Various: Back From The Grave - Volume 2 (Garage Punkers)

JERRY AND THE OTHERS

Back from the Grave, Volume 2 (CD), is the second installment in the Back from the Grave compact disc-exclusive series of garage rock compilations assembled by Tim Warren of Crypt Records. It was released on August 23, 1996.

THE ROYAL FLAIRS

Its track listing differs from that of the LP version, which is part of the Back From the Grave LP-edition series, also on Crypt. In keeping with all of the entries in the series, and as indicated in the subheading which reads "Raw 'n' Crude Mid-60s Garage Punk!," this collection consists of many songs which display the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre and are often characterized by the use of fuzztone-distorted guitars and rough vocals.

THE KEGGS

Accordingly, the set generally excludes psychedelic, folk rock, and pop-influenced material in favor of basic primitive rock and roll. The packaging features a booklet containing well-researched liner notes written by Tim Warren which conveys basic information about each song and group, such as origin, recording date, and biographical sketches, usually written in a conversational style that includes occasional slang, anecdotes, humorous asides.

Back from the Grave is considered one of the most important and influential garage rock compilations series ever assembled. Though it takes a much narrower approach to the genre, the tracks compiled on its ten volumes are considered to be of exceptionally high quality throughout.

THE SLOTHS

Back from the Grave's influence can be seen in other series that take a similar approach to compiling garage records.

THE ILLUSIONS

Back from the Grave, Volume 2 is the second installment in the Back from the Grave series of garage rock compilations put together by Tim Warren of Crypt Records on LP.

THE HUNS

The second volume from Crypt Records' Back From the Grave series digs up more stylish, underground garage rock from '60s groups like Murphy & the Mob, the Fabs, the Hallmarks, and the Sloths. Red Beard & the Pirates' "Go On, Leave" is among the many high points on this uncompromising, entertaining garage sampler.

THE HALLMARKS

This collection consists of songs which display the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre and are often characterized by the use of fuzztone-distorted guitars and rough vocals. The set generally excludes psychedelic, folk rock, and pop-influenced material in favor of basic primitive rock and roll.

THE MONTELLS

If you've ever heard any of the other volumes, you know what I'm talking about: This is the kind of gutbucket brilliance that puts other garage rock comps to shame. There's nothin' but snarl and fuzz as far as the eye can see.
The amateurism is truly inspired, the melodies are brutally catchy, and the drums will melt your eyeballs. As for highlights... At the end of volume two (volume five on vinyl) the delivered the definitively awful (i.e., wonderful) "To Find Out." serving up with pure corrosive genius.

ROCKY AND THE RIDDLERS

The packaging features well-researched liner notes written by Tim Warren which convey basic information about each song and group, such as origin, recording date, and biographical sketches, usually written in a conversational style that includes occasional slang, anecdotes, humorous asides. The liner notes are noticeably opinionated, sometimes engaging in tongue-in-cheek insults directed at other genres of music.

JAGUARS

The packaging also includes photographs of the bands, and the front cover features a highly satirical cartoon by Mort Todd depicting revivified "rock and roll" zombies who have just emerged from the grave to "burn on a skewer" all adherents of supposedly heretical pop and progressive music which have come to prominence over the years, such as disco.

HUMANS

The set begins with "Don't Cry to Me," by Jerry & the Others, from Dayton, Ohio is set to pounding Bo Diddley rhythms and scintillating guitar parts. Murphy & the Mob from Tyler, Texas sing the highly despondent "Born Loser," which was released on Talisman Records in 1966. The set continues with "You Can't Make Me," by the Montells from Miami, Florida, who had previously recorded as H.M. Subjects (Her Majesty's Subjects).

  2. I have now re-dubbed all of Women in Rock. And now start listening again from the beginning. Had to wait for a 100 cd spindle because i was 3 short. And now a question about Joan Baez. A wonderful track. Do you know a very good representative box or anthology from her ? I heard them in the early 70s. I liked it a lot but i soon had enough of her at the time. The second track i'm listening to is the divine Joni Mitchell. A musical genius, one of the few where i can use this word wirhout hesitation, at least until my mid-70s.

    1. No I don't know a good box of Joan Baez. The second track of Joni Mitchell was covered by CSN&Young. Excellent song. She is really a genius

    5. Yes, the BOSTON Scene had excellent bands in the 60s. But unfortunately not very succesful. And again in the late 70s and early 80s.

