Liner Notes
While pop music of the mid-to-late 1960's brought far reaching change and experimentation, the vast majority of musicians were still trying to concoct good old fashioned, pop-oriented hit records. The San Francisco Sound was promoting turning on and dropping out, but many musicians from all over the country were more interested in becoming the next Beatles, while only marginally incorporating the more radical ideas going on around them. Yet, even on the most conventional rock band records of the era, subtle changes were evident: October Country and the Merry-Go-Round infused their work with classical arrangements; while such songs as the latter's "Live" and the Cyrkle's "Turn Down Day" expressed alienation and escape rather than the traditional boy-meets-girl themes. In the case of this POP volume (one), many of the groups were directly inspired by the Beatles. When the Knickerbockers made the charts with "Lies," many refused to believe that the group was from New Jersey, insisting it was the Beatles themselves. A listen to the Merry-Go-Round's "You're A Very Lovely Woman," re-calls"Yesterday," while the band's hip suits & bushy hair that of the Fab Four. Although the Cryan Shames with "Sugar and Spice" opted to cover a song by the Searchers, the Searchers were from Liverpool and had a similar Beatle-ish sound. Even the Turtles, who originally made their mark as a folk-protest rock band, were inspired by the Beatles to develop an acid-pop sound.Year in, year out, the list of hits grows prodigiously as current chart smashes fade into the realm of "oldies." Every pop music fan knows the big hits, but how about the little ones, or the non hits; how about the record that topped the charts in Boston, but received little airplay elsewhere? Many of these records made the far reaches of the national charts, but many not at all. Yet, just because a record was not a big hit, doesn't necessarily reflect its lack of quality. The Nuggets series is dedicated to discovering and compiling those relatively obscure hits, and those "hits" you never heard.
OCTOBER COUNTRY, and their self-titled single, are a typical example. Undeniably obscure, the record received enough Los Angeles airplay to outsell the Beatles one week at Hollywood's largest record store, Wallach's Music City. It's a great record, and typical of the "discoveries" that will comprise the selections on Nuggets. Although the resulting song may have given the Beatles a run for their money in a Los Angeles record store, it failed to generate much interest around the country, and a short time later, the group disbanded. Composer Michael Lloyd has remained October Country's most visable member, having worked with the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and Cotton, Lloyd and Christian, before moving behind the scenes as a successful record producer and songwriter.
Another band from Los Angeles was THE PARADE. For the most part, the group was composed of aspiring actors who were more intent on furthering their careers in TV than they were in music. The exception was leader Jerry Riopell, who wrote, arranged and produced their music, and who maintained visability in the 1970's with solo albums and performances. Because the group didn't tour, and because their completed album was never released, not many people outside of California heard their music.
Also from the area, THE MERRY-GO-ROUND made a big name for themselves locally, but never achieved success nationally. The quartet was led by Emitt Rhodes, ex-drummer of the Palace Guard (see volume 4). After a couple of years and a half dozen singles on A & M, Rhodes became a solo artist. Very Beatle-rooted, his acclaimed 1970 debut LP was very favorably compared with Paul McCartney's first solo album, both in sound, and in playing-all-the-instruments approach. Rhodes later moved behind the scenes as a record company A & R man, and drummer Joel Larson joined the Grass Roots. Rhodes now operates a recording studio in the South Bay area.
PEOPLE had only one hit."I Love You", a cover of an obscure Zombies' album track that climbed to 14 in 1968. A couple of years later this San Jose band re-emerged with an almost entirely new line-up, and an album, "There Are People." North, in Sacramento, SPIRAL STARECASE were perfecting their Rascals influenced soul-pop approach. Although "More Today Than Yesterday" was their biggest hit, here we've opted for the more rollicking, rock band sound of "Baby What I Mean" (which, incidentally, was also recorded as the "B" side of "October Country.")
While new groups were springing up all over the West Coast, the East Coast was experiencing a similar reaction. The CYRKLE received considerable attention, as they were Beatles manager Brian Epstein's first American singing; he quickly added them to the Beatles 1966 tour package. The Cyrkle are remembered also for their two catchy Top 40 hits, "Red Rubber Ball," penned by Paul Simon, and "Turn Down Day," written by Jerry ("Here Comes Summer") Keller. After Brian Epstein died, the band was left with little direction, and the members broke up the band a short time thereafter.
