Madness are an English ska and pop band from Camden Town, north west London, who formed in
1976. One of the most prominent bands of the late-1970s/early-1980s two-tone ska revival, they continue to perform with six of the seven members of their original line-up. Madness's most successful period was from 1980 to 1986, when the band's songs spent a total of 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, jointly holding the record with English reggae group UB40 for most weeks spent by a group in the UK singles chart during the 1980s.
With a sound rooted in ska, but also showing the influence of classic British pop, Madness have enjoyed a long career full of hit singles, influential albums, and satisfied concert audiences. They were known
initially for blending ska rhythms with catchy melodies and a nutty sense of humor on their 1979 debut album One Step Beyond, one of the seminal works of the 2-Tone era. The core of the band formed as the North London Invaders in 1976, and included Mike Barson (Monsieur Barso) on keyboards, Chris Foreman (Chrissy Boy) on guitar and Lee Thompson (Kix) on saxophone. They later recruited John Hasler on drums and Cathal Smyth (better known as Chas Smash) on bass guitar. Later in the year, they were joined by lead vocalist Dikran Tulaine.
As their career progressed, they folded touches of Motown, soul, and on 1982's Madness Presents the Rise
& Fall, British pop, into their formula. A single from that album, the jaunty, Kinks-influenced "Our House" rose to the upper reaches of numerous singles charts around the globe and became an enduring classic. 2009's The Liberty of Norton Folgate was a reunion effort as pleasing as their classic '80s releases, and Madness showed no signs of slowing down, touring the world and launching new projects such as 2018's Can't Touch Us Now and 2023's The Theatre of the Absurd Introduces C'est La Vie.

03. MADNESS - 7 1981
7 (also known as Madness 7) is the third studio album by the English ska and pop band Madness.
Released in October 1981, it peaked at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart. All but one track was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas in the summer of 1981, the exception being "Grey Day" which was recorded in London earlier in the year. Although in 2011 co-producer Alan Winstanley stated in the Guided Tour of Madness boxed-set that much of the album was re-recorded in London when they returned from Nassau. The album title was band member Chas Smash's idea based on the lucky number 7.

04. MADNESS - THE RISE & FALL 1982 2CD DELUXE EDITION
The Rise & Fall is the fourth studio album by English ska band Madness, released on 5 November 1982
by Stiff Records. This album saw Madness at their most experimental, exhibiting a range of musical styles including jazz, English music hall, and Eastern influences. NME described it at the time of its release as "the best Madness record". It has often been retrospectively described as a concept album. Though the album was never released in the US, several tracks were later placed on the compilation Madness (1983), including "Our House", the band's only top 10 hit in America.

You've never heard of Madness? Where have you been living? Under a rock?
DeleteI'll gladly explain it to you, you....
DeleteI know the band's name, didn't think much of them & after listening to them briefly that impression was confirmed.
I'm not very interested in the uk scene from that period ( with a few exceptions).
A band like the Madness seems suspicious to me from the start because they were too succesful.
I'm more interests in unknown bands, which are usually better, but not always.
If i were to list everything you don't know, i'd be at it until tomorrow.
To the Unknown: First of all I don't like anonymous people. If you want to write something about my visitors, use your name. Second: I think that your comment about Josef is very offensive, so I decided not to publish it. So, I cancelled it permanently. Shame to you. If you don't like what is written on this blog, you can choose another one. You are not welcome here. And then, the the knowledge that Josef has about the music scene of the 60s and the 70s you will never discover.
DeleteThanks Kostas ! Josef
DeleteOne of our favourite bands in our high school. Their music videos were also great fun to watch. I'm keen to hear some of this bonus material. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNice....Thanks. More please.
ReplyDeleteSka and Mardi Gras go hand in hand. Big Thanks Kostas for the needful on my end as only posted live boots and various but loved the band as did MTV!
ReplyDeleteThank You ! One of my favourite of the period !
ReplyDeleteAlways loved these Camden Town boys. First saw them when they toured the debut album. The bouncy floor at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom was bouncing that night.
ReplyDeleteAren’t people funny!? Don’t like ‘successful’ bands? - such a poseur. You only care for unlistenable unpopular obscurantist noise generators then? It's a juvenile pose we all shook by the time we were 12/13! Well done anyway Kostas [and Josef] keep the flood of trolls at bay - cowardly unnamed trolls: perhaps music is not really for you!? You are certainly in the wrong place here as Kostas shares music of ALL kinds and has the broadest eclectic taste you are likely to come across anywhere in the music blogosphere. Maybe stay indoors and pin butterflies . . . . meanwhile we are all enjoying music shared and of all kinds, types, periods and genres, (successful or nay! 😂) as you were! Keep on keeping on Kostas and fans! x
ReplyDeleteThis is not Sadness. This is MADNESS!!!
DeleteTo clear up a missunderstanding, Swappers. I didn't mean that i dislike successful bands. That would be crazy. It's just that my favorite bands are the less successful ones, not on principle, i simply prefer their music. But generally speaking, the successful and the far less succesful are mixed together.
DeleteJosef
Sorry Josef! Think I got my wires crossed as comment between your good self and 'The Unknown' who Kostas got shot of as he was bring offensive (seemingly to both of you!). Bit thrown by folks saying they hadn’t heard of Madness and for info they were not immediately super successful and still remain a good jobbing ska band. Totally authentic Brit pop for sure. If folks don’t like British pop well I can’t do anything about that now can I!? Annnnyhoo no offence!
DeleteNo problem Swappers. I was initially very annoyed that ayou called me a "show- off". That's never happened to me before. I think i'm the opposite.
DeleteMadness- maybe i'm wrong. I'll check it again. I was propably too short when i listened.
Everything is okay now.
Josef
Another wonderful post. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!
