The dream Syndicate : Ghost Stories 1988

Ghost Stories is the fourth studio album by the Los Angeles-based alternative rock band The Dream Syndicate. It was released in 1988, just a year before the band broke up.

The Dream Syndicate were dropped from A&M Records for disappointing sales after Medicine Show (1984), and broke up. They got back together to make Out of the Grey (1986) on Big Time Records, but the record company folded and the band retired again.

Lead singer and songwriter Steve Wynn played solo for a bit before the band reformed with the help of a record deal with Enigma Records to make Ghost Stories, released in 1988 and produced by Elliot Mazer of Neil Young fame. Mazer, apparently, thought that conflict was a positive creative force and made Wynn work while sick, and even "intentionally angered" him.

In January 1988, before the album was released, The Dream Syndicate recorded a live show in a club in Los Angeles; these recordings were produced by Mazer and they were released in 1989 as Live at Raji's. Other recordings made between 1985 and 1988 (that is, between Out of the Grey and Ghost Stories) were released in 1996 as The Lost Tapes.

Opening with the self-referential "The Side I'll Never Show," and produced by Neil Young and Crazy Horse vet Elliot Mazer, Wynn and Co. mine the dark and rusty terrain of folk and blues-rock that they ultimately made work to their advantage on this very straight-ahead rock album. Wynn's vocal style and forthright lyrics never really connected with the masses at the time, but years later, it's clear he was making music for the ages.

Ghost Stories is more like Medicine Show. That big, noisy mess also has some bluesy undercurrents that give it a familiar feel even if it’s under all that noise. And the album contains some fantastic tracks, including two unexpectedly beautiful ballads, and had two songs that might have charted if they’d been released as singles, “I Have Faith” and “Black”.

The Dream Syndicate : The Lost Tapes 1985 - 1988

The Dream Syndicate is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, originally active from 1981 to 1989, and reunited since 2012. The band is associated with neo-psychedelia and the Paisley Underground music movement; of the bands in that movement, according to the Los Angeles Times, the Dream Syndicate "rocked with the highest degree of unbridled passion and conviction."

150-gram vinyl in gatefold sleeve; limited to 500 copies. This is The Dream Syndicate's lost album, recorded in Los Angeles between their third and fourth official albums and featuring Chris Cacavas of Green on Red. This album is the missing link between their Americana sound and the Velvets spirit of The Days of Wine and Roses (1982). Studio recordings with excellent sound quality, remastered for vinyl. Includes inner sleeve liner notes by Steve Wynn and Dennis Duck. A mandatory record for all lovers of the Paisley Underground sound and Americana.

So-called because it mostly consists of sessions and takes recorded in between Out of the Grey and Ghost Stories, 3½ makes for an entertaining coda for the dedicated Dream Syndicate fan and has some points of interest for the general listener. While Precoda is understandably missed, Cutler was no slouch as a replacement guitarist, and the recordings here generally have a good, rootsy feeling to them. Most were recorded during mid-1987 with Vitus Matare manning the boards and Green on Red mainstay Chris Cacavas guesting on keyboards and vocals. Cutler throws in some okay feedback squeals and blasts, while Cacavas adds a further barrelhouse/bar band jam touch to the material, especially on the cover of Rodney Crowell's "I Ain't Living Long Like This.

Though never commercially successful, the band met with considerable acclaim, especially for its songwriting and guitar playing. Bandleader Steve Wynn reformed the band in 2012, and a fifth studio album was announced in February 2017.

These songs, many of which appear nowhere else in the DS catalog), are first-rate Steve Wynn compositions with momentum, hooks, and memorable lyrics equal to anything on Ghost Stories or Out of the Grey.
A couple did wind up on Wynn solo CDs (Killing Time, Here on Earth as Well) but if you are a DS devotee, there's enough new here to make this collection a stone cold treasure. The Best Years of My Life and It Hits You Again are especially juicy cuts, classic Syndicate sound.

The live version of When You Smile is great too, quite different from the feedback-drenched original - even slower at beginning and end, with the three-note riff played in a cheeky, defiant manner, typically approximate pitch from Steve on some notes, but overall very tight and raw at the same time.

In short, this is the sound of a hot band playing classic songs with juicy guitar work and lyrics of a quality seldom seen since the 1960s. What more do you need?

BLOOD MONEY LYRICS

Had to make a trade... wouldn't take it on faith
top of the line... beg, borrow, steal and a fast escape
something bout a house of bricks... solitude and a pint of gin
wait till the bricks are dry, and start all over again

played for a fool... what can I say? no regrets
something about finishing school... something that you ain't learned yet
blood! blood money!
blood! blood money!

Rich man drives a Lincoln... lives way uptown
says that he's been thinking... so he lays his money down
I got a big ol truck... tape deck, speakers in the back
take a walk after last call... and work it out on a sneak attack-tack yeah

Steve Wynn : Dazzling Display 1992

The Dream Syndicate is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, originally active from 1981 to 1989, and reunited since 2012. The band is associated with the Paisley Underground music movement; of the bands in that movement, according to the Los Angeles Times, it "rocked with the highest degree of unbridled passion and conviction".

Though never commercially successful it met with considerable acclaim, especially for its songwriting and guitar playing. Bandleader Steve Wynn brought the band back together for a festival in Spain in 2012, and the band began touring the United States and Europe in 2013.

Dazzling Display (1991), he relied on his steady songwriting, unique vocal style, and a bunch of friends (including Peter Buck of R.E.M.) for the recordings. Fluorescent (Mute, 1994) was a subdued, semi-folk record, but his side project Gutterball (including Bryan Harvey and Johnny Hott of House of Freaks and Bob Rupe of the Silos) was a loose and drunken rock & roll ramble.

