Lisa Gerrard And Pieter Bourke : Duality 1998

LISA GERRARD

Lisa Gerrard (born 12 April 1961) is an Australian musician, singer and composer who rose to prominence as part of the music group "Dead Can Dance" with music partner Brendan Perry.

Since her career began in 1981, Gerrard has been involved in a wide range of projects. She received a Golden Globe Award for the music score to the film "Gladiator", on which she collaborated with Hans
Zimmer on such songs as "Now We Are Free."

With respect to such work she has said :

"I sing in the language of the Heart.
It's an invented language that I've had for a very long time.
I believe I started singing in it when I was about 12. Roughly that time.
And I believed that I was speaking to God when I sang in that language."

PIETER BOURKE

Pieter Alan Bourke is an Australian composer, keyboardist, percussionist and audio engineer. From 1995 he has recorded several projects with Dead Can Dance founder Lisa Gerrard, and was a touring member of Dead Can Dance's 1996 Spiritchaser Tour. On 14 April 1998 Bourke and Gerrard issued a world music album, "Duality".

From 1993 he also collaborated with industrial musician, David Thrussell (alias Black Lung), first as part of the latter's band Snog, then together as the ambient duo, Soma. In 2001, he formed a dub reggae outfit, Secret Masters, with Brian Westbrook (aka Donnie Dub).

Bourke and Gerrard have received two shared Golden Globe nominations for 'Best Original Score', in 2000 for The Insider (1999), and in 2002 for Ali (2001).

DEAD CAN DANCE

Dead Can Dance originally formed as a quartet in 1981 in Melbourne, but in 1982 moved to London with members Gerrard, Brendan Perry and bass player Paul Erikson. Shortly after coming to England, Erikson flew back to Australia, leaving the band as a duo.

Dead Can Dance recorded eight albums on the 4AD Records recording label beginning with the self-entitled Dead Can Dance LP in 1984. The song "Nierika" became part of the opening titles for Mexican television station TV Azteca's soap opera "La Chacala". The band split in 1998, but reunited in 2005 for a world tour. In 2012, the band announced a new world tour to coincide with the release of their new album, Anastasis.

The group's debut album, Dead Can Dance, was released in February 1984. The artwork (see pictured), which depicts a ritual mask from New Guinea, "provide a visual reinterpretation of the meaning of the name Dead Can Dance", set in a faux Greek typeface.
The album featured "drum-driven, ambient guitar music with chanting, singing and howling", and fit in with the ethereal wave style of label mates Cocteau Twins. They followed with a four-track extended play, Garden of the Arcane Delights in August.

AllMusic described their early work as "as Goth as it gets" (despite the group themselves rejecting the label), while the EP saw them "plunging into a wider range of music and style".

For their second album, "Spleen and Ideal", the group comprised the core duo of Gerrard and Perry with cello, trombone and tympani added in by session musicians. Released in November 1985, it was co-produced by the duo and John A. Rivers. Raggett describes it as "a consciously medieval European sound [...] like it was recorded in an immense cathedral".

The group built a following in Europe, particullary in Greece and the album reached No. 2 on the UK indie charts.

By 1989, Gerrard and Perry had separated domestically – Gerrard returned to Australia and Perry moved to Ireland – but they still wrote, recorded and performed together as Dead Can Dance.

Anastasis is a 2012 studio album by "Dead Can Dance".
It is the eighth studio album by the band and the first after Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard disbanded in 1998.
It was officially released on 13 August 2012 by PIAS Recordings, 16 years after the group's last album, Spiritchaser. It is also the band's first album since it left 4AD Records. "Anastasis" is the Greek word for "resurrection".

LISA GERRARD And PIETER BOURKE

In 1998 Lisa recorded "Duality" in collaboration with Pieter Bourke. This album would mark the beginning of an extensive collaboration for a number of film scores, including "The Insider" and "Ali".

It was Lisa Gerrard's second post-"Dead Can Dance" album after "The Mirror Pool" from 1995.
Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry released their last album in 1996 and had officially disbanded "Dead Can Dance" earlier in 1998.

SONGS ABOUT "DUALITY"

The beginning of the song "Shadow Magnet" will sound familiar to many because it influenced, in part, the music at the beginning of the Gladiator soundtrack (music by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard).
The track "Nadir (Synchronicity)" was initially intended for use at the end of that film, however due to problems with copyright, a song 'influenced' by this track was used instead.
"Tempest" and "Sacrifice" were used for "The Insider" soundtrack.

The echoing depths that characterize Gerrard's work again appear, as much a tribute to excellent production as it is an artistic choice, and there are wondrous parts with haunting string arrangements, heavenly orchestras or the like dominating this time out.

Meanwhile, the mysterious folk/dance side of Gerrard's work remains intact, percussive instruments of all sorts to the fore, blending Arabic, Mediterranean, South Asian, and other styles into a mystic whole, as on tracks like "Shadow Magnet" and "Nadir (Synchronicity)."

Where there are rhythmless tracks, such as "The Unfolding" and the minimal beauty of "The Circulation of Shadows,"

The Nightporters : Feelin' Good 2001

Feelin' Good album by Nightporters was released Apr 24, 2001 on the Indigo label. Debut album from 1997, originally a limited release on the band's own label, now given a world-wide release by Indigo Records. Includes 8 tracks of explosive British R&B music capturing all the energy & excitement of this great act.

[ Just superb - electrifying R&B. Fantastic rhythm, energy & drive - if this doesn't get you tapping your feet & dancing, then nothing ever will. Every track excellent.
Sounds like I'm the bands manager!
We've been to see them live twice (one of the best bends I've seen live) - if we get a chance, we'll be back again and again.]

(Amazon)

This British band recorded their debut album in four days, mostly live in the studio. It's energetic bar-band R&B/rock crossover, a style that had been plumbed for decades prior to this effort, and will probably be around for as long as electric guitars are.
Consisting entirely of covers, the eight-song set is not as cliched in song choice as it could be, but neither is it that exotic, including the likes of "Hip Shake," "Rollin' and Tumblin'," "Love in Vain," and Little Walter's "Mellow Down Easy" and "Blue and Lonesome." Lead singer Ian Roberts' voice is neither that good nor colored with nuance -- qualities that are absolutely essential if you want to make your mark using both styles and material that have been around the block so often.

As a live act, it's a fair bet they're entertaining and capable of getting the joint bopping. If you're going to listen to these songs on a CD player, though, why should you settle for something like this when so many have done this sort of music (and, often, these exact same songs) with more personality and distinction? Originally released in 1997 on their own Wang label, it was reissued in 2001 by Indigo.
