The Volta Sound: Dandelion Wine 2004 + Good Lookin out, Ya'll 2011 + Like Entropy 2014

 

Volta Sound [with the name being taken from the Italian physicist, who in 1800 invented the voltaic pile, which was the first source of continuous electric current. The volt unit of electromotive force is named for him. Thus Volta Sound, being an electric sound ...] is an etherial semi translucent band hailing from Cleveland, Ohio. The band were known for their live performances and their albums on

Orange Sky Records. Fred Mills of Magnet wrote: "Taut dynamics, stoned vocals and fluid organ/fretboard drone locate the Volta Sound in the vicinity of the Warlocks or Brian Jonestown Massacre. Mike Cormier (vocals, acoustic guitar, tambourine), Ben Yawns (guitar, trumpet, trombone), Matt Cassidy (electric guitar, vocals), Todd "T.D." Vainisi (combo organs), David Geddes (bass), and Mike Prieto (drums). The lineup coalesced officially in 2000 and officially came together as a group in mid-2000. They are one of several bands associated with the local Davenport Records label, founded by Cassidy in nearby Kent, OH (near Akron and Cleveland). In addition to the Volta Sound, the other groups in this loose-knit collective share common members and often play together on the same bill.
                      

Had I not been traveling this wayward psychedelic road for so many lightyears with the likes of Spacemen 3, Pink Floyd, and BJM being part of the lexicon of my musical life, I think I might be much more impressed with the band. Back in 2001, after two sleepless nights hounded by coyotes in the New Mexico desert, The Volta Sound gathered its stuff and headed for California. After a run in with Greg

Shaw and Anton Newcombe of Bomp! and BJM, they decided to start putting out and away they went! 4 albums, 1 EP and 3 tours with Orange Sky and Elephant Stone Records later, it was time to put on some pants and maybe get some food. The Volta Sound found itself releasing 3 albums back to back in the summer of 2012 and totally hooking up, pants and all, with Joe Foster and Sterling Songs Publishing. After adding Chad "Chad Hill" Hill to it's roster and briefly touring with Sterling Roswell of Spacemen 3 and The Darkside, The Volta Sound has reached it's full girth and is now ready to spread itself all over the place. So watch out. 
                           

Guitarist Cormier and his friends formed the Volta Sound specifically to play the space rock-influenced material that Cormier had written for himself to sing. The Volta Sound soon built up a

considerable following in the Cleveland area, opening for bands traveling through on tour such as the Brian Jonestown Massacre. In 1999, the band's first four-track recordings were compiled for the limited-edition release of Everything's Alright. As their reputation grew outside the Midwest, several U.S. labels began vying to sign the band, but the winning imprint was Orange Sky Records, a new division of the Dionysus reissue label. The Volta Sound's official debut, My All American Girl, was issued in spring 2002, just as the band began their first Southwestern U.S. tour.

Such a fab album from a criminally under-appreciated band. Yellow and green for the cover art, a plant-based product for an album name -- if the Volta Sound hadn't started their new album Dandelion Wine with a low-key acoustic strum/singalong redolent of hippie vibes, it would have been a strange thing indeed. Having already released a couple of enjoyable efforts, the Volta Sound's 2004 turn isn't quite their unplugged album but it does generally aim for a hazy, pleasant campfire singalong atmosphere spiked with a bit of Beatles-tinged psychedelia, thus the horn additions on songs like "There Is No Question" and the horn and flutes both on the merry "I Knew You'd Know," which is actually a pretty good dance number in its own way as well.

02. THE VOLTA SOUND - GOOD LOOKIN OUT, YA'LL 2011

                            

The Volta Sound dips rhythms reminiscent of The Velvet Underground into a bucketful of sticky American beach rock for this release. The band's happy, West Coast '60s sheen is hard to resist and it's not long before you find yourself in the car singing along with the four-part harmonies that have clawed their way into your subconscious.

