Baby Woodrose: Studio Albums 2001 - 2016

Danish rock band Baby Woodrose was formed in 2001 by Uffe Lorenzen, later known under the

alias Lorenzo Woodrose. Started as a solo project and later evolved into a band.
Some records are solo recordings and some are recorded with different line-ups of musicians.
Baby Woodrose is a rock band formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2001. They take their name from the Argyreia nervosa, a plant commonly known as Hawaiian baby woodrose, which can be used for hallucinogenic effects and whose seeds are known to have psychotropic effects on those who eat them.

Baby Woodrose was started in 2001 by Uffe Lorenzen, later known under the alias Lorenzo Woodrose.

Initially Baby Woodrose was a personal side-project for Lorenzo Woodrose, who was still drummer and songwriter in On Trial then. Lorenzo recorded Baby Woodrose's first album Blows Your Mind by himself on Pan Records (re-released by Bad Afro in 2003). Later on he decided to take the project to the next level and contacted 'The Moody Guru' (Riky Woodrose, bassist) and 'Fuzz Daddy' (Rocco Woodrose, drummer).

As a power trio they recorded several more albums, the first of which was Money for Soul, released on

Bad Afro
in 2003.  Following the quick success of Baby Woodrose, Lorenzo quit On Trial in 2003, after 17 years in the band. They released a live record of their performance on Gutter Island Garage Rock Festival, Live at Gutter Island later in 2003. In 2004,  they were nominated for the Danish Music Awards in 2004, which they didn't win however. They also released Dropout!, which was an album of cover songs by other artists, such as The Savages and 13th Floor Elevators in 2004.

2006 saw the release of the follow-up studio album with the band's own songs, after their breakthrough. The album Love Comes Down was released on Playground Music Scandinavia, as the only

collaboration between Baby Woodrose and a larger record label (Lorenzo later bought the master tapes back, to re-release Love Comes Down on Bad Afro).
In 2012 the album Third Eye Surgery was released, displaying a more space rock type sound from the band, which was well received among critics and fans. Baby Woodrose released Freedom, the group's eleventh full-length, on September 16, 2016. Freedom displays a more politically outright Baby Woodrose with a powerful, distorted rock sound in the veins of Third Eye Surgery (2012).

Baby Woodrose announced a break from live concerts from the summer 2016. Since then Lorenzo

Woodrose has released a new solo album, Galmandsværk (Bad Afro, 2017) under his own name, Uffe Lorenzen, which he tours with. Some years after joining, Moody Guru and Fuzz Daddy both left Baby Woodrose. Kåre Joenson replaced Moody Guru on the bass, and for some time, Johan Lei-Gellett replaced Fuzz Daddy on drums with Adam Olsson joining on guitar. Johan Lei-Gellett and Adam Olsson (both of the surf band, The Good The Bad) were later replaced by Geronimo (drums) and Yobo (guitar), resulting in the most stable lineup in later years.

01.  BABY WOODROSE - BLOWS YOUR MIND! 2002

Blows Your Mind is the classic debut album by Baby Woodrose originally released in 2001 on main man

Lorenzo Woodrose own label Pan Records. Lorenzo wrote the songs and played all the instruments himself and although the sound is more lo-fi than usual on a Baby Woodrose album the songs are among the best he ever wrote.
The artwork by Malleus has caused controversy recently. The printer in Germany denied to print the sleeve due to the fact that they found it to be too offensive!

02.  BABY WOODROSE - MONEY FOR SOUL 2003

Alot of the album reminds me of the real 60's retro stuff that you would hear on Monster Magnet's 'Dopes to Infinity'...complete with keyboards, handclaps and tremelo effects on the guitars. The two guitars

throught the mix on this album seem to play off of each other nicely and overall is very impressive playing. If you are into Dopes to Infinity... get this one. If you like retro guitar garage stuff you might like it as well. Baby Woodrose have a little of everything... heavy fuzz-psychedelia... the works!
The songs are pretty simple, but they just have feeling, something that many bands these days are just lacking big time. This also is something that you can hardly put into words, where the feeling lies, just when you hear the songs, they have it, it's that simple!

