Ciccada: A Child In The Mirror 2010 + The Finest Of Miracles 2015

 

Ciccada came to be in 2005 as Nicolas Nikolopoulos (flute, keyboards) and Yorgos Mouchos (guitars)

joined forces, soon joined in by vocalist Evangelia Kozoni (who also plays accordion and percussion), thus forming the core of the band. More musicians came and went as years went by and in their first album they are joined in by bassist Omiros Komninos and contributions from session musicians.
                    

While other reviewers and the press release cite Jethro Tull, Renaissance, Gentle Giant and the likes as influences, which is all well if you'd like to get an idea of what to expect, I'll chime in with two notions:

One, I personally would place Ciccada in a "camp" along with Viima and their "symphonic folk prog rock" style. Two, instead of searching for labeling and sound-alike bands, I'll say this: Ciccada's music finds its inspiration and characteristics from symphonic prog, folk and to a lesser extent jazz. The result as I hear it, is a compelling sound that doesn't appear as a senseless mélange as can be the case sometimes.
                      

The music of CICCADA is heavily rooted in folk music; it's complex, compelling, borrowing influneces from many other spheres of progressive rock or more. If you're intrigued by fusing the most

complex moments of GRYPHON and GENTLE GIANT, this band is highly recommended. Ciccada draw on many musical styles with folk being high on the list, but there's also jazz, classical touches and some symphonic prog too. This is all played by highly skilled musicians in complex arrangements that for the large part is played with a lightness of touch that is rare, even in prog. To cap it all off there's the lovely and pure vocal delivery of Evangelia Kozoni, who sings partly in her native tongue and partly in English.

And now some tunes in Greece style. A strong and impressive debut effort from this Greek ensemble,

taking the art of sophisticated folk inspired music into new and exciting territories at their best. I appreciate very much their use of varied instruments to create a rich and spacey sound (acoustic and electric guitars, flute, clarinet, strings, French horn, trumpet, glockenspiel, piano, violoncello and of course bass and drums). Another aspect I like here is the balance between the mellow and the less delicate.
                    

Their blend of medieval inspired folk wanderings blended with touches of jazz and symphonic

progressive rock isn't a novelty in itself, but the manner in which these elements are blended together is something of a novelty. In particular in the cases where guitar riffs of a more metal oriented nature are utilized to good dramatic effect, but also when the organ, clarinet and various additional instruments for intriguing and richly layered soundscapes with ample room for subtle dissonances and disharmonies, with the occasional jazz-tinged motif sneaking in on these themes as well.

To γκρουπ σχηματίστηκε σιγά σιγά, ο αρχικός πυρήνας το 2005 ήταν ο  Γιώργος Μούχος στην κιθάρα

και ο Νίκος Νικολόπουλος στο φλάουτο και τα πλήκτρα και στη συνέχεια έγιναν τριμελής μπάντα με την Ευαγγελία Κοζώνη (φωνητικά). Το 2010 ηχογραφήθηκε το πρώτο άλμπουμ και ήρθε μαζί τους στο Μιλάνο για τις ηχογραφήσεις ο Όμηρος Κομνηνός (μπάσο), με κάποιους Ιταλούς μουσικούς να γράφουν εκεί, αλλά αναζητήσαν στη συνέχεια νέα μέλη σε μόνιμη βάση.
           

[Ναι, μου αρέσει αυτό το ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ του ελληνικού συγκροτήματος Ciccada. Στην πραγματικότητα, δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ καλύτερο ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ σε οποιοδήποτε είδος. Αν και ο βασικός ήχος που βρίσκεται στο A Child in the Mirror είναι ρετρό prog, έχουμε πολλά φλάουτα και

κλαρίνα εκτός από κάποια μεσαιωνικά όργανα. Ενώ λάτρεψα αυτόν τον λαϊκό/μεσαιωνικό ήχο, μου άρεσε επίσης η τζαζ καθώς και η επιρροή της μουσικής δωματίου που βρέθηκε στο A Child in the Mirror. Υποθέτω ότι η progarchives έχει τα λεφτά για να ονομάσει τους Ciccada eclectic prog. Μπορούν να το ονομάσουν ό,τι είδους prog θέλουν, αλλά ξέρω ότι το λατρεύω. Λατρεύω επίσης τη φωνή της γυναικείας τραγουδίστριας Ευαγγελίας Κοζώνη καθώς είναι τέλεια και έχει πολύ ευχάριστη φωνή.