For those who wondered what Wynn would sound like orchestrated, everything including the kitchen sink went into the making of this record. Peter Buck co-wrote "A Dazzling Display," and there's a Serge Gainsbourg cover and a hymn by Wynn's granddad. John Wesley Harding's harmonica was left uncredited on the over-the-top "Tuesday," on which Flo & Eddie and Susan Cowsill also sing while violins, cello and Buck's 12-string ring out like the bells of Rhymney. Johnette Napolitano, Russ Tolman

DRAG   Lyrics :

Saved the best for later
Came with a big surprise
when later came like a runaway train
and smacked you right between the eyes

Staring down the shadows of love
with lust and envy and greed
Well its not too hard when you realize
there's still a million things that you need

Bit her lip with precision and wit
Passed out like punctuation
Left me here and trembling
reeling from the situation

What a drag it is
Sometimes you just gotta laugh
What a drag it is

Learned my share of lessons
Held on like a loyal hound
I was torn from the roots in a cobra suit
Never never never never hit the ground

Ch.

Alibis ring tight through the night
I dont believe you but its alright
Look around and then you'll see
all the losers get in free round here

I had a dream last night
The choir was singin "We love you"
Pools of sweat that you cant forget
Place your bets
Goodnight Irene

The Dream Syndicate : The Days of Wine and Roses 1982

A classic American guitar band of the eighties . Born at the end of the Punk era , with a feel for Velvet Undergroundon The Dream Syndicate instantly became the saviours of alternative rock before tha term was commonly used .
Dream Syndicate are at the foundation (alongside the Velvet Underground , the Stooges and R.E.M.) of contemporary alternative music sheerly because at the time when most bands were experimenting with new technology , the Syndicate deigned to bring back the guitar . Fronted by Steve Wynn (b. Feb. 21, 1960) and including Karl Precoda (guitar) , Dennis Duck (drums) and Kendra Smith (bass) , the band formed in Los Angeles after Smith and Wynn had relocated there from Davis , CA . They debuted with a self-titled , unbelievably Velvet Underground-like EP on Wynn's own Down There label . It was shortly off to Ruby/Slash for Days of Wine and Roses , the most lauded record on the college charts that year . The record has been cited as influential from artists as diverse as Kurt Cobain to the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson . Live , they had developed into an assaultive guitar band prone to jamming which helped earn them the tag as leaders of L.A.'s Paisley Underground movement .

With " The Days Of Wine and Roses " they climbed to a highpoint in the critics eyes , and is still today considered a classic outside of die hard Steve Wynn fans circles .

The Medicine Show took a different direction that the raw punkish debut . It was/is on of the most lived albums among fans.

After The Medicine Show there was change in line up . Out went Kendra Smith and Karl Precoda and in came Mark Walton and Paul B . Cutler .

John Coltrane Stereo Blues

Oh keep your hands on the shades baby
no one gonna care
when the moon goes dead
oh I might have said something sometime
but I don't care what I might have said
we're gonna take it
move it
sand it down
we're gonna send it back from where it came
oh yeah yeah
gonna be all right
it's gonna be all right
I feel it, want it, know it
yeah I say yeah yeah yeah
it's gonna be all right

I got some John Coltrane on the stereo baby
make it feel all right
I got some fine wine in the freezer mama
I know what you like
I gonna take it, turn it, set it loose
we gonna learn about love on a three ply rug
hah
Gonna be all right
It's gonna be all right
I feel it
gonna be all right

Don't tell me anymore bout the
civilized world baby
it's just you and me
Oh what do I gotta do to show you
the way that it's gonna be
Gonna take it, move it, [sand] it down
gonna send it back to burn in flame
gonna be all right
it's gonna be all right
yeah
shhh it's gonna be all right
oh yeah yeah yeah all right

I got some John Coltrane on the stereo baby
make it feel all right
I got some fine wine in the freezer mama
I know what you like
I got some John Coltrane on the stereo baby
make it feel all right
I got some fine wine in the freezer mama
I know what you like
I got some John Coltrane on the stereo baby
make it feel all right
I said a man works hard all day
he can do what he wants to
At night
come on, come on...

she said Hold me tight
I don't think that's what you want
I don't think that's what you want
She said Hold me tight
I don't think that's what you want
Don't think that's what you want
Hold me tight, hold me tight
hold me tight, hold me tight
Gonna be all right

MERRITVILLE

Matthew with the pug nose
Caught me with his sister in the wheatfield
Got a couple buddies
Tied me up and threw me in his Oldsmobile
I said "Matthew are you crazy?"
As he started closing in for the kill
Matthew slowed the Olds to 10
Left me here to die in Merrittville

There's a game they play in the summertime
There's a game they play when it's hot outside
And I wonder why
They left me here in Merrittville

Sally with the narrow hips
Cut the rope and said that she could clear my head
She led me to the dirt path
All the way back to her daddy's shed
I said, "Sally who'd believe
That we'd have to come so far for a thrill."
Sally let me go that night
Weak , tired and spent in Merrittville

There's a game they play in the summertime
There's a game they play when it's hot outside
And I wonder why
They left me here in Merrittville

William with the holy book
Stopped me as I stumbled down the road today
He said "Get on your knees, boy.
It's time you learned the right way to pray"
I said "William, I had no idea
That the lord had such a will
William drove his point across
And left me here to burn in Merrittville

This is one of the best songs
in the history of ROCK Music
Forgive me !
I'm in love with this song
