Blue Öyster Cult: 1972 - 1983

Since releasing their self-titled 1972 Columbia debut, Blue Öyster Cult have been called everything from the thinking man's heavy metal group to an occult rock band to the first pop/heavy metal act. Blue

Öyster Cult was formed in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly (a name the group would occasionally use in the 1970s and 1980s to play small club gigs around the United States and UK) in a communal house at Stony Brook University on Long Island when rock critic Sandy Pearlman overheard a jam session consisting of fellow Stony Brook classmate Donald Roeser and his friends. Pearlman offered to become the band's manager and creative partner, to which the band agreed.

Blue Öyster Cult's longest-lasting and the most commercially successful lineup included Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloom (lead vocals, "stun guitar", keyboards, synthesizer), Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar), Joe Bouchard (bass, vocals, keyboards), and Albert Bouchard

(drums, percussion, vocals, miscellaneous instruments). The band's current lineup still includes Bloom and Roeser, in addition to Danny Miranda (bass, backing vocals), Richie Castellano (keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Jules Radino (drums, percussion). The duo of the band's manager Sandy Pearlman and rock critic Richard Meltzer, who also met at Stony Brook University, played a key role in writing many of the band’s lyrics.

They have sold more than 25 million records, and they released a handful of singles during the '70s that

became classic rock radio standards, among them "Don't Fear the Reaper," "Burnin' for You," and "Godzilla." Lyrics that crisscrossed science fiction, the occult, and horror films; their layered, three-guitar attack; expansive vocal harmonies; and almost inimitable balance between crunchy riffs and infectious hooks resulted in the most listenable metal of the '70s.

Their third album, 1974's gold-certified Secret Treaties, established them as mainstays on FM radio,

and they were enshrined as arena rock headliners worldwide with 1975's double-live On Your Feet or on Your Knees, 1976's platinum-certified Agents of Fortune, and 1978's platinum live outing Some Enchanted Evening.

The hits dried up only in the early '80s, after their 1981 gold album Fire of Unknown Origin and its smash single "Burnin' for You." BÖC's lineup fragmented during the late '80s, leaving the creative core

of Donald Roeser (aka "Buck Dharma") and lead vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Eric Bloom at the helm of its revolving cast of players. There were only two studio outings during the '90s, with 2001's Curse of the Hidden Mirror their last studio date for two decades before the 2020 release of The Symbol Remains.

Secret Treaties is the third studio album by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released on April 5, 1974 by Columbia. It features the same band members and production team as their previous album.

The album spent 14 weeks in the US album charts, peaking at No. 53. It was certified gold by the RIAA in 1992. In 1975, a poll of readers of the British magazine Melody Maker voted Secret Treaties the "Top Rock Album of All Time". In 2010, Rhapsody called it one of the all-time best "proto-metal" albums. It's the only BÖC album that does not feature a track with lead vocals sung by guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. The band also did not write any of the lyrics to the album, handing that duty to producer Sandy Pearlman, rock critic Richard Meltzer and singer Patti Smith.

4. BLUE OYSTER CULT -  ON YOUR FEET OR ON YOUR KNEES 1975 (BOX - SET)

On Your Feet or on Your Knees, Blue Öyster Cult's first live album (there would be two more), was also their first to peak inside the Top 40 best-sellers, which is more of an indication of the audience the

group was building up through extensive touring than of its quality. Songs that had a tight, concentrated impact on studio albums got elongated here, and that impact was dissipated. And the song selection left a great deal to be desired if this was to be a fitting summation of the band's career so far. Perhaps by their 1974 tour, BÖC had dropped such classics from their first album as "Transmaniacon MC," and "Stairway to the Stars," but the less impressive material from the third album was no substitute. The album did mark the first commercial release of a version of "Buck's Boogie" as well as covers of the Yardbirds' "I Ain't Got You" and Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild."

5. BLUE OYSTER CULT - AGENTS OF FORTUNE 1976

Agents of Fortune is the fourth studio album by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released on May 21, 1976 by Columbia Records. The Platinum-selling album peaked at No. 29 on the U.S. Billboard chart, while the cryptic single "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100

singles chart, making it BÖC's biggest hit. The band became a bigger concert attraction after the release of the album, in part due to extensive airplay of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", to this day a staple of rock-station playlists. Additionally, this is the only album in the group's discography to have at least one lead vocal performance by each original band member. It was also their only album to not include any songs written by Eric Bloom. However, the 2020 live release 40th Anniversary: Agents of Fortune Live 2016 adds Bloom's name to the authorship credits for "E.T.I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)."

was certified gold by the RIAA on January 19, 1978. Record World called the single "Goin' Through the Motions," which was co-written by Mott the Hoople singer Ian Hunter, a "thumping, hand-clapping pop-rocker" The cover art features Blue Öyster Cult's use of lasers in their live show at that time. A remastered version was released on February 13, 2007, which included four previously unreleased outtakes from the Spectres sessions as bonus tracks.

8. BLUE OYSTER CULT - MIRRORS 1979

After the success of 1976's Platinum Agents of Fortune, 1977's Gold Spectres and 1978's Platinum live

effort Some Enchanted Evening, the fact that Mirrors struggled to reach Gold status disappointed band and label alike. According to interviews with the band and production staff, the intent for this album was to make a high-charting record with glossy production; however, the backlash from this attempt led to the band's future pairing with Martin Birch and an attempt to return to a darker sound.

The Revölution by Night is the ninth studio album by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released

on November 8, 1983. The album was intended to capitalize on the success of Fire of Unknown Origin two years prior, hence the blend of straight-ahead rock and pop elements. This was the first BÖC album not to feature all of the band's classic members, drummer Albert Bouchard having been fired during the previous tour and replaced by roadie Rick Downey. In contrast to the success of Fire of Unknown Origin, the album failed to go Gold in the United States

    1. They are more mainstream. You have to listen to them in U-Tube before you decide. Good 😌 morning my friend. I wish you a happy Sunday.

  2. I'm currently listening to the 5 cd box BLANK GENERATION US/ CAN. PUNK 1975-1981.
I have far less than i thought because the bands i know are mostly represented here with the 45 single. I also discovered some where i will order a whole cd. Anyway, it's great punk like i love it and has a little to do with the mostly UK punk with those impossible tube vocals. But here too, there are of course exceptions.

  3. When you see lists of the best punk bands, the UK shit is at the forefront almost everywhere. My bands are still running or don't appear at all and so on EVERYWHERE, but you have to live with that.

  4. Among others BRUCE JOYNER with the UNKNOWNS represented on the box. One of my favorite at this time in all variations. A scandal that no one takes care of and finally releases as cds with many boni as possible. I have almost everything from him. You could quote and recommended almost every band here.
