Alusa Fallax: Intorno Alla Mia Cattiva Educazione 1974

Formed in Oct. 1967 in Milan, Italy - Recorded under the name "Blizzard" in 1977 - Disbanded finally in 1979. Alusa fallax are amongst the ranks of Italian prog bands who only released one album in their career, perhaps surprising when you realise the band existed for around ten years.

The band was formed in Milan in 1969 by keyboard player Massimo Parretti who went in search of musicians to play on a piece of music he'd been asked to write. His search led him to GLI ADELFI, a band that featured an old school friend on guitar and vocals, Guido Gabet. Impressed, Parretti enlisted their help but shortcomings with the keyboard player led him to take his place for the recording. The band changing its name to ALUSA FALLAX was completed by three brothers with the surname Cirla, Augusto (drums, vocals and recorder), Guido (bass and vocals) and Mario (sax, flute, French horn and vocals). The result was a single titled "Dedicato A Chi Amo" followed the same year by another called "Tutto Passa".

They then started playing live shows but it wasn't until 1974 that the album "Intorno Alla Mia Cattiva Educazione" was released. Musically the album is largely in a symphonic style with classical and occasional jazz influences, with intelligent utilization of acoustic and electric instrumentation. Although

comprising of thirteen tracks they are divided into two long suites with strong musicianship throughout. The band kept playing and released their one and only album in 1974 on Fonit; a great little-known gem, in the best Italian prog tradition, led by keyboards with classical influences, it reminds the best things Banco del Mutuo Soccorso ever made. The album received very little promotion and was only pressed in a quantity of 5000. They continued to make their living from the live circuit but not through playing progressive rock. Disco became big news towards the end of the seventies and they adopted this style for their live shows and even released a single under the name BLIZZARD before finally splitting up in 1979.

INTORNO ALLA MIA CATTIVA EDUCAZIONE 1974

A classic! One of the most brilliant works in Italian progressive style. If I could, I would give it six stars, because "In Torno..." is one of the most exquisite stuffs I heard. Cirla's emotive rough voice reminds me

Leonardo Sasso's voice (LOCANDA DELLE FATE singer, another Italian monster), and the music is complex, melodic and beautiful. Lots of Mellotron, flutes and acoustic guitar along 13 non-separated tracks, conforming a fascinating concept album. Classic landscapes, jazzy touches and impressive originality. There are incredibly wonderful eleven minutes here, among tracks 2 and 4, that can resume the progressive rock quintessence, but the rest of "In Torno..." never loses interest. A true masterpiece!

Catapilla: Catapilla 1971 + Changes 1972

Catapilla was an English progressive rock band active in the early 1970s. They released two albums on the major record label Vertigo Records. The band was formed in 1970 in London, England. The

original lineup consisted of saxophonists Robert Calvert and Hugh Eaglestone, drummer Malcolm Frith, bassist Dave Taylor, guitarist Graham Wilson, woodwinds player Thierry Rheinhardt, and vocalist Jo Meek. Jo Meek's time with the band was brief; she was replaced by her sister Anna by the time of the band's earliest live performances. With vocalist Anna Meek and saxophonist Robert Calvert leading the way, British progressive rock band Catapilla created some of England's most innovative music of the early '70s.

Although they disbanded shortly after the release of their second album, Changes, the group's influence

continues to be felt. In "Catapilla" perhaps the production is not so strong as it was necessary. The album consists of four tracks with extended, instrumental passages where guitar, saxophone, and keyboards get lots of solo space. Far superior to their first album, "Changes" is a very atmospheric piece of music. Their sound is more ethereal and spacey, but still a terrific blend of jazz rock/brass rock with an occasional psychedelic edge. This is another essential album you must hunt down and add to your collection.

CATAPILLA - CATAPILLA 1971

The debut album by one of the most dramatic and certainly the most visionary of all the British prog bands saddled with the epithet jazz-rock opens with little care for any of that.
Taking a deep draught from the King Crimson/Van Der Graaf Generator book of sonic brutality, the opening "Naked

Death" is a hard-riffing, thunderous clatter of apocalyptic imagery which -- if Crimson hadn't already dropped the same bomb with "21st Century Schizoid Man" -- might have proved as lethal as the weaponry it discusses. The same taste for Armageddon permeates the remainder of the album. Some spectacular moments drift through the carnage; Robert Calvert's sax and Graham Wilson's guitar might be most comfortable in full bludgeoning mode, but they can show restraint as well. The fact is, Catapilla not only completes the marathon, they also leave you wondering how 24 minutes passed so quickly.

CATAPILLA - CHANGES 1972

A magnificent disc, Changes offered an absolute shift away from the grinding Armageddon of Catapilla's debut, with the opening "Reflections" viciously carving out a new territory which floats with breathtaking audacity. For over 12 minutes, vocalist Anna Meek and saxophonist Robert Calvert duel and duet in a manner which would influence everything from Deep Purple's voice and guitar

confabulations to Gong's spectral, spacy meanderings. Indeed, experienced Catapilla-watchers will not have been surprised to see Calvert working with that band's Gilli Smyth in the mid-'90s; the blueprint is all over "Reflections." Everything you thought you knew about Catapilla, comes close to rewriting prog history as well. A third album from this most visionary of bands, drawing its impetus from "Reflections" and "It Could Only Happen," might have rendered even Dark Side of the Moon academic. As it is, we can only dream wistfully, "What if?"

