Romeo Void : Benefactor 1982 Flac & MP3

Romeo  Void was started at the San Francisco Art Institute by Debora Iyall and Frank Zincavage.

The band primarily consisted of saxophonist Benjamin Bossi, vocalist Debora Iyall, guitarist Peter Woods, and bassist Frank Zincavage. The band went through four drummers, starting with Jay Derrah and ending with Aaron Smith.
They released three albums, It's a Condition, Benefactor, and Instincts, along with one EP and singles.

Benefactor is the second studio album  released in 1982.

It was released on CD in 2006 by Wounded Bird Records, with their Never Say Never EP as four bonus tracks. The first version of the song "Never Say Never" is a shorter, "clean" edit suitable for general radio broadcast.

Saxophonist Benjamin Bossi was added to the lineup as an "accident" when Debora Iyall met him while he worked in a deli.

The band's music was generally associated with the New Wave and post-punk movements of the early 1980s, but also experimented with danceable song structures and a saxophonist. Iyall garnered acclaim as a skilled lyricist who explored themes like sexuality and alienation from a female perspective with "dark intelligence" and "searing imagery".

The unforgettable chorus of their best-known song, 1981's "Never Say Never," the phrase on its own makes the song sound like some kind of shock-value novelty, and indeed, that's probably how many people remember it.

Yet a careful listen to the verses, with their intimations of incest, murder, homelessness, and other dark subjects, makes plain that singer/lyricist Debora Iyall has more on her mind than simple salaciousness.

         NEVER  SAY  NEVER

If time itself was his demeanor
There’d be no sunlight or a glimmer
Of sunlight landin on the street
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Nursing their fathers locked inside
They masqueraded as his bride

I might like you better
If we slept together
But there’s somethin
In your eyes that says
Maybe that’s never
Never say never

The slump by the courthouse
With windburn skin
That man could give a fuck
About the grin on your face
As you walk by, randy as a goat
He's sleepin on papers
When he'd be warm in your coat

I might like you better
If we slept together
But there’s somethin
In your eyes that says
Maybe that’s never
Never say never

There’s no easy way to lose your sight
On the street, on the stairs
Who's on your flight
Old couple walks by, as ugly as sin
But he’s got her and she’s got him

Never say never

Romeo Void : Instincts 1984 Flac & MP3

Instincts is the third and final studio album by American new wave band Romeo Void, released in 1984. The single, "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)", reached #35 in the US.
Instincts was released in October 1984, debuted at No. 68 on the Billboard 2000 and proved to be the band's best-selling album.
It also launched their most successful single, "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)," which broke the Billboard Top 40 and peaked at No. 35. Critical reactions were positive.

Despite being the band's most successful effort to date, Columbia pulled the band's promotional support while on a nationwide tour.
"The very next town we got to after they made that decision, there wasn't an A&R person there," said Debora Iyall.
There were no interviews and in-stores arranged as they had been.

All that just ground to a halt." The band returned to San Francisco and soon broke up. Constant touring has been cited by Iyall as the primary reason for the break-up.

"You get tired of each other, and you get intolerant of being uncomfortable and away from your family and your friends."

According to a VH1 reunion episode, the issue of Iyall's weight was the reason for the label dropping them.
In 2003,Debora Iyall agreed with this claim:
"Howie sold us to Columbia Records, and they were like 'Who's this fat chick?'
They decided that was as far as it was going to get, and pulled their support."

The combination of Iyall's powerful vocals and searing imagery with the band's muscular blend of Joy Division's atmospherics and the Gang of Four's rattling momentum,
with Benjamin Bossi's splattering free jazz saxophone coloring everything, made Romeo Void one of the strongest of the American post-punk bands.

Who is he — do you know ?
This man of power but a fool.
They said he was so high and pure,
They also said that he was cruel.

(FROM SLEEVE NOTES TO DOJO 'BEST OF')
One of the classic mid-80s underground bands - seemingly every fanzine of the day carried an interview with them - The Three Johns opted for humour and political belligerence at a time when all around them were intent on making their guitars jangle and handing out jelly babies to audiences dressed in anoraks.
Imaginatively enough, The Three Johns were So called because they comprised three Johns - Messrs Hyatt (vocals), Langford (guitar) and Brennan (bass). Formed on Royal Wedding Day in 1981 as a collective of Leeds-based students, their career began With a run of fine 7-inch singles, two of which '- AWOL' and 'Brain Box' ...

. . . . .    'Death Of The European' was actually a vicious attack on the American destruction of European culture while 'Sold Down The River' summed up the mood of resignation which followed Thatcherism's triumphs of the mid-80s. Both confirmed The Three Johns had musical deftness which belied their perceived on-stage daftness.
...  How good were The Three Johns? In their early days Alan McGhee of Creation Records was desperate to book them for his club (believe it or not) the Three Johns pub in Islington. Think what he could have done with Three Johns instead of just two Gallaghers.

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN
---------------------

Big mouth, open wide, open up those pearly gates of freedom

He's got a snapshot
Flash-light at Checkpoint Charlie
Among the searchlights
A balloon idea floats from his brain
The bubble bursts on his face

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He's in the back seat Multiplication sex drive
he's the receiver he's in credit, he's alive
He is happy. He's alive.