03.  BABY WOODROSE - DROPOUT! 2004

Some of the liner notes explains the origins of the album: ”As much as we love playing a few of our

favourite songs by obscure sixties garage bands when we play live, we also think our albums should reflect the creativity of our own originals, so the four covers we did when we recorded our Money For Soul album in October 2002, quickly ended up collecting dust in the Bad Afro vaults. We also recorded six more about a year later while doing some demos for our next album and eventually agreed to collect all those covers on this fine little release”.

04.  BABY WOODROSE - LOVE COMES DOWN 2006

This album is considered by many as their 'lost album' as it was only ever released in Scandinavia. Lorenzo Woodrose (guitar and vocals), Fuzz Daddy (drums) and The Moody Guru (bass) have created a swirling, epic vibe that takes in the '60s at its soulful best and blends it up with some garage rock  There's

a bunch of keyboards and female backing vocals fleshing out the sound and Woodrose's vocal has never been more soulful and songs like "No Other Girl" and "Growing Younger" are among the most commercial he's recorded, with the latter embellished by striking 12-string guitar. It's great garage pop, with the exception of the closing title track "Love Comes Down" which draws a lysergic chalk outline around a body and hangs around at the scene of the crime for five minutes. It has a tremendous trippy feel and it's a song that merits immersion at high volume.

05.  BABY WOODROSE - CHASING RAINBOWS 2007

Lorenzo Woodrose is back with another Baby Woodrose creation. This album takes inspiration from the

Dragon Tears project and mixes it with a more psychedelic flavour of Lorenzo’s influences from the late 60’s with some rock and roll. Think Chocolate watch Band, Strawberry Alarm Clock.. Some cool special guests including Tømmerclaus, Morton Aron, a Indian musician, and others are featured… Begins with the great psych-pop number Someone to Love..The end comes with madness of your own Making, a laid back number with acoustic guitar and reminds me of some of the psych stuff of Bevis Frond. This is a

fantastic album & something completely different from what the band has made before.. dig it baby…
Baby Woodrose’s music licks from the same lysergic sugar cube as the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Guitar strings are bent into brilliant splashes of colorful sound, while the children of Aquarius stand swaying, entranced, palms turned upward, faces to the sky! HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!

06.  BABY WOODROSE - BABY WOODROSE -2009

The album presents a unique mix of melancholy, psychedelia, and grunginess. It has a very airy sound and there isn’t a single song that isn’t tinged with melancholy. Still, like Woodrose says, its punchiness comes

from more upbeat tracks like the KINKS-esque “No Mas” and “Take It.” The album also has a royal ton of psychedelic influence. The penultimate track on the album, “Scorpio,” is a good deal more brooding than the rest of the album’s material, being mostly an acoustic affair with some atmospheric keyboards in the background. The final track, “Secret Of The Twisted Flower,” is a full-out fuzzfest overflowing with trippy effects and lengthy sections of feedback.

08.  BABY WOODROSE - THIRD EYE SURGERY 2012

The Danish wonder comes up trumps again with the nine track genius of 'Third Eye Surgery'. Like all Baby Woodrose albums, a different feel engulfs the sounds and this time, the whirl of space rock psychedelic fuzz wafts through the air like a joss stick in a hippy's boudoir, all encompassed in a slight

Eastern setting. Although the trippy vibe is more than evident, Baby Woodrose never fully engulf you and make you feel like you're not on the same psychedelic trip, they merely wrap an arm around you and paint shades of mellow that take you exactly where you want to go. There is darkness on 'Third Eye Surgery' but there is also light, and that's the kind of emotional blend that breathes a lot of life into the nine songs. And of course it's the great musicianship as well as Lorenzo Woodrose's unmistakeable voice and his excellent songwriting talents that ensure that 'Third Eye Surgery' is definitely one of the psychedelic highlights in 2012"

09.  BABY WOODROSE - FREEDOM 2016

With empowering tracks like “21st Century Slave“, “Open Doors“, and “Red The Signpost“, the theme of self-liberation ripples throughout every iota of this record. The title track “Freedom“, usually associated

with the improvised 1969 Woodstock version from Richie Havens, is actually a much older song, known as a gospel tune or a negro spiritual or “slave song”. These songs exude the very equivocal elements that contribute to first freeing one’s mind and then allowing their physical body to follow and one only need to look to the lyrics of the song “Mantra” for their own personal, well, mantra or life philosophy when it comes to this record: “I can’t stop..I can never get enough”. Indeed…Can you?.
