The Lime Spiders: 4 Albums 1987 - 2007

Lime Spiders were an Australian punk rock band which formed in 1979 with Mick Blood on lead

vocals. He was later joined by Richard Lawson on drums, and David Sparks on guitar. Their debut studio album, The Cave Comes Alive! was released in June 1987 and reached the top 60 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart. Their most successful single, "Weirdo Libido", was released in January that year and reached the top 50 on the related Kent Music Report Singles Chart.

In April its music video was the first ever shown on Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV music

series rage. The track was used on the 1988 feature film Young Einstein's soundtrack. The group disbanded in 1990 and in 1999 Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, noted they had provided "raucous sound mixed screaming vocals and wild, fuzz-tone guitar riffs to arrive at a mutant strain of acid punk that bordered on heavy metal".

Patrick "Mick" Blood on lead vocals, cites their influences as being 1960s garage bands with

psychedelic rock. Early fellow members included Eric Roman Grothe on guitar, Dave Guest on bass guitar, and Darryl John Mather on guitar. The band's name relates to a non-alcoholic cocktail – a combination of vanilla ice cream and lime soft drink (soda). The group's first show was supporting The Lonely Hearts on Christmas Eve 1979, which Mather later recalled: "We were absolutely horrible. So horrible that people didn't get it. I don't think I got it, either. We came back properly in late 1980".

The band recorded two singles during 1983 (released on the Slave Girl EP two years later) and signed

to Virgin Records. Lime Spiders' first album was the excellent The Cave Comes Alive!, but the following year's Volatile was a bit of disappointment, veering closer to stultifying hard rock. The group broke up after 1990's Beethoven's Fist.

THE LIME SPIDERS - THE CAVE COMES ALIVE 1987

The Cave Comes Alive! is the first album by The Lime Spiders, released on vinyl in 1987 through Virgin Records. There were three singles released from the album; "My Favourite Room" b/w "Blood

From A Stone", "Just One Solution" b/w "Drip Out", and "Jessica" (New Version) b/w "Sparks" (Live). In November 2012 FasterLouder listed The Cave Comes Alive! at No. 45 of "The Most Underrated Albums of All Time". Their reviewer Max Easton opined, "a collection of forgotten gems from one of the richest veins of Australia’s garage history... a chronically underrated and forgotten record lost in time." David Szatmary of AllMusic rated it at four-and-a-half-out-of-five stars and briefly stated, "This is the snarling debut from the punk quartet who owe a debt to the '60s."

THE LIME SPIDERS - NINE MILES HIGH 1983 - 1990 (November 5, 2002)

The bottom line is this: the Lime Spiders catalog is unavailable in the United States. This collection of 26 cuts on a single disc offers the best of the best of Mick Blood and company's Australian garage

madness on the greatest of Australian labels and one of the best reissue labels in the biz -- Raven. This quartet was obsessed with the late '60s but seemed to draw inspiration from punk as well. Included here are album tracks as well as most of the Weirdo Libido EP and covers of "1-2-5," Arthur Lee's "My Flash on You," and Barry Tashian's "Time of Day." Perhaps the Lime Spiders' most important moment is here as well: their completely unhinged "Out of Control," the single greatest track they ever cut. At the risk of hyperbole, "Out of Control" is worth the entire purchase price of this monster set. Highly recommended.

  8. Hi, the reason the Lime Spiders aren't better known is that they didn't play the media/public relations game. The Australian music journalists were treated with contempt by the lead singer. The journalists responded in kind. The fact is, they are better than many other Australian bands of their time and their music has endured where others have fallen away into oblivion. Recommended as world class.
