Bubble Puppy: A Gathering Of Promises 1969

 

Psychedelic rock group formed in 1966 in San Antonio, Texas, USA, by Rod Prince and Roy Cox. Looking to form a "top gun rock band" based on the concept of dual lead guitars, a staple of southern rock that was highly unusual on the psychedelic music scene, Prince and Cox recruited Todd Potter; a gymnast,

saxophone player and guitarist. With the addition of Danny Segovia, the original line up of Bubble Puppy was complete. The name "Bubble Puppy" was taken from "Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy", a fictitious children's game in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Bubble Puppy's live debut was as the opening act for The Who in San Antonio. After several line-up changes, the final roster for Bubble Puppy settled at Rod Prince and Todd Potter on lead guitars, Roy Cox on bass guitar and David "Fuzzy" Fore on drums. In 1967, Bubble Puppy moved to Austin, Texas and signed a recording contract with Houston-based International Artists, home to the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola. 
                                    

Though typically overshadowed by International Artists labelmates the 13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy arguably enjoyed the greatest commercial success of all the Texas psychedelic bands, scoring a Top 20 pop hit with "Hot Smoke & Sassafras." Their raw, garage-psych sound soon landed the group a

deal with the famed Texas label International Artists, which issued Bubble Puppy's debut LP, A Gathering of Promises, in 1969; despite the runaway success of "Hot Smoke & Sassafras," subsequent singles including "If I Had a Reason," "Days of Our Time," and "What Do You See?" stiffed, prompting the quartet to change its name to Demian. A self-titled effort followed in 1971 on ABC/Dunhill, but when the single "Face the Crowd" garnered little attention, the band dissolved.

The Virgineers: The Virgineers 1999 + Singles

 

On first mention, The Virgineers sounds like the name of some folk revival group who would be playing Kingston Trio numbers at state fairs. One listen to their self-titled, and, so far, only album, though, reveals

a group (“virgin ears,” get it?) that specializes in turning the way-back clock to the paisley summer of ’67. They sound like The Beatles during their Sgt. Pepper / Magical Mystery Tour period, along with Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, as filtered through XTC, especially in their Dukes of Stratosphear psychedelic guise. As a matter of fact, if you loved those two mid-‘80s Dukes platters (25 O’Clock and Psonic Psunspot), then you will flip your paisley wigs over this blotter of Owsley-drenched sunshine. Just like on those two albums, you get to have fun playing spot-the-‘60s-influence.
                             

Fans of the Virgineers continue to clamor for more info about the secretive pair, and many find it hard to believe they haven't yet broken through the misty ether that surrounds them and confounds those who would want to know more. Though Ken Zawacki (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion) and Bruce Lash

(vocals, bass, guitars, keyboards, percussion) claim on their website that the Virgineers "formed when the lads met at an art school for wayward girls in their hometown of Sydville, an Antarctic seaport built on the baby octopus trade," they are actually a dynamic duo originally hailing from Chicago. Many of the songs reveal the more whimsical, English tea-garden variety of psychedelia, which bands like The Hollies and Village Green-era Kinks specialized in. The period production techniques are spot-on, and they have quite a flair for memorable melodies.
                     

                       
This band has remained a mystery to many.  This album came out more than a decade ago, though, and

apparently is almost impossible to find these days. According to their website, where you can still purchase it as a download, they have also released a handful of singles since then, including one that just came out back in February, “Valentine,” which still carries on the ’60s vibe. If and when they are ever going to release a follow-up to this album, though, I haven’t a clue.

Psychic Lemon: Psychic Lemon 2016 + Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay 2018

             

 

Psychic Lemon describe their sound as a blend of space rock, krautrock and psych. The band used to

record in a studio in the back of a small garden in Cambridge, but got evicted and now lead a nomadic existence. The band's influences are broad, but choice artists include Hawkwind, Goat and Amon Düül II. They have released albums on Drone Rock Records (UK) and Tonzonen Records (DE), and have been featured on the compilation The Reverb Conspiracy Volume Six by Fuzz Club (UK). 
                  

PSYCHIC LEMON started as a four-piece progressive rock band, comprised of Andrew Briston

(guitar, keyboard), Andrew Hibberd (bass), George Horler (guitar) and Martin Law (percussion). Focussed on a blend of space and kraut rock they played their first rehearsal together in early 2014, everyone looking for a new musical challenge.
                 

The member's goal is to entertain, without compromise. The band's influences are broad, favourites

include Goat, Syd Barrett, The Heads and Amon Düül II. Their self-titled debut album was released in March 2016. Horler left the band soon after and the next album 'Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay' followed early 2018 via German Tonzonen Records label.

This is killer. Droney space rock is everywhere these days (even while it's not particularly popular, at least in a mainstream sense) which I think makes us value things like this less than we should. But this is one of the finest exemplars of this kind of music. drones are a road to the experience of divinity.

