Marsheaux: 2004 - 2015

 

Marsheaux is a Greek synthpop duo formed in Athens in 2003. The group is composed of vocalists,

songwriters and keyboardists Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou. The name Marsheaux is derived from the first syllable of each band member's name. Both members sing almost exclusively in English. Andy McCluskey of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) said about this band: "I do have a soft spot for Marsheaux I have to say. They have a certain sort of wispy, melancholic charm". 
                      

Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou were born in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 2000, they

moved to Athens and founded Marsheaux in 2003 to further their appreciation of electronic pop music. Marsheaux came to national prominence in Greece with their debut single, a cover of Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn". The single received extensive airplay in Greece and mainland Europe. They continued to gain international recognition for their remixes of "Will I Ever" by In Vox featuring Andy Bell of Erasure. 
                                      

Now signed to Undo Records, Marsheaux released their debut album E-Bay Queen in June 2004.

The album played heavily on Marsheaux's stated influences, which include OMD, the Pet Shop Boys, Sparks, John Foxx and Depeche Mode. E-Bay Queen was critically well received internationally. In December 2006, Undo Records released Sophie and Marianthi's follow up album Peekaboo. The single "Hanging On" was released in 2007.
                                  

In July 2009, the band released their third album, Lumineux Noir, at Undo Records/Out of Line. It

is reminiscent of 1980s synthpop with tracks that have been compared to Ladytron, The Chemical Brothers and Client. Two singles supported the album: "Breakthrough" and "Summer". In May 2011, Marsheaux released a new song, "Can You Stop Me?". In May 2012, the band issued the compilation of mostly unreleased material and rare songs, E-Bay Queen is Dead. 
                           

A fourth album, Inhale, followed in 2013, along with a compilation drawn from all four studio

albums, Odyssey. In 2015, Marsheaux released their fifth studio album A Broken Frame, a cover album of Depeche Mode's 1982 LP of the same name.  In May 2016, Marsheaux released a new single "Safe Tonight", that includes original and extended versions of the song and remixes by Nikonn and Fotonovela. This single is from their sixth studio album Ath.Lon, released on 16 June 2016.

Public Image Ltd (abbreviated and stylised as PiL) are an English post-punk band formed by lead

vocalist John Lydon (previously, as Johnny Rotten, lead vocalist of the Sex Pistols), guitarist Keith Levene (a founding member of the Clash), bassist Jah Wobble, and drummer Jim Walker in June 1978. The group's line-up has changed frequently over the years; Lydon has been the sole constant member.
                       

Formed by John Lydon in the wake of the collapse of the Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd. is a shape-

shifting musical project in which the bilious singer and lyricist explored his ideas without compromise. Depending on what period of the band's career you choose, Public Image Ltd. (officially abbreviated PiL) could sound like bass-heavy post-punk thunder (1978's Public Image: First Issue), an inspired fusion of Krautrock and dub (1979's Metal Box), muscular and expertly executed alternative rock (1986's Album), or polished but angular dance-friendly pop (1989's 9), with many other stops along the way. 
                            

Despite a constantly shifting lineup and musical approach, Lydon's bitter howl -- full of anger, pain, and sometimes sardonic wit -- gave PiL's many guises a musical and thematic through line, and at their best,

his collaborators created music as powerful and absorbing as Lydon's intense charisma. Lydon revived PiL for live work in 2009, and the reunion albums This Is PiL (2012), What the World Needs Now (2015), and End of World (2023) featured some of his strongest work since the '80s. In 2023, PiL released the unexpectedly tender song "Hawaii," a love song Lydon wrote for his wife, Nora Foster, who died after a long illness in April 2023.

01. PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED - FIRST ISSUE 1978

                        

Like it or not, Public Image Limited's First Issue (aka Public Image) was an album that helped set the pace for what eventually became known as post-punk. In England a vacuum had opened up in the wake of the breakup of the Sex Pistols in January 1978, and many punk fans and rival groups were

impatient to see what ex-Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon aka "Johnny Rotten" was going to roll out next. Disheartened owing to events in his legal proceedings against the Sex Pistols management company Glitterbest, and disgusted by the punk scene in general, Lydon was determined to create something that was neither punk nor even really rock as it was known in 1978. Working with ex-Clash guitarist Keith Levene, first-time bassist Jah Wobble, and Canadian drummer Jim Walker, Public Image Limited produced an album that represented the punk sound after it had shot itself in the head and became another entity entirely.

PIL managed to avoid boundaries for the first four years of their existence, and Metal Box is undoubtedly

the apex. It's a hallmark of uncompromising, challenging post-punk, hardly sounding like anything of the past, present, or future. Sure, there were touchstones that got their imaginations running -- the bizarreness of Captain Beefheart, the open and rhythmic spaces of Can, and the dense pulses of Lee Perry's productions fueled their creative fires -- but what they achieved with their second record is a completely unique hour of avant-garde noise.  It's alien dance music.

