Brown Acid gives these long-lost gems their well deserved moment to shine. Legendary compilations like Nuggets and Pebbles have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth
of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on Brown Acid. Starting in 2015, Barresi, along with Daniel Hall’s RidingEasy Records, began pulling together five collections of rare and weird tracks from rock’s past. The music all comes under Barresi’s umbrella term “Brown Acid”, with the tracks loosely fitting into three sub-genres: hard rock, heavy psych and proto-metal. They’re labels that have confused the snobbiest of musos.RidingEasy Records set out to put out bands who needed records pressed on music fan’s shelves. It launched in 2013 and has a pretty even split of new bands and reissues resurrecting albums from the dead.
11. BROWN ACID - THE ELEVENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2020
We’re now in the double digits of brilliant long-lost, rare, and unreleased hard rock, heavy psych, and
proto-metal tracks from the 60s-70s and clearly this has become a bonafide archaeological movement as each new edition leads us to more exciting new discoveries. Like we’ve done throughout this series, all of these tracks were painstakingly licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. Make yourself comfortable and prepare for yet another deep, deep dive into the treasure trove of dank, subterranean, wild-eyed and hairy rock ’n’ roll.

12. BROWN ACID - THE TWELFTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2021
Well, who’d have thought it? Here’s the twelfth instalment of the Brown Acid series from RidingEasy Records, their ongoing exploration of rare, lost and forgotten treasures from the late 60’s and early70’s. These proto-metal, hard rock and heavy psych riches are continuing to turn up, thankfully curated and
shared with a new, wider audience. They still haven’t run out of steam, which is very good news. Whether they’re discovering hidden gems in dusty tombs, or exhuming abandoned corpses and bringing them back to life – pick your metaphor: the RidingEasy Forensics Department have managed to surprise yet again. Their quest seems never rending, but we can be thankful that these dedicated scholars continue to discover hitherto abandoned sonic delights. It’s harder to pick out gems which shine brighter than the others this time around, but “Brown Acid: the Twelfth Trip” manages to reach a high standard across the board. Very enjoyable, and recommended listening for when Jimi and Janis pop round for some mushroom tea.

13. BROWN ACID - THE THIRTEENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2021
None other thanMonster Magnet’s Dave Wyndorf has described this era in rock and roll as a sort of
Twilight Zone for music. A post-hippie, post flower-power, pre-punk, pre-metal era of burgeoning FM radio, and ‘album-oriented’ rock. Bands high on the fumes of Hendrix, Cream, and Blue Cheer, but also inhaling from the same smoke, and running parallel with Sabbath and Zeppelin, plugged in, turned up, and dropped out. However, a lot of these artists were lost to history, with maybe a only single recorded to document their creations.

14. BROWN ACID - THE FOURTEENTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2022
It’s that time of the year again. Every stoner & weedian’s favorite holiday. 4/20. This also means another installment of RidingEasy Records and Permanent Records, at-this-point, fabled Brown Acidseries. Hard to believe this is now The Fourteenth Trip, but that’s how time seems to be moving these days. Brown
Acidhas gone on to join other legendary singles compilations like the Nuggets comp for garage rock/psychedelic stuff, or the Back From The Gravegarage punk series as must-haves for music nerds, and audiophiles. The series history has been well-covered, including here at The Sleeping Shaman as recently as RidingEasy’s other favorite holiday: Halloween, but the Cliff Notes version is Lance Barresi co-owner of LA’s Permanent Records, and RidingEasy Records Daniel Hall, have joined forces with the mission of digging up as much of the weird, out-of-print, long-lost, Twilight Zone era of rock & roll as they can mine. The post-hippy, pre-punk, proto-metal, garage rock, heavy psych, bombed-out era that existed between 1968-1976.

15. BROWN ACID - THE TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE AMERICAN COMEDOWN ERA) 2020
For the newcomer though, the cliff notes version is Lance Barresi, co-owner of LA’s Permanent Records, and RidingEasy Records Daniel Hall, have joined together on an expedition of digging up as much out-of-print, long lost, acid rock, garage rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal singles form the ‘comedown era’
between 1968-1975 as they can unearth. Most of the artists featured in the Brown Acidseries never released full-lengths, the only documentation of their existence being a 45, perhaps self-financed, sent to local radio stations, and/or labels in the hopes of landing a record deal, but often instead being lost to the annals of time. The Fifteenth Trip, like all the previous fourteen trips, serves up another killer batch of good-to-great rock from the comedown era. There’s a lot of fire right off the bat, as opener Take The Time by The Looking Glassfeatures a menacing, walking, garage rock riff, before unfolding into a frantic, ass-shaking ripper, while second track 444 by The Zoo is a blown-out, distorted boogie-rock good time.
