Various: Brown Acid - (Heavy Rock From The American Comedown Era) Part 3 (TRIP: 11-12-13-14-15)

Brown Acid gives these long-lost gems their well deserved moment to shine. Legendary compilations like Nuggets and Pebbles have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth

of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on Brown Acid. Starting in 2015, Barresi, along with Daniel Hall’s RidingEasy Records, began pulling together five collections of rare and weird tracks from rock’s past. The music all comes under Barresi’s umbrella term “Brown Acid”, with the tracks loosely fitting into three sub-genres: hard rock, heavy psych and proto-metal. They’re labels that have confused the snobbiest of musos.RidingEasy Records set out to put out bands who needed records pressed on music fan’s shelves. It launched in 2013 and has a pretty even split of new bands and reissues resurrecting albums from the dead.

11.  BROWN ACID - THE ELEVENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2020

We’re now in the double digits of brilliant long-lost, rare, and unreleased hard rock, heavy psych, and

proto-metal tracks from the 60s-70s and clearly this has become a bonafide archaeological movement as each new edition leads us to more exciting new discoveries. Like we’ve done throughout this series, all of these tracks were painstakingly licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. Make yourself comfortable and prepare for yet another deep, deep dive into the treasure trove of dank, subterranean, wild-eyed and hairy rock ’n’ roll.

12.  BROWN ACID - THE TWELFTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2021

Well, who’d have thought it? Here’s the twelfth instalment of the Brown Acid series from RidingEasy Records, their ongoing exploration of rare, lost and forgotten treasures from the late 60’s and early70’s. These proto-metal, hard rock and heavy psych riches are continuing to turn up, thankfully curated and

shared with a new, wider audience. They still haven’t run out of steam, which is very good news. Whether they’re discovering hidden gems in dusty tombs, or exhuming abandoned corpses and bringing them back to life – pick your metaphor: the RidingEasy Forensics Department have managed to surprise yet again. Their quest seems never rending, but we can be thankful that these dedicated scholars continue to discover hitherto abandoned sonic delights. It’s harder to pick out gems which shine brighter than the others this time around, but “Brown Acid: the Twelfth Trip” manages to reach a high standard across the board. Very enjoyable, and recommended listening for when Jimi and Janis pop round for some mushroom tea.

13.  BROWN ACID - THE THIRTEENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2021

None other thanMonster Magnet’s Dave Wyndorf has described this era in rock and roll as a sort of

Twilight Zone for music. A post-hippie, post flower-power, pre-punk, pre-metal era of burgeoning FM radio, and ‘album-oriented’ rock.  Bands high on the fumes of Hendrix, Cream, and Blue Cheer, but also inhaling from the same smoke, and running parallel with Sabbath and Zeppelin, plugged in, turned up, and dropped out. However, a lot of these artists were lost to history, with maybe a only single recorded to document their creations.

14.  BROWN ACID - THE FOURTEENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2022

It’s that time of the year again. Every stoner & weedian’s favorite holiday. 4/20. This also means another installment of RidingEasy Records and Permanent Records, at-this-point, fabled Brown Acidseries. Hard to believe this is now The Fourteenth Trip, but that’s how time seems to be moving these days. Brown

Acidhas gone on to join other legendary singles compilations like the Nuggets comp for garage rock/psychedelic stuff, or the Back From The Gravegarage punk series as must-haves for music nerds, and audiophiles. The series history has been well-covered, including here at The Sleeping Shaman as recently as RidingEasy’s other favorite holiday: Halloween, but the Cliff Notes version is Lance Barresi co-owner of LA’s Permanent Records, and RidingEasy Records Daniel Hall, have joined forces with the mission of digging up as much of the weird, out-of-print, long-lost, Twilight Zone era of rock & roll as they can mine. The post-hippy, pre-punk, proto-metal, garage rock, heavy psych, bombed-out era that existed between 1968-1976.

15.  BROWN ACID - THE  TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2020

For the newcomer though, the cliff notes version is Lance Barresi, co-owner of LA’s Permanent Records, and RidingEasy Records Daniel Hall, have joined together on an expedition of digging up as much out-of-print, long lost, acid rock, garage rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal singles form the ‘comedown era’

between 1968-1975 as they can unearth. Most of the artists featured in the Brown Acidseries never released full-lengths, the only documentation of their existence being a 45, perhaps self-financed, sent to local radio stations, and/or labels in the hopes of landing a record deal, but often instead being lost to the annals of time. The Fifteenth Trip, like all the previous fourteen trips, serves up another killer batch of good-to-great rock from the comedown era. There’s a lot of fire right off the bat, as opener Take The Time by The Looking Glassfeatures a menacing, walking, garage rock riff, before unfolding into a frantic, ass-shaking ripper, while second track 444 by The Zoo is a blown-out, distorted boogie-rock good time.