Metal Box is the second studio album by Public Image Ltd, released by Virgin Records on 23 November 1979. The album takes its name from the round metal canister which contained the initial pressings of the record. It was later reissued in standard LP packaging as Second Edition in February 1980 by Virgin Records in the United Kingdom, and by Warner Bros. Records and Island Records in the United States.

03. PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED - THE FLOWERS OF ROMANCE 1981

                       

As opposed to the axis of throbbing bass and guitar slashings of Metal Box, The Flowers of Romance is

centralized on razor-sharp drums and typically haranguing vocals. No dubwise grooves here -- bassist Jah Wobble was kicked out prior to the recording for ripping off PiL backing tracks for his solo material. And growing more disenchanted with the guitar, Keith Levene's infatuation with synthesizers was reaching a boiling point. His scythe-like guitar is truly brought out for only one song. Stark and minimal are taken to daring lengths, so it's no surprise that Virgin initially balked at issuing the heavily percussive record.

The Greatest Hits, So Far mines the singles PiL released through 1990. Ten years after its release, it was

doubtful that a second volume would surface (the '90s saw one lone studio release, not to mention a John Lydon "solo" record), so thankfully Lydon didn't embarrass himself by titling it "The Greatest Hits, Volume One." That said, not many outfits under the guise of one name can boast a collection of singles so diverse and ranging in quality.

Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls: Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls 1980

 

The Invisible Girls were a British rock band formed in Salford, Greater Manchester in 1978 to provide a musical backdrop to the recorded output of Salford punk poet John Cooper Clarke. The

band's nucleus was Joy Division and New Order producer Martin Hannett and keyboardist Steve Hopkins, with contributions from Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks and Bill Nelson of Be-Bop Deluxe, amongst others. The band played on the first solo album by Pauline Murray (lead singer of Penetration), the eponymous Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls and some singles, and later with Nico for her 1982 single "Procession".
                         

The Invisible Girls was a band formed in Salford, Greater Manchester, in 1978, to provide backing music

for punk poet John Cooper Clarke. It initially featured Factory Records producer Martin Hannett on bass guitar, Steve Hopkins on keyboards, 10cc drummer Paul Burgess, and guitarist Lyn Oakey. This line-up played on Cooper Clarke's debut album Où est la maison de fromage?, before they named themselves the Invisible Girls.  

PAULINE MURRAY AND THE INVISIBLE GIRLS 1980

Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls is the debut album by post/punk icon Pauline Murray, co-produced by revered sonic architect Martin 'Zero' Hannett in 1980. Recorded at the famous

Strawberry Studios, the album offered 11 slices of modern electronic pop written by Pauline and partner Robert Blamire and marked a radical departure from their shared past in pioneering punk band Penetration. As well producer/arrangers Martin Hannett and Steve Hopkins (aka the Invisible Girls), the album features a stellar cast of guest musicians including John Maher (Buzzcocks) and Vini Reilly (Durutti Column). Indeed Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls presents almost as a Factory record, exquisitely sleeved by Peter Saville and Trevor Key.
                           

Stand-out tracks include singles Dream Sequence and Mr X, with the newly remastered album now

augmented by bonus material including non-album singles and a John Peel session from March 1980.
"It's a bit of a missing link album," says Pauline today. "Written and recorded after punk, but before Martin Rushent and the Human League made airy pop respectable again. We chose the other Martin in 1980 because we wanted the incredible sounds he achieved for Joy Division and Magazine. Thundertunes, basically."
                               

"Accustomed as we've become to instant availability, the notion of the 'lost classic' has long since tipped over the precipice. Odd then that this recording - bar a limited 90s re-press - has remained

doggedly unavailable. Taking stock of punk's dissipation and their own band's unravelling as the 1980s dawned, Penetration's Pauline Murray and Robert Blamire embarked on a musical tangent, with Martin Hannett and a distinguished cast on board to craft a one-off album of darkly sophisticated pop tunes. Transplanting Penetration's twin guitar assault with Vini Reilly's dextrous fretwork, the cascading keyboards of Steve Hopkins, and, no least, Hannett's textural flourishes, Murray and Blamire were uniquely enabled to make an astonishing quantum leap from their past. 
                             

Songs of emotional unease unfurl, striated with glimmers of fragile optimism, through the eerie opening

notes of Screaming in the Darkness, the otherworldly pop of Dream Sequence and Thundertunes, and the claustrophobic soundscape of closer Judgement Day. Slipping through the cracks, both in terms of commercial success and Sister Lovers-level retrospective cult adulation, I'd argue this album is richly deserving of both.
