Various: Psychedelic States (In The 60s) Part 5 (Vol. 21-22-23-24-25)

The tracks range from folk rock to garage and heavier psych numbers, an incredible array of sounds, making for a wonderfully interesting listening experience. As always, many obscure bands are included

and serve as an excellent source for collectors, an incredible aid in their quest for lost gems and previously unknown acts alike. The sound quality of the recordings is remarkable, especially considering the rarity of many of the releases included. It is truly a futile effort to select particular tracks for specific recognition as the set includes a run of the gamut of every sort of psychedelia and beauty does indeed lie in the ears of the beholder.

21. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: FLORIDA IN THE 60s Vol. 4 2015

Totaling twenty-six tracks, “Psychedelic States: Florida In The 60’s Vol. 4” actually caters to the teen garage rock sounds of the era rather than acid-drenched dementia. Untrained and untamed, but quaking

with enthusiasm, the bands heard on the disc relied on little more than a few standard chords to carry their songs, while roller rink keyboards and thrashing drums complete the scene. Rock and roll was meant to be fun and simple, and “Psychedelic States: Florida In The 60s Vol. 4” ideally illustrates the right attitudes and motives behind the efforts of these bands whose hearts were true and whose contributions are an important part of musical history.

23. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: WEST VIRGINIA IN THE 60s 2020

The majority of songs heard on Psychedelic States: West Virginia in the 60s point towards the moody side of the pond. Low-fi production values, paired with minor key melodies, yearning vocals, squeaky

keyboards and reedy guitar riffs are indeed staples here. Comprised of a generous 29 tracks, Flys, Evil Enc. Group, Satisfied Minds, Mojos, Long Brothers and Mysterians are only a handful of the combos included in the package. Covering a wildly creative period in music that has yet to be surpassed, Psychedelic States: West Virginia in the 60s captures eager youngsters emulating the exciting sounds of beat pop, folk rock and soul with rose-colored glasses and energy to spare.

24.VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: THE DAKOTAS IN THE 60s 2020

While none of the acts appearing on ‘Psychedelic States: Dakotas In The 60s’ achieved mainstream

success, a number of these entries did net regional recognition and are remembered fondly by those who were there. Unlike recent times, back in the sixties, local radio stations supported their homegrown artists by airing their vinyl efforts and gigs were plenty, leading many bands to be looked upon as real deal superstars in and around their vicinity. Striking a taunting swagger, ‘Watch Me’ by the Tracers signs on as a memorable cut on the collection, along with a pair of brash and brawny tunes from the Embermen Five – ‘Fire In My Heart’ and ‘Baby I’m Forgettin’ You’ – as well as ‘Ride On’ from the

Torres that resonates with poptastic melodies and achingly boyish vocals. Other strong songs on ‘Psychedelic States: The Dakotas In The 60s’ are the stirring acid-laced rock of ‘I Love Life’ by the Dischords and ‘Did Ya Need To Know?’ from Dale Gregory & the Shouters, which hammers a thumping Bo Diddley inspired beat to a splash of quirky guitar and piano interludes.

25.VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: KENTUCKY IN THE 60s (2CD) 2022

The majority of selections spread across these platters creak and squeak with youthful charm and naivity. Frustration prevails, as these teens snarl, whine and sob about girls who reject their affection. Or girls they are in love with who have no clue they even exist. Simply structured songs, maximized by
THE OUTCASTS

raw-boned singing and playing, pose as picture-perfect illustrations of genuine garage rock. A couple of basic guitar chords, snaring hooks, rickety keyboard arrangements, the shaking of a tambourine and feral drumming complete the enthused energy propelling the tunes. Reams of static fuzz licks carpet ‘I’m Gonna Stay’ by the Moxies, the Clock Work Orange’s ‘Do Me Right Now’ projects an edgy urgency, ‘Say Now Baby’ from the Jades logs on as a staggering rampage of distorted jamming, ‘I Realize’ by the Casuals is highlighted by a swinging break, and the Elite UFO’s ‘Now Who’s Good Enough’ is practically a step by step rehash of ‘Louie Go Home’ from Paul Revere and the Raiders.