Various: Brown Acid - (Heavy Rock From The American Comedown Era) Part 2 ( Vol. 6-7-8-9-10)

If you are a fan of Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Sir Lord Baltimore and the like, this series is for you. Just

as the Nuggets and Pebbles series have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, Brown Acid collects the wealth of hard and heavy Acid Psych, Proto-Metal and early Stoner Rock. Mixing and mastering is top notch. Riding Easy has taken great strides in locating original master recordings or mixes and making every attempt to compensate the artists they feature. Started in 2015.

“So rare that diehard fuzz junkies say you’d have a better chance of winning the lottery than finding a

physical 45 rpm single by one of the bands featured on their latest installment.” — Dangerous Minds
“Will do for hard rock, proto-metal and heavy psych what Nuggets did for garage rock, and bring it to a wider audience of collectors and music fans.” — The Guardian
“We’re huge fans of the Brown Acid series… Think of it as a companion to the essential Nuggets compilation but covering artists and records that never made it out of their hometowns.” — Ultimate Classic Rock

06. BROWN ACID - THE SIXTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2018

If you’d told us when we started this epic journey that we’d have six volumes worth of licensed tracks released in just three years, we would’ve laughed in your face! Doing the Dark Lord’s work isn’t an easy job, but somebody’s gotta do it, so here we are with six Trips under our belt and more lined up. You heads

just can’t get enough obscure hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal from the late-60s & 70s! And for that, we’re grateful for the opportunity to keep laying these slabs in your lap.
This isn’t just a random mixtape we threw together off the Internet. We find the records, track the bands and transfer the tapes, so you don’t have to. The bands did their job back in the day by writing, recording and releasing this material, most times against all odds, and you’ve squandered your hard earned scratch on this record, so I guess the least we can do is continue to compile quality Rock’n’Roll cuts from the golden age of heaviness.

The forthcoming seventh edition of the popular compilation series featuring long-lost vintage 60s-70s

proto-metal and stoner rock singles, Brown Acid: The Seventh Trip is set for release on Halloween 2018. 08. BROWN ACID - THE EIGHTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 201
9

This Trip comes straight at ya with an all out attack, quite literally. The residents of St. Clair Shores should consider themselves lucky to have been so close to the greatness of Attack! “School Daze” kicks

out the jams Detroit-style, but has enough flair and style to have our main man Jimi rolling over in his grave. Another prime example of why Detroit is known as Rock City! Speaking of rock, White Rock will knock your stank-ass socks off with their 1972 burner “Please Don’t Run Away”. This 45 was privately released by this Houston-based band that reportedly played shows with Josefus, Stone Axe, and Purple Sun. And it was basically unknown until it surfaced at the Austin Record Convention in 2018! The fact that there are still completely unknown records out there to be discovered never ceases to amaze us.

09. BROWN ACID - THE NINTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2019

Number 9. Number 9? Number 9! Brown Acid is back, right on time, with a fresh batch of the dankest hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal bangers you’ve never heard before. As usual, all of these tracks

were licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. It ain’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do! And although the quantity keeps rising, our quality control hasn’t suffered. You won’t find even one throwaway track here, or on any volume, just pure unadulterated heaviness from the after-Altamont era. This Trip is All-American, and in addition to the eight 45 sourced jams and one hard rock holy grail LP track, it includes a previously unheard song by a completely unknown band that’ll melt your mind. So crack a cold one, crank the volume knob, and let the Brown Acid seep into your skull yet again.

10. BROWN ACID - THE TENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2020

Here we are, arriving at the tenth edition of Brown Acid in just half as many years! As always, we packed

in the highest highs of the dankest hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal tracks previously lost to the sands of time. As usual, all of these tracks were painstakingly licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. It’s hard to believe we’re already up to 10 volumes of this lysergic neanderthal wail, but the long-lost jams just keep-a-coming like Texas crude to fuel your rock’n’roll engine and melt your metal mind.