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He is the dead-beat walkman
Of Rock and Roll on the frontier
Listen out for something
American Forces Radio
He's on the late, late Alimony show

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

And now here's twelve year old Tracy With her poem about George Washington:
George Washington was the first
Great American President
And we honour him
And respect him
And we follow in the true American way

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He rides the lightning
is snoring drowns the thunder
Finds his dreams frightening
He won't go under he's alive
Wake up tomorrow he'll be fine

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

Strange figure standing like a monument
in robes of old graffiti barbed wire halo
pushed down on his brow

Temple of pain shaved his head into the euro U.S.crop
tatoo (potsdam strasse mad stop)
stands like a stone like a statue like a monument
kiss the skull

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

Who am I working for?
I don't know which one to think.
Who am I working for these days?

allmusic review
Originally released in 1979, Stiff Little Fingers were Ireland's answer to both the Clash and the Sex Pistols. They had the personal and political stance of the former, and the noisy, pissed off, slash-and-burn musical aesthetic as the latter. Fronted by guitarist and songwriter Jake Burns (he collaborated with journalist Gordon Ogilvie), SLF took off with their two singles "Alternative Ulster," and, for that time, the utterly out of control screaming that was "Suspect Device." These two singles make the purchase price of the album a priority. They represent barely contained youthful anger at social and political mores as righteous, utterly devoid of posturing or falsity and raging to break out. "Alternative Ulster" decries the Irish political sides in the Northern Ireland controversy -- the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Irish Republican Army -- holding them both accountable for bloodshed and social and economic stasis furthering nothing but their own interests. "Suspect Device" which opens the set, screams at the heart of the conflict, that neither side can be believed as both reduce freedom to a buzzword while wielding guns. Both tracks are calls to arms, but of a different sort -- the arms of dialogue and intelligence in the midst of idiocy and murder. Punk rock never sounded so brutal or positive in one band. There are other fine cuts here as well, such as the Bob Marley cover "Johnny Was," reinvented for the times in Northern Ireland; "Wasted Life," another paean to drop out of a society that breeds death and acquiescence for its own sake, and the scathing indictment of the record company that released the album, "Rough Trade."

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS

(Άπό τό «Suspect Device)

(Suspect Device)

(Rough Trade)

(Rough Trade)

(Law and Order)

(Από το «Νο More Of  That»)

(Barbed Wire Love)

Chocolate Watch Band : No Way Out : 1967

The Chocolate Watchband got its start at Foothill College in Los Altos, California in 1965, when guitarists Mark Loomis and Ned Torney , both ex-members of the Chapparals , joined in a fledgling outfit that later included Danny Phay (vocals), Rich Young (bass), Jo Kemling (organ), and drummer Peter Curry (soon succeeded by Gary Andrijasevich).

This early Los Gatos-based version of the Watchband emerged in 1965, just as the British Invasion was starting to crest, and, with their raw, lean sound built on British Invasion-style R&B and pop/rock, achieved great popularity at the college and the surrounding area.

They never made any official, commercial recordings, but a pair of demo tracks that surfaced in the '90s reveals a solid performing unit with some inspired playing especially on the lead guitar and an attractive if not necessarily bracing overall sound, and a lot of potential.

They were a unique phenomenon , based on their recordings, they were a world-class garage punk act, if that's possible, beating the Ramones to the punch by a decade, and showing more consistency than, say, the Litter, and more originality and range than the Shadows of Knight.

While American bands of the period usually either detoured into folk-rock on their way to more elusive flights of languid psychedelia, or fell back on gimmicks and dumbing down their image (à la Paul Revere & the Raiders) to sell records, the Watchband retained an amazing purity of purpose and intent , they owed a considerable (and undeniable) debt to the Rolling Stones for various elements of their sound, but they kept pushing the envelope, at least in intensity, and may even have matched the Stones in their psychedelic ventures when the time came to ante-up musically !

The Only Ones : Baby's Got a Gun : 1980 (Remaster )

The quality of the songwriting on " Baby's Got a Gun" , while still strong, is near to the level of the first two albums,(Or not?) and significantly, the Only Ones recorded their only cover for this LP ("Fools," a hit for country singer Johnny Duncan, with Perrett dueting quite wonderfully with Pauline Murray of Penetration).

And while Perrett was still singing and writing well, the drug addiction that would haunt him for years was catching up with him during these sessions, and Baby's Got a Gun lacks some of the focus and energy of their earlier work. Baby's Got a Gun is clearly the weakest of the Only Ones' three original albums, but for all its faults there's plenty here that testifies to the band's strengths .

"Why Don't You Kill Yourself," "Strange Mouth," and "The Big Sleep" are splendid songs that show the band still had the goods, and "Trouble in the World" and "The Happy Pilgrim" confirm they could reach for a poppier sound without losing their personality in the process.

The Only Ones broke up a year after Baby's Got a Gun came out, but if it captured the sound of a band in decline, you can barely tell unless you're looking for the seams.

Ironically, it was the posthumous release of the sessions for John Peel's BBC show that, more than any of the proper studio releases, accurately displayed the muscle and smarts of this fine band.

There have been many rumors surrounding Perrett's life after the Only Ones, many of them involving an alleged heroin addiction. Perrett did continue to record and release solo projects during the '80s, including a project known as the One in the mid-'90s.