THE KNICKERBOCKERS relied on an energetic, very Beatle-ish sound, that clicked with "Lies." An affable bunch who received lots of TV exposure, their appearance was disappointing, looking more like an early 60's New Jersey lounge band (which they were) then a hip Beatles-era rock band.
Saxist Buddy Randell (previously with the Royal Teens) and drummer Jimmy Walker developed as solo artists, with the latter filling in briefly for Bill Medley when he took time off from the Righteous Brothers.
At the same time, the Midwest was also developing its own share of quality rock bands, including Chicago's CRYAN SHAMES, whose biggest record was "Sugar and Spice." Although the single only charted at 49 nationally, it caught the attention of Columbia Records, which signed the band and stood behind its subsequent releases, None quite had the appeal of "Sugar and Spice," however, and eventually the group was dropped from the label. Cleveland's THE OUTSlDERS enjoyed success for awhile, despite having a name that made them sound like they were on the outside looking in. During 1966 they racked up a remarkable four Top 40 records, but that was the extent of their chart activity. "Time Won't Let Me," their first single, was the only one that managed to break into the Top Ten. Although the group was forgotten by the 1980's, singer Sonny Geraci resurfaced as a member of Climax, which recorded the million-seller "Precious and Few."
For the most part, groups like the ones mentioned were straight-ahead, no frills rock bands. THE LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION were an exception, however. They wraped themselves in buckskin, and reeked of the Wild West, both in name and in dress. The group was best known for being the only other rock group to be pictured on Colgems Records' innersleeves that jacketed millions of Monkees albums. Their first record,I Feel Good (I Feel Bad)," exemplified the band's good-time, party personality. The record only mid-charted nationally, but Lewis & Clark persevered. Boomer Castleman became one of Nashville's top session musicians and later hit the Top 40 with "Judy Mae"; Michael Martin Murphy recorded several pop and country hits, including the million-selling "Wildfire."
Also related to the Monkees, were the group's main songwriting/production team, BOYCE & HART, who provided them with hits like "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Valleri." "If they can do it, so can we," and they did too, with "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight," which climbed to number eight in the winter of 1968. For the most part, the duo were more successful as writers/producers, so the Boyce & Hart "artist" concept was short lived, although they joined ex-Monkees' Dolenz and Jones, and recorded and toured in the 70's as "Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart."
THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR was originally from Dallas, but relocated to Hollywood, where they became a very popular club band. A listen to their best work (available on Rhino RNDF 201) reveals what might well have been the state-of-the-art of rock recording for that period. "Let Her Dance," included here, preceded "I Fought the Law," and was the record that established the band in Los Angeles. Phil Seymour thought enough of the song to record it in the 1980's. Unfortunately Bobby's vast promise was stopped short when he was found dead of mysterious circumstances. Group member, (and Bobby's brother) Randy tried to keep the band going under his own name, but when that failed, the remaining musicians went their separate ways. The final band included in this compilation is THE TURTLES, who were undoubtedly one of the most popular acts of the 1960's. Although the group had a ton of hits, they also released a number of single? that sound like they should've been hits, bur only managed various regional play. Such was "Can I Get to Know You Better," a bonifide Top Tenner in the group's native Los Angeles, that only managed an 89 nationally. The song came in the transition slot between the early hits, "It Ain't Me Babe" — "You Baby" and the second phase of the band's career that was kicked off by "Happy Together." While the sound of these records definitely recalls the 1960's at the same time that sound is sneaking back onto the charts. The Go-Go's records sound like they were made in the 1960's, the Romantics are clearly rooted in the era, and the Bangles second album features a close copy of the Merry-Go-Round's "Live." It seems likely that we've only seen the tip of the iceberg, and that in the not-so-distant future the elements that made up this period will once again become part of the contemporary rock scene.

