Review by Chris Nickson [allmusic]

The Walkabouts' second collection of covers comes with a quite definite theme, a musical tour of Europe, ranging from Greece in the South all the way up to Norway. And it's most definitely a journey, one which suits the darker, more introspective, and very literate nature of this Seattle band. But the ground covered is more than geographic; not many bands could move from Greek icon Mikis Theodorakis to Krautrockers Neu! on the same record. But the Walkabouts, whose career has largely happened in Europe, handle it with aplomb, throwing up plenty of changes in arrangements and working hard to penetrate to the core of a song, even the enigmatic "Solex in a Slipshod Style," on the face of it an odd choice, coming from Dutch sampling queen Solex. A few of the writers might be familiar to Americans, like Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, but the majority of the names will be unknown -- a good thing, since the music can be judged on the interpretation, not the original version. A few famous friends, like R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Los Lobos sax man Steve Berlin add contributions, but it's the band who make it special, with Carla Torgerson's velvety voice caressing the lyrics while Chris Eckman worries his way into others. It might not be the most relaxing journey on offer, but it's one of the most rewarding, a night train across a Europe, not only through the countries, but also the hearts, minds, and souls.

Haig Yadjian: The Beast Οn The Moon 2000

Haig Yazdjian is a composer and a vocalist and a Oud player and a producer. He was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1959. His parents are Armenians from Caesarea,Cappadocia,modern-day Turkey. He has lived in Greece, which is where he began his interest in Eastern music.

His first album " BEAST ON THE MOON " was not that famous, but the second one " TALAR ",(You can find it on this Blog) ,accelerated his popularity.Yazdjian played on Loreena McKennitt's 2006 album " An Ancient Muse". Born in Siria from Armenian parents , he has been working and living for more than twenty years in Greece. It is here where he discovered the enchanting elements of the music from the East.

He can play various instruments such as the nay, cumbus, nashatkar or percurssion, but it is with the oud ( Outi ) with which he expresses his permanent musical search. This search , by the way , transcends time and geographical borders.

A musical journey through the Armenian landscape is offered to us here. Like the sound of water flowing over the stones and the sand. Kanun, taboura, flute, duduk, ney, shevi, riko, saz and daul, unite their sounds with the oud to project the vividness of the colors and scents of this land.

This feeling reaches its zenith in the song 'Kouyr Grounk', where Haig holds the leading role in the theatre of Armenian history, and aids the listener to feel this pain and anguish.

In the summer of 2000, Haig published BEAST ON THE MOON, an album that was a turning point on his musical search. During his career he has combined traditional music with new music from the East, and even with contemporary music. This combination of fresh audacity make his performances a real event for a public that is looking for the roots of traditional music with modern sounds.

In his concerts, Haig plays and sings traditional Armenian songs from his four records (TALAR, GARIN, THE BEAST ON THE MOON y YERAZ), but leaving always a space for improvisation . Those are unique moments, because the best musicians of the emerging Greek music are with him. A lot of these musicians are from the East

GENESIS - An Art Work by Kostas & Panagis

Written and directed by Kostas Pap (Urban Aspirines.blogspot)
 Fotographer : Panagis Hartuliaris Moussouris
Actors :
Adam : Nikos Anastasiadis
Eve  : Dina Perlega
This is an Art Work made in Greece by "Kostas Pap " and the photographer "Panagis Hartuliaris Mousouris" in the 1995 , presented in various galleries in Greece ( Kefalonia - Mykonos - Athens ) and in Italy
( Renfe Gallery - Ferrara ).
It's a concept art work about our origins and the creation of  Life .
Many critics ( Greek newspapers ) wrote that was heretic . (  Life on Earth was created after the visit of a spaceship from outer space ) Ezekiel .

Was released without computers or Photoshop .
This whole work was published in the Greek Art magazine " Ατυπον " in the year 1995 .

Was inspired of the Bible book of   "Genesis"
and the book of  Ezekiel : References in some holy scripture to strange flying machines have prompted , throughout history , speculation and conjecture in order to lend acceptable ,  if not rational , explanations of the phenomenon reported.

In the Bible , in Ezekiel 1, Ezekiel reported seeing a vision of a "living beings" flying from a center of a gigantic storm cloud . Some interpret his description of this entity or entities and how it moves as a Flying Aircraft , it has wheels beneath it such that "when the living beings moved , the wheels moved". "When the living beings stopped , the wheels stopped".

This art work is only an allegory of the myth and the technology , that simply plays with
fantasy .

Paul Roland : Gaslight Tales 2003

The Anthology (1980-1997) / 2 CD set
Label : Last Call
Release date : July 2003

This eccentric son of Kent is one of the most unashamedly literate singer-songwriters that you'll ever be likely to hear and this collection is rather like a version of the Victorian Strand magazine, delivering short vignettes of crime, adventure and courtly romance.  RETFORD TIMES

With tracks with titles like Knights, Nosferatu and Sprong Heeled Jack, you get the feeling this is the type of album Mary Shelley would have made if she were around in the 1970s.  SWINDON EVENING ADVERTISER

Gothic rock as cartoon.  ALTERNATIVE PRESS
PAUL ROLAND has been variously described as the last English eccentric, a Twentieth Century troubadour and a Romantic in the tradition of Poe, Lovecraft and M.R. James. His songs teem with characters, both grotesque and humorous, juxtaposed and set in music suitably atmospheric and evocative.
Paul's preoccupation with fantasy and historical themes, often set in Victorian or Edwardian England has been described as "Gothic in the traditional sense ". This compilation explores those interests. Spanning the years 1980 to 1990 it encompasses some of his delightful songs and almost stories.