03. THE VOLTA SOUND - LIKE ENTROPY 2014

                        

Re-release of their 2009(ish) 'Floppy' album, but with new title and released only as digital file available on Bandcamp and social media only, but has since been removed. This album was originally recorded around 2009/2010 and had a limited physical release titled 'Floppy' (packaged to look like a floppy disc). Great songs that are stoned, hazy and very droney. "Sleeping Potion" is one of the all time great Volta Sound tunes that dates back to their early days. This is a different version of the tune that was included on their 'Cuts' comp.
What The Volta Sound do, is like nothing anyone else does … and that’s probably because the underlying premiss of their music is to have fun, to enjoy the moment, to get lost in the rapture, and sincerely create something that’s going to take you for a walk through splintered sunlight.  Though that being said, their penchant for capturing moonbeams in a jar is a given understatement.

The Virgineers: The Virgineers 1999 + Singles

 

On first mention, The Virgineers sounds like the name of some folk revival group who would be playing Kingston Trio numbers at state fairs. One listen to their self-titled, and, so far, only album, though, reveals

a group (“virgin ears,” get it?) that specializes in turning the way-back clock to the paisley summer of ’67. They sound like The Beatles during their Sgt. Pepper / Magical Mystery Tour period, along with Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, as filtered through XTC, especially in their Dukes of Stratosphear psychedelic guise. As a matter of fact, if you loved those two mid-‘80s Dukes platters (25 O’Clock and Psonic Psunspot), then you will flip your paisley wigs over this blotter of Owsley-drenched sunshine. Just like on those two albums, you get to have fun playing spot-the-‘60s-influence.
                             

Fans of the Virgineers continue to clamor for more info about the secretive pair, and many find it hard to believe they haven't yet broken through the misty ether that surrounds them and confounds those who would want to know more. Though Ken Zawacki (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion) and Bruce Lash

(vocals, bass, guitars, keyboards, percussion) claim on their website that the Virgineers "formed when the lads met at an art school for wayward girls in their hometown of Sydville, an Antarctic seaport built on the baby octopus trade," they are actually a dynamic duo originally hailing from Chicago. Many of the songs reveal the more whimsical, English tea-garden variety of psychedelia, which bands like The Hollies and Village Green-era Kinks specialized in. The period production techniques are spot-on, and they have quite a flair for memorable melodies.
                     

                       
This band has remained a mystery to many.  This album came out more than a decade ago, though, and

apparently is almost impossible to find these days. According to their website, where you can still purchase it as a download, they have also released a handful of singles since then, including one that just came out back in February, “Valentine,” which still carries on the ’60s vibe. If and when they are ever going to release a follow-up to this album, though, I haven’t a clue.

The Soft Boys: Side Three 2002

                 

 

The Soft Boys came into my head in Cambridge, in the hot, dry summer of 1976 while punk was being

conjured up by a small group of artists and villains in London. The title Side Three refers to the fact that five of the six songs on this EP were recorded by the reunited Soft Boys during the sessions for their 2002 "comeback" album, Nextdoorland, though "Side Two" might have been slightly more apt -- you could take these outtakes, drop them right into the middle of the album, and they would fit perfectly fine (and wouldn't even exceed the capacity of a compact disc). 
                          

Side Three doesn't sound at all like a collections of castoffs or rejects -- these songs easily live up to

Nextdoorland's high standards, with Robyn Hitchcock and Kimberley Rew as splendid as ever on guitars and Morris Windsor and Matthew Seligman proving once again that they're an elegant and supremely musical rhythm section, as Hitchcock brings still more delectably angular songs to the group's repertoire. These tunes are the dessert that tops off the banquet of the Soft Boys' return to the studio, and if you're any kind of a fan, you'll want to hear this.

The Soft Boys: Discography 1979 - 2002

 

The Soft Boys were an English rock band led by guitarist Robyn Hitchcock. The band formed in 1976 in

Cambridge, England and released two albums before disbanding in 1981. Though the Soft Boys’ initial career was brief, their style of psychedelic music and retro folk-rock had a big influence on the development of jangle pop, indie rock, and neo-psychedelia during the 1980s and beyond. The Soft Boys were one the most influential British bands of their time in shaping alternative and indie music, though they were considered a quirky cult item in their original run. 
                       