He sings mainly in his native language of Dioula, in French and English, and sometimes in Arabic or Hebrew. His lyrics convey serious political attitudes and a sense of humor. In particular, he coined the French term democrature (an English equivalent might be "democratatorship") to identify some African governments.

Alpha Blondy's respect for all religions and the spirituality he derives from them can be heard on the tracks “God is One” or “Jerusalem” where he sang for unity between all religions in 1986

3. MARLENE JOHNSON

Marlene Johnson (born January 11, 1946) was the 42nd Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota and the first woman to hold that office. She was elected as the running mate of Governor Rudy Perpich, and held the position from 1983 – 1991.

Marlene Johnson was born and raised in Braham, Minnesota.

As lieutenant governor, Johnson focused on strengthening and expanding the state’s connections with the rest of the world – in trade, tourism, education, and the arts.

She was a particularly outspoken advocate of international educational exchange at the secondary and post-secondary level. She was also awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden in 1988.

4. JOHN HOLT

John Holt (born John Kenneth Holt, 11 July 1947, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer and songwriter.

By the age of 12, he was a regular entrant in talent contests run at Jamaican theatres by Vere Johns.
He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for record producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with Alton Ellis.

He achieved prominence in his home country as lead singer of "The Paragons", with whom he enjoyed a string of hits, including "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and the Holt penned "The Tide Is High" (later made famous by Blondie and also covered by Atomic Kitten). "Wear You To The Ball" was another of his hits with The Paragons, later covered by U-Roy. During his time with the Paragons, he also recorded solo material for Studio One (including "Fancy Make-up", "A Love I Can Feel", "Let's Build Our Dreams", and "OK Fred") and Prince Buster ("Oh Girl", and "My Heart Is Gone").

5. Mystic Roots

"Well, it’s been a bit of a long wait for the much anticipated second album
from the ever-popular, and once-again local band, "Mystic roots".
But have no fear reggae lovers because Cali-HI was worth the wait. The band has grown
a lot since the days of Constant Struggle, and that growth is clearly appar-
ent on this new album. Though their original sound is definitely still intact,
Mystic roots has branched out for a more worldly sound on Cali-HI. Blaring
horns, phenomenal female vocals, and a plethora of featured artists litter
the album. "

Mystic Roots Lyrics - Pass The Marijuana
album: Constant Struggle (1999)

Let's focus our discussion first on marijuana......mmm k?
Marijuana has a very distinct smell....mmm k?
I'm gonna pass around just a little tiny bit
now I want you all take a smell, so that you when
someone is smokin' marijuana near you

I said you numb my feelings and now I feel okay
Give me such inspiration to look at things another way
You help me relax at the end of my day
So if you feel like I feel, than let me hear you say

Pass the marijuana, give Jah thanks and praise today
Pass the marijuana, any old kind a way (x2)

I like it when you roll it up real nice
But lord I hate the price
I like it in a Buddha bong bout two feet long
Don't have to hit it twice and you still feel nice

Pass the marijuana, pass the marijuana my way

I said you numb my feelings and now I feel okay
Give me such inspiration to look at things another way
I said you help me relax at the end of my day,
Lord
So if you feel like I feel, than let me hear you say

Pass the marijuana, give Jah thanks and praise today
Pass the marijuana, any old kind a way (x2)

I like it when you pack it up in a pipe
And ya pass it round with the light
Make sure the mood is right, be it day or night
Let your mind take flight, make you feel so right

Pass the marijuana, pass the marijuana my way

Puff the magic Buddha here I come once again
Takin' hit number ten and representin' West Marin
I be fillin' my mind with knowledge as my lungs are filled with smoke
Cough, chokin' on the potent smoke inside my throat
From Chico, California to my home in the Bay, say
We like to smoke out every day!

I be Northern Lights smokin' hit the joint until I'm chokin',
My eyes are turnin' red and I can barely keep 'em open
The Mystic Roots be knowin' that the way of the walk is stoned
Ask Seba, Irie, Johnny Kind or Shayne'll say: "It's on"
I got the thin mustache, I need another hit a hash
Cause I smoked all my grass just got a pipe all full a ash

I'm stankin' from the dank and I can only want some more
They call me Coot from Mystic Roots just like I told ya before
Give me the green bud, cause 215 legalized
I be the ganga connoisseur I likes it crazy crystallized so

Pass the marijuana my way, and some papers so that I can roll a Jay

I said you numb my feelings and now I feel okay
Give me such inspiration to look at things another way
I said you help me relax at the end of my day,
So if you feel like I feel, than let me hear you say

Pass the marijuana, give Jah thanks and praise today
Pass the marijuana, any old kind a way
Thank god we passed 215, we legalized the green
Thank god we passed 215, we legalized the green

I like it when you roll it up real nice
But lord I hate the price
I like it in a Buddha bong, bout two feet long
Don't have to hit it twice and you still feel nice
Make sure the mood is right, be it day or night
Let your mind take flight, make you feel so right (x2)

(Whoever has the marijuana just pass it up to the front row....mmm k?)

