Glam Rock Explosion! (4 Great Compilations) 7 CD - PART 2

VARIOUS:  ALL THE YOUNG DROOGS  60 JUVENILE DELINQUENT WRECKS 2019

Glam rock (also known as glitter rock) is a subgenre of rock music that developed in the United

Kingdom in the early 1970s and was primarily defined by the hairstyles, makeup, and flamboyant clothing of its musicians, particularly platform shoes and glitter.
Glam artists drew on diverse sources, ranging from bubblegum pop and 1950s rock and roll to cabaret, science fiction, and complex art rock. The flamboyant clothing and visual styles of performers were often camp or androgynous and have been described as playing with other gender roles.

The UK charts were inundated with glam rock acts from 1971 to 1975. The March 1971 appearance of T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops—performing "Hot Love"—wearing glitter and satins, is often cited as the beginning of the movement. Other British

glam rock artists included David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Sweet, Slade, Mud, Roxy Music, Alvin Stardust, Wizzard and Gary Glitter. In the United States, the scene was much less prevalent, but US artists such as New York Dolls, Sparks, Suzi Quatro, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed and Jobriath achieved success in the UK and/or US.
Glam rock declined after the mid-1970s, but influenced other musical genres including punk rock, post-punk, gothic rock and glam metal. The new romantic movement, which began as an underground fashion subculture movement in nightclubs in the late 1970s before becoming mainstream in the early 1980s, was also inspired by the visuals of the glam rock era.

Beyond Bowie and T. Rex, past chart-toppers like Mud and the Sweet, even buried below bands like

Kenny and Hello, there was a bubbling underground of goofy, glammy, and hooky rock & roll being played by bands in the U.K. during the '70s. Most of them were forgotten if they were ever known in the first place, lost to junk shops, bargain bins, and boot sales.

The music was too good to be left in the dustbin forever, though, and early-2000s compilations like

Velvet Tinmine, Glitterbest, and Boobs finally gave bands like the Jook, Crushed Butler, and the Plod their moment to shine.
After that little blast of activity, the reissues dried up until the arrival of 2019's excellent All the Young Droogs: 60 Juvenile Delinquent Wrecks, Rock 'N' Glam (And a Flavour of Bubblegum) from the 70's.

It's easily the equal of the earlier sets, sharing some bands and artists but digging up loads of dusty

gems, too.
The compilers (Phil King and Mark Stratford) split the three discs into separate themes, each of which was a main tributary to the glitter glam flood that filled the underground between 1971 and 1976.

ROCK OFF!

Rock Off! delves into the side of glam that was more likely to be denim clad than sporting a feather

RAY  OWEN'S  MOON

boa. It's made up of beery boogie rockers, blasts of proto-punk, some concrete heavy slabs of hard rock, and a bit of energetic pub rock.

Iggy & the Stooges make an appearance with their wiry "I Got a Right," but most of the bands aren't that
IGGY  &  THE  STOOGES

wild or wooly. Or dangerous. Mostly they come across like goof-offs and wannabe tough guys, and that makes for way more fun.

Tracks like the Brats' "Be a Man," Milk 'N' Cookies' "Wok 'N' Roll" or Slowload's really dumb "Big
THIRD  WORLD  WAR  II

Boobs Boogie" are not the work of serious musicians; nobody here comes close to saying anything profound or important, nobody is super skilled at their instrument, and most of the singers are still looking for the right pitch. If that sounds like a bad thing, perhaps look elsewhere for musical kicks.

TUBTHUMPERS AND HELLRAISERS

Tubthumpers and Hellraisers collects fun and frolicsome rockers that were delivered with a wink

MOTT THE  HOOPLE

and a smile. Many of the bands are influenced by the Sweet and like them combine the same whomping hard rock attack with a sticky-sweet (and slightly silly) bubblegum feel to come up with danceable, singalong-ready tunes.