Various: Brown Acid (Heavy Rock From The American Comedown Era) Part 1 (1-2-3-4-5)

Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century — particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins – often hoarding them in private

collections, or selling at ridiculous collector’s prices. Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on the Brown Acid series. Lance Barresi, owner of L.A./Chicago retailer Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that’s hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.

01. BROWN ACID - THE FIRST TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2015

Brown Acid: The First Trip opens with the slithering buzzsaw guitars and hard-rock howl of Zeke’s’ “Box”, a monster that gives Blue Cheer a run for their leaden blues. Snow sways into “Sunflower” with

a touch of Steppenwolf’s swagger and wind-in-their-hair wildness. Elsewhere, Zebra proves they were “Wasted” with a soul-inflected groove, while Bob Goodsite leans in on his wah-wah and phaser pedals, determined to out-Hendrix Jimi himself on “Faze.” Raw Meat’s “Stand By Girl” serves up a fierce, stomping riff intercut with Iron Butterfly style operatics. Bacchus kicks out a hostile sounding boogie, demanding to “Carry My Load.” Josefus caps it all off nicely with a hooky power-pop meets Bob Seger System meets Lollipop Shoppe anthem with the undeniably catchy chorus, “hard luck — keep truckin’!”

02. BROWN ACID - THE SECOND TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2016

Brown Acid: The Second Trip opens with the squealing guitar harmonies and Sabbath plod of Ash‘s “Midnight Wish.” Sweet Crystal‘s “Warlords” is a fuzzy and fierce Deep Purple/Arthur Brown inspired organ-led anthem. Raving Maniac‘s ‘Rock and Roll Man” is a tight and brash glam-meets-metal tune

proving the true potential of a genre later squandered on Sunset Strip poodleheads. “Silence of the Morning” by Glass Sun serves grungy psych while the Volt Rush Band merges MC5 frantic energy with razor-sharp guitar leads. And, Iron Knowledge‘s aptly titled “Show Stopper” features a breakbeat and incredibly infectious detuned bass warble motif that DJs would kill for – had anyone been able to find the tune back in the day. Throughout, The Second Trip is yet another wall-to-wall set of blazing tracks that feels like you’ve uncovered a holy grail. And, in a way, you have.

03. BROWN ACID - THE THIRD TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2016

We continue down the wormhole of hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal here on The Third Trip with a set of tunes so obscure they can’t be seen without a third eye. Most of these tracks were recorded in shack-sized studios, privately pressed for promotional purposes, and tossed out like last night’s half

empties only to later be discovered to be half-full, if not overflowing with greatness. The majority of these tracks are from the good ol’ US of A with two exceptions, Ash-labelmate New Zealanders, Chook, and the mighty Limeys, Factory. We won’t take full credit for it, but we’re sorry to say that these types of 45s have skyrocketed in value over the last little while and some of the records included in this volume have only changed hands a handful of times on the collector market. Although it’s a bummer for the pocketbook, we say “Hell Yeah!” it’s about time these rarities have become recognized as the priceless artifacts that they are.

04. BROWN ACID - THE FOURTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2017

If you thought we were getting close to the end of the Brown Acid series with our last Trip, you were dead wrong…we’re only just getting rolling.  The well of privately released hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal 45s is deep and we are nowhere near tapped out.  Most of these records were barely

released and never properly distributed so they ain’t easy to find, but they’re out there if you’re willing to dig…and we aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty.  Hard calluses have formed from handling the shovel and we’ve sifted through a lot of dirt, but we’ve dug up another ten tremendous records to share with all the heavy heads out there.  This volume brings together eight insanely rare and skull-crushingly heavy 45s as well as two previously unreleased bangers. You may remember the Zekes’ jaw dropper “Box” from the First Trip.  If you don’t, you better go back and refresh your memory, you stoner.

05. BROWN ACID - THE FIFTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2017

We’re back! And the hits just keep coming. For the fifth lysergic journey, we’ve assembled 10 heavy

slabs of obscure rock the likes of which have never been seen before… not in this form anyhow. And as usual, the tracks from these impossibly rare records have all been fully cleared through the artists themselves. We’ve gone to great lengths to get the best possible master sources, the worst case scenario being an original 45. ‘Cuz it ain’t worth doing unless you do it right. The legendary Captain Foam kicks off this Trip like an anvil to your skull with a rollicking stomper sounding like The Who with Matt Pike‘s thunderous guitar tone.
