TONY HAZZARD

Whimsical and hazy, also melodic and hummable, but with an omnipresent lysergic undercurrent.

MIKE BATT

We've visited this Neverland twice before, and due to the great response from our fellow travellers, we're going back for yet another trip.

THE STOICS

This time you'll meet a suitably freaked-out Irish showband, an American band transported to Paris, a family band from Fulham, a Scottish supergroup in the making, plus a whole lot more.

THE IRRESISTIBLES

The many-hued charabanc is fuelled and ready to depart. Climb aboard, wrap your paisley travel rugs around your vertically striped hipsters and let's ride.

VARIOUS - FAIRYTALES CAN COME TRUE (VOLUME 4): WE ALL LOVE THE HUMAN RACE 2009

PLASTIC PENNY

Volume 4 in Psychic Circle's series of psychedelic pop compilations is an entertaining set and a definitive keeper. Obviously, the focus of this series lies on lighter, fluffier songs, often replete with string & brass arrangements.

WAYNE FONTANA

That said, the psychedelic flag flies high on most of the 20 nuggets Nick Saloman caters here. High on the list of out-there highlights is the set's opener, Alan Dell's "The Blue Sound of Love," the ending of which is a daring (though slightly clumsy) game of stereo fading-and-phasing.

COLIN GIFFIN

Colin Giffin's "Changes in Our Time," and "Hiding Behind My Smile" by Los Iberos (from Spain) are two more prime examples of pop music being used to open and alter perceptions.

LOS IBEROS

The lighter side of the collection can be illustrated by the Haystack's "Letter to Josephine," Chris Andrews' "Maker of Mistakes," John Burness' soulful, organ-backed "I Don't Want You (Any More),

EYES OF BLUE

" or Wayne Fontana's spirited "We All Love the Human Race," a catchy song whose psychedelic content consists solely of a little echo in the fade-out.

CHERRY SMASH

This volume is a little light in terms of obscure recordings by musicians who would later become famous, although you do get the powerful "She Does" by the Plastic Penny, who at the time featured future Procol Harum guitarist Mick Grabham and future Elton John bandmembers Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson.

TIM ANDREWS & PAUL KORDA

Overall, a well-balanced collection of popsike sides. All tracks were originally released on 45s in the late '60s.

    2. Wait until tomorrow, is coming a great guitar band with an amazing album (2019). Really incredible Rock of the dead Greek underground scene.

    3. GREAT !!! The dead of the greek scene
that seems to be a myth.

    4. Josef, you put it right, the dead of the Greek scene. No group managed to work up to their potential thanks to the hostile environment. One way or another, the group ends leaving behind an album or two. Even if they manage to get some success, and then the end is even worse, as in the case of Nostradamus mentioned before.

    5. Anonymous there is a little missunderstanding. I can't even announce the end of the greek music scene for the simple reason that i don't know the circumstances. What surprised me was that you mentioned the end of the greek scene and Kostas keeps proving the opposite with new greek bands. The greek scene can't be at the very end after all. The fact the most bands can only do one or two lps is unfortunately nothing new. Look how many fantastic bands in the 60s could only do an lp. Also that the environment is often hostile has always been the cae. You can hardly imagine how much rejection people encountered in the 60s & 70s. Unfortunately, that's the injustice that so many bands have to give up early because of a lack of resonance. Partly to blame are the people who don't appreciate good music and prefer the bad and really good music will always remain a minority. That has always been the case and will not change.

    6. Josef, I guess it depends on the way you look at it. It's like saying that science is doing great in Greece because of so many Greek scientists being successful abroad, but the truth is that if they stayed in Greece chances are they would end up in a completely different way.

At least these new bands can have access to reasonably priced instruments thanks to the internet, otherwise they would be taken advantage of, having to pay exorbitant prices with no customer support. They can record and mix at a good quality thanks to technology without having to rely upon idiots. So it's easier to get an album out, and that's it.

You mention the great groups of the 60s and 70s who managed to record one album only, still there's a difference because here they wouldn't have been able to even get a gig. Now compare the most successful bands of the 60s and 70s to their equivalent in Greece, which I believe was Nostradamus, and you can understand the difference.

    7. Anonymous, i don't know the story of the Greek Nostradamus. But in principle it is the case that small countries have a much harder time on the international market than large ones. That is not only the case in music but in all artistic things, be it in literature or whatever.

    8. I don't know why you try so hard to prove us that there is no longer a rock scene in Greece, using ridiculous excuses. I don't want to get into a confrontation with you, but I speak with evidences. Today I'm already uploading a rock masterpiece of 2019. I don't care if all these bands were formed 200,000 years ago, or if they succeed financially, or how many albums they will record and how much their instruments cost. These bands exist NOW, they're recording amazing albums NOW, They're active NOW, You can see them playing live in small clubs NOW.

Who cares about tomorrow? We may be attacked by the Martians, or the second coming, or the sky may fall on our heads as the Gauls believed in Asterix. I won't tire of it any more and I won't answer you again. Your right to have whatever opinion you want, I respect it but I speak with proves: The groups I upload. ...And you still haven't seen anything. I have a lot of new material to upload.

  2. Plastic Penny was a great group, I think there was a "full" edition of all material from the group a few years ago.