Hector's "Bye Bye Bad Days" sounds like kiddie Sweet, Hot Rod's "I Want You (All Night Long)" adds
HECTOR

some yearning bubble-soul to the mix, the One Hit Wonders' "Hey Hey Jump Now" is a ridiculous cheer rocker, and the Jets' "Yeah!" is a synthy stomper. The quotient of hits to misses is very high and it says something that the biggest name here -- Mott the Hoople -- delivers only about the tenth best song.

ELEGANCE & DECADENCE

Elegance & Decadence  focuses more on the space ballads, off-kilter cabaret explorations, and

BE  BOP  DELUXE

sophisticated anti-pop that trailed in the wake of Bowie and Roxy Music. Most of the songs here are seriously weird and made by artists reaching for some kind of sophistication and drama they can't quite reach.

The difference between reach and grasp makes for fascinating listening. A track like Paul St John's
ALASTAIR  RIDDELL

"Starship Lover" is such a goofy take on Bowie's extraterrestrial sound that it shouldn't work at all, but the quirks make it brilliant.

Pick anyone from the track list and it'll be much the same. Brett Smiley's fragile music hall ditty
DOCTORS  OF  MADNESS

"Abstracting Billy" or James Arthur Edwards' overblown '50s ballad "Pastiche Blue" or Brian Wells' super-dorky "Paper Party" are all too precious and silly by half, but they are works of oddball genius instead.

By the time the disc finishes spinning, it's impossible not to be convinced that this is the best, most insane
METRO

collection of glitter and glam ever committed to disc. When you add it to the other two discs in the set, it helps make All the Young Droogs an invaluable resource for aficionados of this very weird, very exciting period of music.

The set is certainly the equal of the essential junk shop glam collections that have come before it, and the
ROCOCO

care and thought put into it might even make it better. Either way, fans of the sound and era should be glad that this sound is being dug up again.

Glam Rock Explosion! (4 Great Compilations) 7 CD - PART 1

VARIOUS: THE BEST GLAM ROCK ALBUM IN THE WORLD... EVER! 1988

This compilation, another in Virgin Records' lengthy line of double-CD "Best Ever" compilations, tackles

ALICE  COOPER
the world of glam rock. It's expansive length allows The Best Glam Rock Album in the World Ever to show off the impressive versatility of the artists who worked under the glam rock banner:

From the pure pop of Sweet and Mud to the edgy and intellectual stylistic excursions of Mott the Hoople
SWEET

and Roxy Music, this compilation shows off an impressive range of artistry that existed in this genre.

It also includes some impressive rarities that attract the genre's hardcore fans: "Seven Deadly Finns" is a
BRIAN  ENO

non-album Brian Eno single that finds that arty iconoclast in an unusually pop-minded mood, and Chris Spedding's "Motor Bikin'" is a delightful glam rock tune built on roaring, motorcycle-style guitar riffs.

However, The Best Glam Rock Album in the World Ever suffers from the kind of basic selection problems
DAVID  BOWIE

that hinder many compilations. The first problem is the occasional questionable choice of artist: Golden Earring's "Radar Love" may have the kind of tribal drum break that popped up in many glam rock classics, but it is really a prog-rock trac,k and the Faces' "Stay With Me" rocks as hard as a glam classic, but it is too straightforward a rock & roll song to fit under the genre's banner.

Also, the compilers sometimes make the wrong choice for the right artist: Bryan Ferry was a leading light
SLADE

for the artsy side of glam, but the R&B-styled ""Let's Stick Together"" is one of his least glam-oriented tracks, and "Perfect Day" is a great Lou Reed ballad, but "Walk on the Wild Side" had a stronger glam feel and a greater influence on the glam rock scene.

Finally, there are a few big oversights: the biggest and most notable is the total absence of tracks by Gary
T.  REX

Glitter,
who scored one of the definitive glam hits with "Rock and Roll, Part 2." Despite these problems, The Best Glam Rock Album in the World Ever remains an entertaining and solid compilation of glam rock tracks with enough rarities to entice the hardcore enthusiast.

It may not succeed as a definitive collection, but it makes a good introduction to the charm and surprising
ROXY MUSIC

stylistic versatility of glam rock.