Pass the marijuana, pass the marijuana my way (x2)

6. Eek A Mouse

Eek-A-Mouse began his music career when he was in college, releasing two roots reggae singles under his own name, which were produced by his mathematics tutor, Mr. Dehaney.

He featured on several of the live dancehall albums from the era, including the Aces International and Live at Skateland collections.
In the second half of the decade his popularity began to wane slightly, and he targeted the United States with the Assassinator album in 1985 (his first US release), produced by Anthony and Ronald Welch.

He also travelled to the United Kingdom to record The King and I the same year, the album targeted at the rock crossover audience to which he had begun to appeal to.

7. The Abyssinians

The Abyssinians are a Jamaican roots reggae group, famous for their close harmonies and promotion of the Rastafari movement in their lyrics.

The vocal trio was originally formed in 1968 by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning. Their first song was "Satta Massagana",

"Satta Massagana" was first recorded for producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in March 1969, but he decided against releasing it, seeing no commercial potential for what he saw as a song constituting cultural subversion. In 1971, the group purchased the master tapes from Dodd for 90 pounds and released it on their own Clinch label, the single becoming a massive success, prompting Dodd to release his own instrumental and deejay versions.

8. Earl Sixteen

Earl Sixteen (b. Earl John Daley, 1958, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer whose career began in the mid-1970s.

Daley grew up in Waltham Park Road, Kingston, and influenced by American soul and Jamaican artists such as Dennis Brown, began his singing career by entering local talent shows. He became the lead vocalist for the group The Flaming Phonics, playing live around Jamaica .

Daley recorded "Malcolm X" for producer Joe Gibbs in 1975 - a track written by his school-friend Winston McAnuff, and which was later successfully covered by Dennis Brown. In 1977, he joined Boris Gardiner's group,

Daley grew up in Waltham Park Road, Kingston, and, influenced by American soul and Jamaican artists such as Dennis Brown, began his singing career by entering local talent shows. He became the lead vocalist for the group The Flaming Phonics, playing live around Jamaica.

"The Rasta man is a peaceful man
cause everything he tries to do
is got to find his soul ."

9. AMPARANOIA

Amparanoia is the pseudonym of Spanish singer/guitarist Amparo Sanchez combining her first name with the word 'paranoia'.

It was also the name of the band she fronted from 1996 to 2006. Debut album, El Poder de Machin, has been described as being "bright, exuberant... with a heavy Latin influence", whereas the 2002-released Somos Viento has been called "a more acoustic blend of Cuban and reggae forms".

10. Gregory Isaacs

Gregory Anthony Isaacs (15 July 1951 – 25 October 2010) was a Jamaican reggae musician. Milo Miles, writing in the New York Times, described Isaacs as "the most exquisite vocalist in reggae". His nicknames include Cool Ruler and Lonely Lover.

International stardom seemed assured in 1978 when Isaacs signed to the Virgin Records offshoot Front Line Records, and appeared in the film Rockers, in which he performed "Slavemaster".

The Cool Ruler (which became one of his nicknames) and Soon Forward albums, however, failed to sell as well as expected, although they are now considered among his best work.

In 1981, he made his first appearance at the Reggae Sunsplash festival (returning annually until 1991), and he moved on to the Charisma Records offshoot Pre, who released his The Lonely Lover (another nickname that stuck) and More Gregory albums along with a string of increasingly successful singles including "Tune In", "Permanent Lover", "Wailing Rudy" and "Tribute to Waddy".

11. WAYNE SMITH - SLENG TENG

"Sleng Teng" is the name given to the first fully computerized riddim in Jamaican music.

The riddim, which was created by the collaboration between King Jammy and Wayne Smith, was titled "Under Me Sleng Teng."

However, in this case Wayne Smith was the one who had found the computerized sound in Noel Davey's keyboard. Together they were the ones who arranged the riddim, slowed it down, matched it to his key, and rehearsed on it before taking it to Jammys studio .

12. BOB MARLEY : RAT RACE

Uh! Eh! What a rat race!
Oh, what a rat race!
Oh, what a rat race!
Oh, what a rat race!
This is the rat race! Rat race! (Rat race!)

Some a lawful, some a bastard, some a jacket:
Oh, what a rat race, yeah! Rat race!

Some a gorgon-a, some a hooligan-a, some a guine-gog-a
In this 'ere rat race, yeah!
Rat race!
I'm singin' that
When the cat's away,
The mice will play.
Political voilence fill ya city, ye-ah!
Don't involve Rasta in your say say.
Rasta don't work for no C.I.A.

