Psychedelic States is a series of 1960s psychedelic rock and garage rock compilation albums, each focusing on artists from specific states. They were released by Gear Fab Records. Several states had more than one volume representing them.
6. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: NEW YORK IN THE 60s VOL.1 (2002)
It is generally not a difficult task to pick out '60s New York pop and rock. The music tends to have a number of identifying characteristics that render it readily identifiable, usually only a few bars into any
given song. Such characteristics include the pugnacious, streetwise vocals, dense fuzz guitar with a certain ruggedness that predicted heavy metal a couple years ahead of the curve, a massively lumbering bottom end with a repetitive thump, a significant strain of R&B, and -- most particularly -- an immediately distinguishable organ sound unique from other organ-heavy regions like Seattle and Boston. All of those attributes, if they can be called such, are in abundance on Gear Fab's first Psychedelic States compilation, which chronicles New York's garage and psychedelic scene. Alongside them you can find the typical teenage romantic angst, snarling insolence, guitar rave-ups, and the Beatles and Stones imitations included in all such collections. The winners here include "Can't Get You Out of
My Heart" from the Rustics (band of the teenaged Faine Jade), the brilliantly dismissive, downright vulgar "Superhog" from the Jelly Bean Bandits (a combo well known to most garage aficionados), the Descendants' Diddley-esque "Lela," the Age of Reason's tough "Dirty Shame," and "All My Life" by the Taboos (the only true bit of acid dementia present here). If you like the other albums in this Gear Fab series, this one will not disappoint.

Featuring all sorts of bizarre and unique music from the decade of bizarre and unique entertainment,
Psychedelic States: New York in the 60's, Vol. 2 follows the genre as it affected the Empire State. Although the first volume in the series featured a large set of obscure music from the period, this one is even bigger, with 29 tracks, lots of photos, and several interesting stories told by the bands themselves. To any fan of obscure garage rock or psychedelia from the era, this is a prime collection to pick up.

8. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: ALABAMA IN THE 60s VOL.2 (2002)
The second Alabama installment in Gear Fab's fab Psychedelic States series is more of the same, meaning a mixed bag of Clearasil psychedelia and undersexed garage rock, but it skews enticingly
more towards the former sort of weirdness this time around than did the original volume. The compilation still has the good (but not psychedelic) regional hits mixed in with the fourth-rate, mainstream-aping pap (unappetizing even as guilty nostalgic pleasures) and more than its fair share of decent but not-nearly-as-groovy-as-they-thought filler, which is at least of a quality to elicit a giggle or smile the first two or three times through (though that is perhaps one or two more spins than the stuff merits).
On the other hand, the relatively significant number of oddball, shaggy-dog nuggets makes the collection worth sifting through, starting right out the box with the Chimes' "#38" and its effects pedal-heavy acid blues. The Distortions do a far-out, yowling (literally) version of the Howlin' Wolf classic
"Smokestack Lightning" with some excellent slide guitar work, good enough to get them signed to Mercury. The deliciously named the Outer Mongolian Herd crank out a "Hey Joe" halfway between the Love version of the song and the unhinged nuttiness of "Wooly Bully." And the infectious, harmony-laden "You're Playing With Fire" finds the Male in full-tilt boogie. But perhaps the strangest curiosity, for extra-musical reasons: "Think!!," a 1968 cut by George Wallace Jr. Yes, the son of the infamous governor. And, yeah, it's pretty solid.

9. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: TEXAS IN THE 60s VOL.1 (2003)
This first Texas edition in Gear Fab's ongoing Psychedelic States series scales back on the number of
THE BUBBLE PUPPY |
songs (just 18 this time around) and also, for the first time since the initial volume in the series, includes a number of recordings from relatively well-known artists (Roy Head, with an awesome, if uncharacteristic, rave-up) and bands (Bubble Puppy, which had a 1969 Top Ten hit with "Hot Smoke and Sassafras") that have previously been compiled on past LPs. The album benefits from both circumstances.

10. VARIOUS - PSYCHEDELIC STATES: ILLINOIS IN THE 60s VOL.1 (2004)
Gear Fab Records has continued to unearth some of the most obscure '60s psychedelic sides for their
massive undertaking of issuing these records region by region, in this case, Illinois. It's a remarkable task, especially since so many relics from the psychedelic era have already been mined for the immensely popular Nuggets box sets, the Pebbles collections, and myriad other small-label collections, but even more of a feat is that the Psychedelic States: Illinois in the '60s, Vol. 1 collection is a truly enjoyable set of quality songs, not just the bottom of the barrel. Based on Gear Fab releasing three
volumes of psych from Florida and two each from New York and Alabama, as well as sets from Texas and Georgia, it is clear that the label takes this massive undertaking very seriously, and with "Vol. 1" tagged onto this set, the implication that more will soon be available is not only astonishing but a call for celebration.