VARIOUS: VELVET TINMINE  (20 JUNK SHOP GLAM ROCK RAVERS) 2003

UK glam rock in its early to mid 1970s heyday was so hugely popular and influential when it came to its

ARROWS
flagship artists and acts, becoming a beloved touchstone for decades at home and beyond, that it took 2003’s Velvet Tinmine, rereleased with a slightly different tracklist in 2009, to demonstrate, Nuggets-style, that there were also a fair amount of interesting never-quite-wases as well.

Compiled and annotated by a troika of musician/writer obsessives, Philip King, Bob Stanley and Mark
BEARDED  LADY

Stafford, Velvet Tinmine brought the concept of ‘junkshop glam’ into the discourse, the album’s title a funnily appropriate riff on both the David Bowie song “Velvet Goldmine” and the Todd Haynes glam fantasia that followed some decades later.

HELLO

In either edition it kicks off with a real monster: the aggro-Sweet, finger-snapping and heavy-stomping “Rebels Rule” by the brilliantly named Iron Virgin.

After that it’s a happy slumgullion of plenty of familiar elements that all do seem like they should have
IRON  VIRGIN

been hits, however secondhand: shriekalong lyrics, blaring synths alongside the drums and retro-50s moves, and big-sounding production even if on often smaller budgets.

The excellent liner notes talk about a slew of names that would gain more attention later, like producer
THE  PLOD

Martin Rushent and cult musicians like Martin Newell and Simon Fisher Turner, as well as honestly tragically-fated figures like the Bowie disciple Brett Smiley.

VARIOUS: GLITTERBEST (20 PRE PUNK 'N' GLAM TERRACE STOMPERS 2004

There isn't a single redeeming quality to Glitterbest: 20 Pre Punk 'n' Glam Terrace Stompers.

CRUSHED  BUTLER

Nothing but good old dumb fun.
From the mindless cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" by the Hammersmith Gorillas that kicks things off with a resounding thud all the way to the end of the disc, it is nothing but loud guitars, shouted vocals, stomping beats, and ridiculous lyrics.

It covers the years 1971-1976, and if you recognize any of the bands here you were probably a
HOLLYWOOD  BRATS

member. Lost gems?
There are a few: the tough power pop of the Jook's "Aggravation Place," the '50s-inspired outer-space boogie of Flintlock's "Sooner or Later," the tough Modern Lovers in a wind tunnel sound of Despair's "Sweet Sweet Heart," Streak's "Bang Bang Bullet" (which apes the New York Dolls right down to Johnny Thunders' trademark guitar swoops), and the primitive thunk of Crushed Butler's very very stupid "High School Dropout."

(Is Crushed Butler the greatest name for a band ever? Maybe.) Best of all is the extremely nasty "Sick on
JET

You" by the Hollywood Brats, which includes tender lyrics like "I'm sick to death of everything you do/And if I'm gonna puke/Oh babe I'm gonna puke on you." Otherwise, the disc serves up a wide range of forgotten music that never made a dent in any chart but sounds damn fine in 2004.

You get glitter with Bowie as alien vocals on Jet's "Nothing to Do With Us," weird Roxy Music by way of
STREAK

Taco cabaret glam from Tiger Lily on "Ain't Misbehavin'," an early primitive version of "City of Fun" by England's Glory (later the Only Ones), hyped-up pub rock from Ducks Deluxe on the rockin' "Coast to Coast," and wonderfully silly stuff like American Jam Band's "Jam Jam" and Spunky Spider's "You Won't Come."

You won't find any of this stuff in the history books and no one would ever call any of these bands
THE  HAMMERSMITH  GORILLAS

innovators or visionaries. So what.
Crank it up next time you want to bug your neighbors, blast it out of your car speakers, embrace it as the offspring of the ridiculous novelty singles of the '50s that you always turn up when they get played by accident on oldies radio. Have fun! That is what rock & roll is truly about and Glitterbest is 100 percent rock & roll.
