events where a myriad of local groups go on stage for a couple of songs and once you see further than the uplifting presence of the crowd you can see how mediocre the performances are. Granted, those events can't be compared with Woodstock in terms of groups or attendance or importance, not even by a mile, but my point is that getting too much into a restricted time is not good for the music.

  6. Here’s an email I sent a blogger 3 years ago

    July 1969

WOW - seeing the ad in the Arts section of the sunday NYT. The full line-up of each of the 3-days festival, from the top to the bottom of the page.

    August 15 - Friday

As we enter the Thruway in Albany, we were alone, no traffic. We didn’t know the venue had changed. At the merging of the Mass turnpike, sudden stop, and for the next 70 miles, it was "stop ´n ´ go" until... we couldn’t get any further. We left the car beside a very old barn.

It took us a 2-hour walk to reach the site, with a little drizzle now and then.

At the back of the site, on top of the hill, Chip introduced Joan Baez. The sound system was outstanding, as if we were at Carnegie Hall, the lights beaming from the towers showed where Joan was on stage, we were that far.

Friday night, it was a grassy site. On the opposite hill, there was a campsite with "100s" of campfires... & the mix of Joan, the light rain, the campfires behind the stage and the smell of the grass... sublime moment.

We got back to the car. Waking up, we were 2 dozen sleeping everywhere in the barn.

Saturday was a beautiful day, with a few cloudy periods. Not a drop of rain... for us. We got back to the site in the afternoon, Keef Hartley was playing, and we noticed the change. It was a disaster area. The hill was all mud, and the smell... a dumping site. A few days like this, and an epidemy would develop. We left.

In the evening, stopping at the first service area on the Thruway, we were greeted by a screaming employee yelling to no one - "What the hell is going on, it’s the 4th time I’m mopping the floor in the last hour"... we laughed... not telling him why.

It was a peaceful and good vibes event despite the problems.

We were caught by surprise & excited to witness this moment in such a scale.

... one story ... among the million who went - yeah - there were that many scattered all over, off the site.

    - hippies... for the media. 99.99% were not.

    - boomers’ music... created by the generation before - war babies. Most were borne between ´39-‘45.

    - In "Gimme Shelter" at Altamont, the ridiculous 3-feet high stage...

Back home on Sunday, didn’t think much about it, until the film came out and made it a cultural reference, since, between ´66 &´72 I saw about 60 concerts/festivals... lucky, to have lived the sixties fully.

It was a confortable rain when Joan played…

    1. Anonymous i just read your post today.
Thanks for that. I don't want to go into detail, it would take too long. Just one sentence that i particularly liked Hippies...for the media, 99,90 % were not. I thought so far a long time. The whole Woodstock concert was simply hyped up by the media.

  7. Great post about this mythic festival! I'm not agree with Joseh Kloiber in the fact the actuations of the musicians were bad. Perhaps Grateful Dead but the others? I have the 30 CDs box that gives the integrality of the concerts. Actually, I think that the music level was better in the Monterey Pop Festival.

    1. I prefer Monterey !
      Better bands and nicer music.
The only thing is that the recording quality isn't nearly as good as in Woodstock and unfortunately that's a major handicap !!!
The documentation is also not nearly as great as in Woodstock. Many bands in Montetey only recorded a few tracks.