PAUL ROLAND BY HIMSEL

I was born more years ago than I care to remember backstage during a performance of 'Hamlet' in which my actress mother was cast as Ophelia.
It was my mother who instilled in me the importance of stage craft which basically amounted to being well rehearsed, speaking clearly and communicating to the audience. She also nurtured my love for quaint old movies featuring quintessentially English characters such as Margaret Rutherford, Alastair Sim and Will Hay, which is by way of an excuse for my later behaviour and for my skewed view of the world.

My father was less outgoing. He was a writer who used to entertain me with his Jules Verne-styled bedtime stories featuring explorers who set off into the wide blue yonder in a balloon in search of lost continents and strange creatures. Unfortunately, his descriptions of the apparatus were so involved that I would fall asleep before the travellers reached their wondrous destination and so I was left with a fascination for invention and the spirit of adventure, but little sense of geography.

I was an only child (with no brothers or sisters to annoy) and was sent away at an early age to be educated at Dr Benjamin Twists' Prep School For The Sons of Gentlemen where I spent the lessons staring out of the window and playing war games with an unhealthy attention to military tactics and gruesome detail that can only have come from memories of a previous life.

I wasn't particularly academically inclined, although I could be relied upon to stage a melodramatic end-of-term play based on an old horror movie with myself cast as the mad doctor/monster and my friends as the hapless victims. And I was often in trouble for trying to incite my chums to go on strike under the pretext that convicted criminals were not incarcerated for as long as we were. I always considered myself to being held against my will in the educational system.

I amused myself on occasion by pretending to be dying of an incurable illness which gave me the perfect excuse for having fits during lessons that I didn't like or attacking the school bully, who was prevented from fighting back due to my affliction. Thankfully, none of the teachers had heard of Black Snake Swamp Fever, which I claimed to have caught off an uncle in Africa, so I could vary the symptoms at my whim.

I think Dr Twist and his staff were as happy to see me leave at the age of 16 as I was to go. Needless to say I was miraculously 'cured' of Black Snake Swamp Fever the day I left their establishment.

I would like to boast of having spent my childhood reading and dreaming of wondrous worlds, but to be honest I was too impatient to sit and read. Instead I would spend the school holidays racing around the grounds of our crumbling old house on my bike scaring the wits out of the servants and any tradesmen foolish enough to risk life and limb to enter Roland Towers. In the evenings I would put on shows for nanny and my tutors who applauded politely after each song or magic trick. I don't know if their appreciation was genuine or if it was because they feared what might happen if they didn't.

You see, my other childhood obsession was magicand I don't mean the kind where the conjuror pulls a rabbit out of a hat. I wanted to conjure up surprises that were neither fluffy nor friendly. Ever since my first out-of-body experience at the age of 5 or 6 I was obsessed with the occult and what lay beyond the physical world of our senses, a gift I inherited from my mother's side of the family, several of whom were psychic.

At night I would practice leaving my body and exploring the astral world. At other times I would attempt to make the lights go out in neighbour's houses or invoke elementals (creatures of the lower worlds) or create thought forms - an indulgence which came to an abrupt end when I came to my senses one night to find the room crawling with insects that I had created! Unfortunately, it was not as easy to walk away from magic as it had been to walk into it.

It was 1974 and the time of the 'Exorcist'. I happened to watch a documentary on demonic possession one afternoon and being the imaginative kid that I was I became convinced that I was possessed by the devil - which made life at school even more lively than it had been before. Fortunately my father happened to know a real magician (as he had been on a spiritual search of his own) and he convinced me that such things are not possible.

Thereafter I left the occult alone until I was old enough to know how to handle my abilities and then I allied myself firmly on the side of the angels. (If you want to know more, the rest of this story can be found in 'Investigating The Unexplained' published by Piatkus)
And then I discovered something which offered a healthy distraction - music.
Marc Bolan loomed large in my world all through my teens not only because of his extraordinary voice, but also because his early music evoked a fanciful world with magical overtones.

I didn't have time for anybody else until I started making my own records then I opened up to other influences and found my own style.
At the age of 14 I bought my first guitar and started writing songs as soon as I had learnt my first three chords. At 19 I recorded my first single and a few months later my first album.
And now, after an absence of several years, I'm tempted to return to music - if only to get it right this time!

Η Αληθινή Δημοκρατία των Steel Pulse

Καλωσορίζουμε την νέα χρονιά με την Αληθινή Δημοκρατία των Steel Pulse!

review
by Rick Anderson [allmusic]
Although the group's first three albums are generally considered their finest, there is a very strong case to be made for including Steel Pulse's Elektra debut in their core collection as well. Where Reggae Fever had found the band moving from hardcore Rasta politics into lover's rock and party anthems, True Democracy marks a return to more ideological subject matter; the cover art, which shows singer David Hinds reading the Bible to his rapt bandmates, is a dead giveaway. Their sound might be a little bit slicker than before, but it's also harder and the lyrics less compromising -- "Leggo Beast" denounces adultery over a stripped-down one-drop beat; "Man No Sober" inveighs against drunkenness; "A Who Responsible?" uses a dour trombone line to call down judgment on Babylon. But the mood is lightened somewhat by "Your House," a gorgeous love song, and by the exalted "Chant a Psalm." This is one of Steel Pulse's most satisfying and fully realized albums.

True Democracy is a roots reggae album released by Steel Pulse in May 1982. The album was recorded over 25 days in Denmark, with legendary reggae producer Karl Pitterson.

While True Democracy does see Steel Pulse return somewhat to their political roots of Handsworth Revolution and Tribute to the Martyrs, it is also more light-hearted in the vein of Reggae Fever (Caught You).

True Democracy peak at #120 on Billboard's Top Pop Albums chart in 1982.[wiki]
