Fields Of The Nephilim : Dawnrazor 1987

Fields of the Nephilim are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England in 1984. The original line-up consisted of vocalist Carl McCoy, saxophonist Gary Wisker, guitarist Paul Wright and brother "Nod" Wright on drums and Tony Pettitt on bass. After the release of the debut EP Burning the Fields, Wisker left the band and was replaced by Peter Yates as second guitarist to what is considered the 'classic' line-up.

Dawnrazor is the debut studio album by English gothic rock band Fields of the Nephilim. It was released in May 1987, through record label Situation Two.
The introductory track contains a sample of the Ennio Morricone theme "Man with the Harmonica" from Sergio Leone's epic 1968 western film Once Upon a Time in the West.

 AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett

Losing the saxophone player from earlier EPs and taking advantage of better budgets and studios, the Nephilim on their first full album established themselves as serious contenders in the goth world.

It certainly didn't hurt having signed to Beggars Banquet, home of such acts as Bauhaus and the Cult, though the more obvious source of the Nephilim's sound at this point was the Sisters of Mercy, various attempts to deny it aside.

Like Eldritch's crew, the Nephilim fivesome weren't aiming just for the clad-in-black audience, but at being a great group in general; while that goal wasn't quite achieved on Dawnrazor, the band came very close. With sympathetic and evocative production throughout by Bill Buchanan, the album strongly showcases another chief element of the Nephilim's sound: Ennio Morricone.

The at-the-time totally outrageous fusion of smoky, cinematic spaghetti western guitars with the doom-wracked ominous flavor of the music in general, not to mention McCoy's growled invocations of
pagan ceremonies and mystic energy, provoked a lot of merriment from outside observers. The Nephilim stuck to their guns, though, and by wisely never cracking a smile on this album, they avoided the cheap ironic way out. Songs here which would become classics in the band's repertoire included the fiery "Preacher Man," which sounds like what would happen if Sergio Leone filmed a Stephen King story; the quick, dark gallop of "Power" (originally a separate single, then added to the album on later pressings); and the slow, powerful build of the title track, featuring McCoy practically calling the demons down on his head. ;'.?;'

For all of the undeniable musicianship and storming fury of the songs, sometimes things just get a little too goofy for words, as revealed in a classic, unintentionally hilarious lyric by McCoy from "Vet for the Insane": "The flowers in the kitchen...WEEP for you!."

Fields Of The Nephilim : For her Light ( Two ) 1990

Fields of the Nephilim's initial sound incorporated elements of hard rock, gothic rock, heavy metal and psychedelic rock, and comprised a bass and guitar driven sound underpinned by McCoy's growled vocals.

Lyrically, the band incorporated magical themes, referencing the Cthulhu Mythos, the Sumerian religion, Chaos magic and the works of Aleister Crowley.

The band had a "dust and death" image, associated with characters from Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns and often wore cowboy dusters with a weather-beaten look during photoshoots. This weather-beaten look was attained by dusting themselves down with, by their own admission, Mother's Pride flour.

This also proved problematic for the band as in May 1988, Nottinghamshire Police detained the band whilst a suspect substance was tested for drugs. This was later determined to be nothing but flour from the stage set.

FOR HER LIGHT  LYRICS

How lonely you are waiting at the Sunday park
I'll elude you, I will lose you
Existing were no soul apart

You stand on a platform
Your effigy dissolves in my hands

When I feel like someone to lie on
And I feel like someone to rely on

You can't wake up

Illusions born of the air
Something seems so precious there

I'll elude you, I will lose you
As rehearsal of my despair

When I feel like someone to lie on
And I feel like someone to die on

You can't wake up
Oh here me
I'm what you have left

Here I am
In this necrologue of love

Fields Of The nephilim : Power Ep 1986

Of all the bands involved in Britain's goth rock movement of the 1980s, Fields of the Nephilim were the most believable. The group's cryptic, occult-inspired songs were sung in a guttural roar by vocalist Carl McCoy.

Live appearances were shrouded with dim light and smoke machines, while bandmembers stalked the stagein black desperado gear inspired by western dress. The group was also one of the longest lived of the original goth rock groups, finally breaking up in 1991 when McCoy left for another project. Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with an original lineup of McCoy, guitarist Paul Wright, his brother Nod on drums, saxophonist Gary Whisker, and bassist Tony Pettitt.
The quintet played many live shows and released the EP Burning the Fields in late 1984. Whisker then left the band, just as Peter Yates was added as a second guitarist. Beggar's Banquet, also the home of goth rockers Southern Death Cult and Bauhaus, signed the Nephilim and released the singles "Power" and "Preacher Man" in 1986.