Rat race, rat race, rat race! Rat race, I'm sayin':
When you think is peace and safety:
A sudden destruction.
Collective security for surety, ye-ah!

Don't forget your history
Know your destiny
In the abundance of water,
The fool is thirsty.
Rat race, rat race, rat race!

Rat race!
Oh, it's a disgrace
To see the human-race
In a rat race, rat race!
You got the horse race;
You got the dog race;
You got the human-race;
But this is a rat race, rat race!

Ravi Shankar : Bridges - The Best Of Flac & MP3 2001

Ravi Shankar (Bengali: born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury on 7 April 1920), is an Indian musician and composer who plays the plucked string instrument sitar.

In 1956, he began to tour Europe and America playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison of The Beatles. Shankar engaged Western music by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1966, Shankar met and became friends with George Harrison, the guitarist of the Beatles.

The Beatles first employed a sitar accompaniment on the song "Norwegian Wood."
Soon, other rock groups such as "The Butterfield Blues Band" and "The Byrds" were displaying Indian influences.

George Harrison met Shankar in London in 1966 and visited India for six weeks to study sitar under Shankar in Srinagar.

Shankar's appearances at both "The Monterey Pop" and "Woodstock" festivals increased his popularity among Western youth. But Woodstock's audience mistakenly applauded him for tuning his instrument, and, with the exception of the Concert for Bangladesh, Shankar refused to perform at other pop music festivals.

The Indian music genius Ravi Shankar was for sure someone very special for the Woodstock festival. He made his first appearance to the western world at" the Monterey International Pop Festival " in 1967, followed by an invitation from Beatle George Harrison. In the wake of spiritualism and the search for new influences his music became very popular but Shankar wasn't fond of the drug-consuming and partying crowd of young people.

Ravi Shankar's music isn't the usual blues, folk or psychedelic rock music that one expects from such a festival. This traditional Indian music, adapted by Ravi Shankar and Ustad Alla Rakha, needs carful listening and openness for different and unknown kinds of rhythms and melodies.

In 1974, Shankar toured the United States with Harrison. Harrison produced two of Shankar's albums in the first half of the 1970s and described his friend as "the godfather of world music."

In 1989, he toured Europe and India with Zubin Mehta and the European Youth Orchestra. Shankar also composed and performed in a musical theater piece, Ghanashyam, in Britain in 1989 and India in 1991, and collaborated with "Phillip Glass" on Passages in 1990.
Even into the new millenium, he continued to write, perform, and tour.

This album have the title "The Best" . But I don't think so .
For my oppinion the greatest albums of Ravi Shankar are :

-Sounds Of India
-Genius Of Ravi Shankar
(And I think that are available only in rare LP's)

I had them once , but I left them in Italy , when I was a student at Bologna University in the '80's . ( Too much stuff , too much trips - I don't remember , I don't recall )

Steve Harley & The Cockney Rebel : Love's a Prima Donna 1976 FLAC & mp3

Love's a Prima Donna is an album by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, released in October 1976. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios between June and September 1976. The album reached #28 in the UK Albums Chart in November 1976.

Allmusic journalist, Donald A. Guarisco notes, "Although he created a decadent glam rocker image through early albums like "The Human Menagerie" and "The Psychomodo", Harley soon revealed a romantic heart beating beneath all the artsy sleaze on singles like "Judy Teen" and "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)".

This 1976 album, the last studio outing Harley would record under the Cockney Rebel banner, allowed him to give full vent to his romantic thoughts via "(I Believe) Love's a Prima Donna" and "(Love) Compared With You", a delicately orchestrated love ballad that manages to be touching and heartfelt without lapsing into sappy sentimentality.

(Love) Compared With You

I been trying to write this line
But the years've gone by in no time
And you know that it's not easy for a boy in love
But I had to find a clue
And it could only come from you
Like a waterfall you tingle me with your love

Chorus:

And you know that since you loved me I have everything
And you know that since you loved me it's been easy

All the things that I been through
Don't mean a thing compared with you
You can give me life forever in a moment
You carry me like a child and you're a goddess when I'm wild
When I'm desperate in black you are golden

And I confess... since you loved me I had everything
I confess that since you loved me it's been easy

And you know that since you loved me I have everything
And you know that since you loved me it's been easy

I Love you . I Love you .
I'm in love with you .
I Love you . I Love you .
I'm in love with you .