Los Acidos: Los Acidos 2016

 

Los Acidos are a psychedelic rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their album is super intoxicating piece of psychedelic music. Los Acidos are currently formed by Miguel Piermarini on vocals, guitar and occasionally harp, Sebastian Gentile on synthesizers, keyboards and choirs,

Santiago Rodriguez on bass and Matías Rivara on drums and percussion. The band started in 2010 and has gone through a lot of different formations, but Miguel and Sebastián were always part of the band. We had a couple of bassist and drummers. From 2011 to 2013 we were inactive, but from 2014 to 2016 with the recording of our first album, we were in the the band’s first stable line-up. We decided to maintain fluency at gigs that way. Then the bassist that plays on our LP left and we started to play with Santiago, and a year after that the drummer also left and we started to play with Matías. They make a great couple and we have a lot of fun… so hopefully this lineup will stay for a long time.
                           

Talk about the perfect color scheme within the album art to lure us in. This album cover alone deserves a purchase on vinyl with a conversion to framed art. Kudos to artist Lex Percepied. Well not only is the color scheme appealing to the eye, but the 10 track full length debut by Los Acidos is quite soothing to

the ear. Hailing from Argentina, Los Acidos show tremendous maturity in their love for psychedelic garage rock. The band infuses quite a diverse sound with the infusion of great guitar work, impressive keyboards, and periodic harmonica/brass along with other psychedelic effects. The vocals are not overwhelming and contain just the right amount of echo. The 10 tracks weave together to provide the listener with a unique euphoric trippy endeavor. Los Acidos blend influences from the 60s and current age rock influences that blend a perfect texture.
                                     

Influenced by Pink Floyd, Hawkwind y The Rolling Stones. Released a Debut Album (2016) which

had a good reception and positive reviews in specialized musical media, considered as One of the Best Argentine Works of the year and poiting the band as a referent of Latin American Psychedelic Rock.

Andwellas Dream: Love And Poetry 1969 + Andwella: World's End 1970 + People's People 1970

 

Andwella were an Irish psychedelic rock band formed in 1968, originally as The Method and later renamed Andwella's Dream. The trio were fronted by Dave Lewis (guitar/keyboard/vocals), with Nigel

Smith (bass/vocals) and Gordon Barton (drums). Andwellas Dream began in the late '60s as a heavy psychedelic trio, tapping into the multicolored imagery and fuzzy guitars of the era while remaining grounded by bandleader David Lewis' solid songwriting. After releasing 1969's Love & Poetry, Andwellas Dream shortened their name to Andwella, and released two more albums before breaking up in 1972. 
                            

Their first album, as Andwella's Dream, Love and Poetry, was recorded in London in 1968, and

released in August 1969. It featured jazz musician Bob Downes on saxophone and flute, and Wilgar Campbell on drums on the track "Felix". The album failed to sell, and Lewis then recorded a solo album, privately pressed, on the Ax label in 1970; which included new versions of some of the Andwella's Dream songs. In 1970 David Lewis wrote the music for and produced poet David Baxter's Goodbye Dave album, for which he was backed by Andwella.
                     

With the addition of Dave McDougall on guitar and vocals, the band was renamed Andwella. This line-up issued World's End in August 1970, before Dave Struthers replaced Nigel Smith on bass and

Jack McCulloch joined as drummer. This iteration of Andwella recorded their third album, 1971's People's People, which brought into greater focus some of the country and folk-rock tendencies that appeared in latent form on earlier material. Shortly after the album's release, Andwella broke up. While relatively obscure during their time, the band became highly regarded by psychedelia collectors and historians in years to follow.

what angle they were taking. On Love & Poetry, you get sustained guitar that walks the line between freakbeat and heaviness, some swirling organ and husky vocals that betray the influence of Traffic and Procol Harum, pastoral acoustic folky tunes in the Donovan style, airy-fairy dabs of phased guitars and storybook lyrics, etc.

In 1970, Andwella dropped the dream and woke up to a new morning sound that traded flutes for trumpets

and shredding guitars for pounding pianos. With a little help from Bobby Scott, David Lewis proved once again his mastery over the craft of songwriting with “The Weight” style epics “Back on The Road,” proto arena-rock power ballads like “Just How Long,” and portraits of tenderness in the epic love song on “Lady Love.” Highly recommended.

People’s People finds David Lewis and his band of freewheelers stripping their sound down to the

essentials. Emerging from the psychedelic haze, the trio find themselves at a crossroads of American southern rock and a pastoral English countryside and deliver an album with booming harmonies and transcendental hooks that could go head-to-head with The Band or The Allman Brothers. The final chapter in the Andwella story has all the makings of a classic LP, and if not for the Reflection label’s own chaotic dissolution around the time of the release, it probably would have been.