Both did well on the independent charts; "Preacher Man" made it to number two, increasing the expectation for debut album Dawnrazor, which appeared in 1987. The album also did well on the indie charts, but later that year Fields of the Nephilim finally cracked the pop singles chart with "Blue Water."
In June 1988, second album The Nephilim reached number 12 in the pop charts, while the single "Moonchild" made number 28. A live video titled Forever Remain was also released in 1988.

The May 1989 single "Psychonaut" also cracked the Top 40, but the resulting Elizium (1990) proved to be the group's last studio effort. The live double album Earth Inferno was also released in 1990, and the singles "For Her Light" and "Sumerland (Dreamed)" both charted, but Carl McCoy left the band and took the name with him in October 1991.

Remaining members Yates, Pettitt, and the Wright brothers added vocalist Alan Delaney and released What Starts, Ends (1992) as Rubicon; McCoy formed Nefilim, and began releasing material, including the 1996 album Zoon. Beggar's Banquet issued a two-disc retrospective in 1994 titled Revelations.

Nothing was heard from the band until 2002 when Fallen appeared. Although the album looked new, it was a collection of outtakes released without the permission of the band. They truly returned in 2006 with Mourning Sun, and played live often during the 2000s and 2010s. Studio recording took place during 2014, and the band shared a pair of singles "Earthbound" and "Prophecy" for an album with the working title The Darkness Before Dawn.

MOONCHILD Lyrics

Well it's a righteous dream
Out of mind
A righteous dream
Out of mind
Is it right just dreaming
Out of my day

Take your horses
Let them crawl
Put them in their cages
That's righteous for your soul

Open your eyes
Despite what seems
Longevity
That's a righteous part of me

Moonchild
Lower me down, lower me down
Moonchild
Lower me down down down down down down

Well it's a righteous day
Out of mind
A righteous day

Never return, I'm waiting no more
They take no prisoners in the promised war
I'll die for this
I'll die for this
Take it away

Moonchild
Take off for safer places
Can't you see
You're losing me

Well I'm listening to an empty hall
You can't see for they've burned before
They take me down to the window shame
Longevity hear my fame

Moonchild

Precious for the lost

Fields Of The Nephilim : The Nephilim 1988

Fields of the Nephilim
are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage , Hertfordshire in 1984. The original line-up consisted of vocalist Carl McCoy , saxophonist Gary Whisker , Tony Pettitt on bass , guitarist Paul Wright and drummer Alexander "Nod" Wright . Following the release of the debut EP Burning the Fields, Whisker left the band to be replaced by Peter Yates as second guitarist.

The band's name refers to a Biblical race of giants or angel-human hybrids , known as the Nephilim . Although they have not received substantial mainstream success , the band's seminal sound has proved highly influential , especially in the genre of gothic rock and , later on , gothic metal and rock noir.

Nefilim
were a race that came to dominate the antediluvian (pre-flood) world , and are referred to in the Bible as the heroes of old , men of renown .
They were reportedly the children born to the "Sons of God" by the "daughters of men". It is also most important to note that they are mentioned almost simultaneous to God's statement that He would destroy the earth by flood , and it seems from this association that their effect upon mankind was one of the primary justifications that brought the destruction.

The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.

Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal. His days will be a hundred and twenty years."

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also afterward when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them.

They were the heroes of old , men of renown.

The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created , from the face of the earth men and animals , and creatures that move along the ground , and birds of the air for I am grieved that I have made them." ( Genesis 6:1-7 )

LAST EXIT FOR THE LOST

Would you pay life's pleasures to see me
Does it hurt for I want you to remain
I run your hair through in another decade
Summerland holds me in sumerian haze

Pain in places where the lovers mourn
Arranging the play things up and down the hall

Forever remain for every day
My honour remains
Forever remain

Between the spaces along the wall
Appearing faces that disappear at dawn
We're getting closer I can see the door
Closer and closer Kthulhu calls

Forever remain
Forever remain

You'll seek it it'll take a while
You'll seek this if it's a thousand miles
Take what fate brings eternal and desire
I'll change those faces then I take their smile

We're getting close to you I can see the door
Closer and closer or is it there at all

Forever remain
Forever remain

This could be my last regress
Last exit for the lost
This could be my last regress
Last exit for the lost
This could be my last regress
Precious for the lost