Strawbs: A Taste Of Strawbs (5 CD Compilation 2006)

Strawbs (or The Strawbs) are an English rock band founded in 1964, led by Dave Cousins. Although the band started out as a bluegrass group they eventually moved on to other styles such as

folk, folk rock, (briefly) glam rock and progressive rock. Members included Sandy Denny (who later went on to join Fairport Convention), Rick Wakeman (who was discovered whilst in the Strawbs, joined Yes and has had a lengthy solo career)
, Richard Hudson and John Ford (who wrote "Part Of The Union" and then spun off as Hudson-Ford). They are best known for their hit, "Part Of The Union", which reached number two in the UK charts in February 1973, as well as for "Lay Down" a number 12 UK hit from the same LP. Their album Hero And Heroine (1974) was voted one of the Top 50 prog records of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

A Taste of Strawbs is a box-set album by Strawbs. Instead of being a "best of" album, the compilers (Dave Cousins and Dick Greener) have attempted to present alternative versions of some well-known songs plus

some previously unreleased material. Included are some very old songs by The Strawberry Hill Boys, with Dave Cousins, Tony Hooper and Ron Chesterman, also are some very interesting songs by Sandy Denny and The Strawbs, and outtakes from different periods of the band's career. This five-CD set constitutes as full an account of the first 40 years of the Strawbs' history as you're ever likely to see, and also manages to close some essential gaps in the group's early history that Universal Music has otherwise left wide open for decades on CD, as well as some gaps left at the time, in the late '60s, '70s, and beyond, owing to the exigencies of the recording industry.

That said, however, this set -- despite its five-hour-plus running time -- also very strategically avoids

including much that is familiar or, at least, anything in its familiar version; between the vault discoveries of unused takes of released tracks, and songs that were never issued, plus remixes and early takes of songs that were subsequently heavily redone, this is the largest body of "new" Strawbs material that anyone except for Dave Cousins and some bandmembers will ever have encountered. The sound here ranges from very good to excellent throughout, and there's not a single note of apology or explanation needed for the presence of any of the 89 songs featured in this set.

It may be pricey, and it isn't complete in terms of musical history, but it is one of the most comprehensive

collections of rarities and triumphant musical moments one is ever likely to see of this band's work. With so many of the bands finest tracks here, almost always in a different form to that which we originally came to know, this is both a gathering of their greatest works, and a collectors paradise of rare and unheard material. "A taste of Strawbs" is an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys the music of this wonderful band. The good news is that is off set by an excellent booklet and a fifth disc available only with the first 1000 copies. Essential for Strawbs fans BUT I would suggest the individual albums first.

Van Der Graaf Generation: Discography 1969 - 1977

In England, 1967 Chris Judge SMITH formed 'VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR', but after his departure it was up to Peter HAMMILL (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Hugh BANTON (organ, bass on organ), David JACKSON (sax, flute) and Guy EVANS (drums) to become one of progressive

rock most proliferate and unique bands as well as the first band to be signed to the Famous Charisma Label.
The band was named after the scientific instrument 'the Van de Graaff generator', which is used for accumulating high voltage bolts. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR (VdGG for short) is known for its extrovert dynamics (ranging from slow, calm & peaceful to fierce & heavy), its intense and emotional 'love it or hate it' vocals by Peter HAMMILL, its celebrated contribution to extended progressive songwriting and its combination of psychedelic, jazz, classical and avant-garde or even acid influences. Moreover, VdGG can be seen as the first band that was to combine the very progressive with the very personal, whereas other bands used to work with abstractions and fantasy.

Writing in Record Collector, Toby Manning said the music was "philosophical, even intellectual, complex .. at times, terrifying". While the music on The Aerosol Grey Machine (September 1969) has a

more pastoral, hippie feel, with prominent use of Hammill's acoustic guitar, later work featured more complex instrumentation and arrangements. Hammill thinks the style of the band evolved due to the culture of music in the late 1960s, stating "the whole of music was laid out in front of you ... it was the blues in wonky time signatures." Both Hammill and Banton have stated that Jimi Hendrix was an influence on the band's sound, with Hammill remarking that "there'd been distortion before, but there hadn't been that real out-there attitude to sound in itself". The group's experimental style has also been compared to Krautrock bands such as Can.

Peter HAMMILL has a talent for singing out intense graving, anger, panic and confusion whilst still being able to sing warm and caring in other passages. The band never really fitted in the symphonic progressive rock subgenre because of its widespread influences and unique style, though the band would have symphonic leanings throughout it's career. Unusual for the time was the focus on organ, drums and sax,

whereas in the sixties the guitar and the bass guitar had played a major role.  The band had a leading role in the very first progressive phase releasing high-rated albums from 1970 to 1975. The strong conceptual 'H to He Who am the only one' (1970), the intense and highly innovative and daring 'Pawn Hearts' (1971), the bleak and ever evolving 'Godbluff' (1975) and the matured 'Still Life' (1976) are often cited as masterpieces of the progressive genre. Alongside VdGG there would be a very interesting solo-career for Peter HAMMILL who frequently invited members of the band to come and join on his seventies recordings, some of which are seen as 'lost VdGG albums'. The band stopped performing in its classic line-up after 1976, not to return until 2005.

Retrospection. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR has always remained too small to be a widely recognized act (like for instance Genesis or Yes), yet it was too big to get an illustrious title as '

underground band'. The band acquired some devoted following over the years and is nowadays considered to be one of the biggest acts of progressive rock history, as the amount of reviews and debates on PA can underline. For lot of us their music has proven to be very hard to get into, but it is even harder to live without it once you've acquired a taste for the band. The way the band combines the very personal with the abstract sound of progression creates a fascination that lives on and the way Peter HAMMILL puts his soul in the music seems to be untouchable for other musicians.