Led by Robyn Hitchcock, the group blended edgy pop and punk's fearlessness with a love of

psychedelia and folk-rock. Their offbeat and hooky melodies, matched with Hitchcock's witty, surreal lyrics, set them apart from their peers, and R.E.M. were just the best known of the many bands that learned from their example. They made a striking debut with 1979's A Can of Bees, and 1980's Underwater Moonlight was an edgy, joyous masterpiece that led the way to Hitchcock's solo career. 
                  

Matthew Seligman replaced Metcalfe on bass in 1979.  The band broke up in 1981 after the release of

their second album, Underwater Moonlight.  Rew formed the more mainstream pop group Katrina and the Waves. Hitchcock went on to a prolific career with a similar whimsical, surrealistic style.  In 1984, he formed Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians with fellow Soft Boys Morris Windsor and Andy Metcalfe and went on to tour and record for ten years. 
                          

They were briefly joined by Rew, Jim Melton and Seligman in a re-formed Soft Boys for a UK tour in

1994 to mark the release of a box set of their work. They briefly came together again in 2001 without Metcalfe for the 20th anniversary of Underwater Moonlight and the release of a new album, 2002’s Nextdoorland. They disbanded once again in 2003. Matthew Seligman died in 2020 due to complications from the COVID-19 virus; he was 64 years old. In 2025, Underwater Moonlight was given a deluxe reissue on CD and LP to honor the album's 45th anniversary.

The Soft Boys, like so many other underground miscreants in the '70s, spent their formative years

(unbeknownst to them) generating enough critical capital to earn much sought-after biographical adjectives like “influential” and “underrated.” The Robyn Hitchcock-led, Cambridge, England-born, pseudo-psych rock outfit's shared love for all things Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, and Syd Barrett was both venerated and blown to smithereens on their 1979 debut long-player, A Can of Bees.

02. THE SOFT BOYS - UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT 1980

                         

More angular and jarring than the band’s beloved 1980 follow-up, Underwater Moonlight, Hitchcock, Kimberly Rew, Morris Windsor, and Andy Metcalfe sounded positively possessed, channeling both '60s progressive rock and late-'70s punk into an unholy guitar-driven onslaught fueled by Hitchcock's surreal

lyrics: opening a record with a line like “feel like asking a tree for an autograph” is one thing, but backing up those words with an atonal, apocalyptic blues riff is another. Although the neo-psychedelic flourishes are fascinating, the key to record's success is how each song is constructed around rock-solid hooks and melodies that instantly work their way into the subconscious. In fact, that's the most notable thing about Underwater Moonlight -- it updates jangling, melodic guitar pop for the post-punk world, which made it a touchstone for much of the underground pop of the mid-'80s, particularly R.E.M.

Is Nextdoorland an instant classic like Underwater Moonlight? No. Is that comparison fair? Probably not.

Are The Soft Boys still a strong and viable band in 2002? Yes, indeed -- Nextdoorland is a more than worthy addition to their catalog, and proves that two decades apart has not diluted their remarkable chemistry. If we're very lucky, The Soft Boys might even favor us with another album or two just as strong.

Psychic Lemon: Psychic Lemon 2016 + Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay 2018

             

 

Psychic Lemon describe their sound as a blend of space rock, krautrock and psych. The band used to

record in a studio in the back of a small garden in Cambridge, but got evicted and now lead a nomadic existence. The band's influences are broad, but choice artists include Hawkwind, Goat and Amon Düül II. They have released albums on Drone Rock Records (UK) and Tonzonen Records (DE), and have been featured on the compilation The Reverb Conspiracy Volume Six by Fuzz Club (UK). 
                  

PSYCHIC LEMON started as a four-piece progressive rock band, comprised of Andrew Briston

(guitar, keyboard), Andrew Hibberd (bass), George Horler (guitar) and Martin Law (percussion). Focussed on a blend of space and kraut rock they played their first rehearsal together in early 2014, everyone looking for a new musical challenge.
                 

The member's goal is to entertain, without compromise. The band's influences are broad, favourites

include Goat, Syd Barrett, The Heads and Amon Düül II. Their self-titled debut album was released in March 2016. Horler left the band soon after and the next album 'Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay' followed early 2018 via German Tonzonen Records label.

Droney space rock is everywhere these days (even while it's not particularly popular, at least in a mainstream sense) which I think makes us value things like this less than we should.