    6. And just one more word about IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. White bird of course a wonderful track like any others on their Ist lp. But there also bad tracks on their 1st album. Her masterpiece MARRYING MAIDEN. Each track is a pearl and is one of the most beautiful West Coast albums.

    7. Kostas you excuse me now no more comments on the series. Wonderful tracks and selection. Bit i like i said never end.

    8. Last word: i'm done with Pt. 3 now. The rest in the next 2 days. (I don't have much time tomorrow). Your can't stop listening. It's unfair to always give individual tracks because almost everything is FINE. (Maybe except 2 or 3 tracks). But i want to mention in particular. Quarterflash, Sin O'Connor. And of course Dead Can Dance, Mazzy Star, Beth Orton, Sheryl Crow etc etc....
      Excellent Kostas, thank you !

    9. Josef, I always find your perseverance to listen to new music admirable.

These collections (Back From The Grave) sound like a lot to listen to, I know of some of these groups but never heard most of them.

I feel I should find more time to listen to music but somehow I never manage to. Lately I have been contemplating reading the new book about Purple Overdose but the conflicting reviews have somewhat disoriented me. Maybe I need to be at the right places for a change of mood.

    10. Anonymous i don't know the book myself. Amazing that there is a whole book about such an unknown band. Don't let meetings drive you crazy. What is going on in the individual heads is not particularly important. These are mostly misjudgments anyway. Make yoursel a picture. In any case a GREAT band.

    11. Purple Overdose was a very important Psychedelic Greek band. There are some albums in the Blog, but you can't download them. I don't know if you can find them in YouTube.

    12. Josef, the book is written in Greek and isn't easy to find. Purple Overdose was a band that came into existence in the wrong place, and the conditions were extremely unfavorable. I think that the nature of the conflicting reviews is more evidence of this. Though as you said critics often don't know what they are talking about, but in this case I think it has more to do with the personal rivalries of those involved. A sad story and the leader of the group passed away too early.

  3. The only track from Pt. 1 that is a bit annoyong is the Melanie track.
    That's not my style.

  4. To the Black Sabbath video.
Anonymous, at the risk of offending you, i would to say something about the video.
    For me this is terrible.
The band with their decadent singers, the audience as if they were zombies, the whole venue with all too many many people just awful. ( I know why i haven't been to a concert for 35 years ago). I was never a big Black Sabbath listener. I liked the 1st lp back then. But basically it was never a band for me.

    1. Josef, I had to take a guess at what video you refer to but I think I know which. I don't like big venues and I agree that Ozzy has a personality that doesn't appeal to everyone (including me and obviously you). But Black Sabbath have many great records, Vol.4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are certainly two of them. Even Ozzy by himself had some great moments, like No More Tears, always in my opinion which isn't everyone's opinion. Anyway back to Black Sabbath, they had a great rhythm section and this incredible heavy guitar sound that few groups could equal.

Now the audience, I wouldn't care if I could enjoy the music. I know that the few music venues we have here, and some of them are quite small, turn into gas chambers because everyone smokes like chimneys as it's customary here. So as long as the audience can keep their mouth shut I don't care.

    2. Anonymous yeah maybe i was a bit too strict with the band and you're right they have some good(!) records. If i hurt you it wasn't my intention. It was just releated to the video.

      Delete
    3. Josef, I wasn't the one who posted the video, but despite of considering Black Sabbath an important group I did find it difficult to watch thanks to Ozzy. The scene where he shows his buttocks to the audience is obviously one of bad taste.

  5. The decisive sentence about the video was missing: Everything is just so unbelievably ugly.

  6. Anonymous a word about critics and rezessions in general. There are many too many wrong minds. To take them seriously would be a mistake. Critics are mostly parasites on work, be in literature, music or whatever. They can't produce anything themselves but can often destroy existences with their criticsm. (There are also a few good critics, but these are the exceptions). Forget all that make yourself a picture of what is about and if it interests you hit in.

    1. Josef you are right. And in our case, living in a place with little access to information, a bit difficult to listen to new music, albums being pretty expensive for the income of most young people, not to mention the general climate against rock music, critics were the only way to learn about groups and albums, and you know the rest of the story. Now this book is not easy to find and take a look at, so I was hoping someone has read it and could give us an independent opinion.

  7. I've already read reviews because it turned out in retrospect that he hadn't even really read the book or at best just skimmed it.

  8. Something else: I just discovered beautiful "old country". CHARLIE MARIE RAMBLE ON.
At least you can listen at bandcamp. I have 1000 and more in this direction. One prettier than the others. (Kostas try it).