This volume, the 17th in the series, spotlights the raw garage bands of Wisconsin, and like the previous Psychedelic States volumes, it's heavy on spirit and energy but runs pretty low on originality (and even lower on recorded sound quality).  That Gear Fab is making this stuff available is marvelous, though,

not so much because a perfect lost rock gem might turn up one day on one of these collections (it doesn't seem likely), but because this is really the sound of suburban America singing circa 1965-1967. It's folk music of a sort, the voice of a national community that had no idea it was a community. It didn't matter if you were a garage band in Arkansas or Wisconsin, Boston or San Diego. Come Saturday night you plugged in, turned up, and pretended it was Shea Stadium. It may have been history on a very small stage, but it was history, and it rattled plenty of windowpanes.

19. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: NEW YORK IN THE 60s Vol. 3 2011

The fun here is in the verve and unabashed audacity of these bands. Tracks like “Tripsy” by Pebble Episode, the perhaps foolishly optimistic “We Got Time” by the Tweeds, and “Doctor Friend” (which

contains the unbelievable line “I know you’ve never studied medicine as such…”) by the Druids are long on punk conviction and delightfully trashy execution, but decidedly short on nuance and polish. Then there’s the track “Destruction,” which is chock-full of spooky organ, but is worth hearing mostly because the band had the inspired or, more likely, insane idea of calling themselves the Thrashing Butterflys of Divine Happiness. It was a heady time.

20. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: MARYLAND IN THE 60s 2014

Patterned after the spirit of heralded compilation albums such as “Pebbles,” “Back From The Grave,” “Mindrocker,” and “Psychedelic Unknowns,” the series points the laser beam at folks that never had hit singles, but may have been as big as the Beatles in the eyes of local fans. Or in some cases, the bands were so obscure their resumes consisted of playing only a handful of neighborhood gigs. A double album, “Psychedelic States: Maryland In The 60s” supplies a good look at an area that really hasn’t been covered much. Despite the title of the package , the majority of stuff here leans towards the garage rock side of the fence rather than surrealistic sojourns. Because these bands weren’t afforded the luxury of high-end production facilities and in certain circumstances, were still in the process of sharpening their chops, the recordings are raw and economical. But hey, that’s rock and roll, not Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Mariah Carey. Passion over polish, and enthusiasm over elegance is the name of the game.

Various: Psychedelic States (In The 60s) Part 3

Psychedelic States is a series of 1960s psychedelic rock and garage rock compilation albums, each focusing on artists from specific states. They were released by Gear Fab Records. Several states had more than one volume representing them. Several states had more than one volume representing them.

Garage rock (sometimes called garage punk or '60s punk) is a raw and energetic style of rock music that flourished in the mid-1960s, most notably in the United States and Canada, and has experienced a series of subsequent revivals. The style is characterized by basic chord structures played on electric guitars and other instruments, sometimes distorted through a fuzzbox, as well as often unsophisticated and occasionally aggressive lyrics and delivery. Its name derives from the perception that groups were often made up of young amateurs who rehearsed in the family garage, although many were professional.

11. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: OHIO IN THE 60s VOL. 1  (2005)

As usual on the albums in this fine series, there are a handful of unearthed gems, a string of game attempts, and then a trail of also-rans (some of them quite enjoyably earnest or naïve, some of them out-and-out pedestrian). Ohio was, as the CD booklet notes, a "real hot bed" of garage rock activity in the

'60s. A few bands (the Outsiders, the Choir, the Human Beinz, Ohio Express, etc.) in a slightly more pop mode even saw action on the national charts, while any number of less polished but no less potent challengers punched their way on to various local charts. That means there is a slightly higher ratio of winners-to-duds here than on other series' entries, and, as usual, those winners make the collection more than worth the cost. Running caveat: fuzz guitar rather than psychedelia (per the title) is the element that tends to connect these singles together.

12. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: OHIO IN THE 60s VOL. 2  (2005)

The second Buckeye fuzz blast in Gear Fab's ongoing series is, on the whole, a slight drop-off in quality from Vol. 1, but there is still plenty of punk and psychedelic goodness to be skimmed off the top here. You might as well start with Ohio's most popular rock band of the decade, the Dantes, and their "80-96," an awesome three-plus-minute instrumental that begins as harmonica-driven garage-beat before totally toppling head over Beatle boots down the rabbit hole. It's right up there with similar rave-ups by the Yardbirds and the Chocolate Watchband, so it's not surprising that the single came out on the

nationally distributed Jamie. Runners-up in this battle of the bands: the percussive-heavy "To Think" by the Bare Facts, one-time Dick Clark caravaners; the Baroque Monthly's (naturally) Left Banke-ish "You Are Your Only Mystery"; the brassy "She's Gonna Cry" by the Onion Rings; the moody folk-rock of the King's English's "It Could Be Bad"; and the organ scorcher "Haygirl" (note the amusing, and, considering the state's vast spreads of farmland, appropriate misspelling) by the Chylds, featuring an incredible performance by future drummer-for-hire Joe Vitale (Joe Walsh, CSNY, Dan Fogelberg). Vol. 3 to follow.

13. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: OHIO IN THE 60s VOL. 3  (2005)

Those who have heard more than one entry in Gear Fab's ongoing Psychedelic States series know at this point more or less what to expect from it: indifferently recorded 45s cut by excessively hormonal American boys doing their best regionally adjusted Beatles, Byrds, and Stones poses, and herein rescued from the filthy ashtray of rock's past by the label's dedicated archivists. One would think that a third volume focused on a single state might be more dilute than its sister volumes, but this one, Ohio in the 60s, Vol. 3, pretty much holds to the same level of consistency as the first two. It's not a consistently

high level, to be sure, but is nonetheless consistently interesting in sociological terms: which is to say, as a cultural snapshot of the acne-scarred, blue-balled, FuzzTone'ed Id of late-'60s Ohio adolescence. These records are nowhere near as significant from an artistic standpoint, of course, but in their own way may be as useful to the future aliens who conquer Earth as Alan Lomax's Library of Congress field recordings at revealing and defining a particular plot point in America's cultural story. (For instance, one can only interpret a song as boldly idiotic as the Strays' "Scratch My Egg" -- "I said baby, come on and be my banana" -- in the course of comprehending the historical context in which it was created.)

14. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: INDIANA IN THE SIXTIES VOL. 1  (2006)

Gear Fab's Psychedelic States series, which collects vintage 1960s garage rock singles on a regional, state-by-state basis, is extremely valuable in an archaeological sort of way, since these rare 45-rpm

artifacts afford an interesting glimpse into the music of a specific time, place, and demographic, and in a larger context, allow for a region-to-region comparison of the similarities and differences in the garage band phenomenon. That's the scholarly way to look at these collections. Musically, however, most of these singles are badly recorded, poorly performed, and clichéd and derivative at almost every level, which, of course, is probably why they're so prized by collectors.

15. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: ARKANSAS IN THE SIXTIES VOL. 1  (2006)

That Gear Fab is making this stuff available is marvelous, though, not so much because a perfect lost rock gem might turn up one day on one of these collections (it doesn't seem likely) but because this is

really the sound of suburban America singing circa 1965-1967. It's folk music of a sort, the voice of a national community that had no idea it was a community. It didn't matter if you were a garage band in Arkansas or Indiana, Boston or San Diego. Come Saturday night you plugged in, turned up, and pretended it was Shea Stadium. It may have been history on a very small stage, but it was history, and it rattled plenty of windowpanes.