CICCADA - THE FINEST OF MIRACLES 2015

                 

It's been five years since Greece's Ciccada released their highly acclaimed debut album, A Child in the

Mirror on AltrOck Records. Now they are back with an album that displays the maturation process the band has undergone in both recording and compositional technique. The songs of The Finest of Miracles show improved mastery of the band's proclivity for weaving sophisticated instrumental structures using their multiplicity of ancient and traditional folk instruments integrated with modern electrified instruments.
                

They have also refined their symphonic sensibilities, as is displayed in the long-playing masterpieces,

"Around the Fire" and the 18-minute long "The Finest of Miracles Suite." They are also much more evenly paced, eliminating the occasional tendency they had previously to over-do or flood passages with too much information.
                              

                   
Diversity is something of a central characteristic to be given Ciccada's second album. The foundation of

their style is progressive folk rock, but with details and excursions from jazz, traditional folk music and symphonic progressive rock incorporated into the totality, alongside elements that one might describe as chamber rock to boot (not to be confused with RIO).
            

A well made album on all levels, and while not as challenging as it may sound from description, the

overall production merits that description due to the sheer diversity of the material. As the band cites bands such as Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Gryphon as sources of inspiration, those with an affection for those bands appear to be a likely key audience for this CD, and I'd suggest that those with a general affection for bands with a diverse and varied sound, style and expression to give this one a spin as well.

Έχουν περάσει πέντε χρόνια από τότε που οι Greece's Ciccada κυκλοφόρησαν το πολυβραβευμένο

ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ τους, A Child in the Mirror στην AltrOck Records. Τώρα επιστρέφουν με ένα άλμπουμ που δείχνει τη διαδικασία ωρίμανσης που έχει υποστεί η μπάντα τόσο στην τεχνική της ηχογράφησης όσο και στη σύνθεση. Τα τραγούδια των The Finest of Miracles δείχνουν βελτιωμένη γνώση της τάσης του συγκροτήματος να υφαίνει εξελιγμένες οργανικές δομές χρησιμοποιώντας την πληθώρα αρχαίων και παραδοσιακών λαϊκών οργάνων ενσωματωμένα με σύγχρονα ηλεκτρισμένα όργανα.
             

Έχουν επίσης τελειοποιήσει τις συμφωνικές τους ευαισθησίες, όπως φαίνεται στα αριστουργήματα

μεγάλης διάρκειας, "Aound the Fire" και στη 18λεπτη "The Finest of Miracles Suite". Έχουν επίσης πολύ πιο ομοιόμορφο ρυθμό, εξαλείφοντας την περιστασιακή τάση που είχαν προηγουμένως να παρακάνουν ή να πλημμυρίσουν περάσματα με πάρα πολλές πληροφορίες.
                      

Η διαφορετικότητα είναι ένα κεντρικό χαρακτηριστικό που πρέπει να δοθεί στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ των

Ciccada. Το θεμέλιο του στυλ τους είναι το progressive folk rock, αλλά με λεπτομέρειες και εξορμήσεις από την τζαζ, την παραδοσιακή λαϊκή μουσική και το συμφωνικό progressive rock ενσωματωμένα στο σύνολο, μαζί με στοιχεία που θα μπορούσε κανείς να περιγράψει ως chamber rock to boot (δεν πρέπει να συγχέεται με το RIO).
                    

Ένα καλοφτιαγμένο άλμπουμ σε όλα τα επίπεδα, και παρόλο που δεν είναι τόσο προκλητικό όσο

μπορεί να ακούγεται από την περιγραφή, η συνολική παραγωγή αξίζει αυτή την περιγραφή λόγω της τεράστιας ποικιλομορφίας του υλικού. There is just no way that this can be the third album from a Greek band, as surely this is a long-lost British act from the early/mid Seventies. I mean, the obvious reference points straight out of the

hat are Gryphon and Gentle Giant, they don't get more British than that, with some elements of Renaissance, Tull, Hatfield, but never a whiff of Vangelis or Aphrodite's Child! I just made a quick check over to ProgArchives to see what the most highly rated Greek progressive album of all time is, and I was somewhat surprised to see that it is actually this one! I really thought it would be '666', but rather aptly that is currently at #6 on the list. The music of CICCADA is heavily rooted in folk music; it's complex, compelling, borrowing influneces from many other spheres of progressive rock or more. This band is highly recommended.
                                          

This band is hailing from Greece, known for delivering a sophisticated blend of folk, psychedelia and art rock since some time. Their albums all were released with a lapse of five years approximately. That means space enough to accurately prepare the ground in every case. 'Harvest' appears as their third

one, this time distributed through the acclaimed Bad Elephant Music label. It is quite usual, a rather extensive staff is listed in the liner notes, where the band constants right from the beginning are Yorgos Mouhos (guitars) and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Nikolopoulos. Both are also responsible for the compositions and arrangements. And not to forget Evangelia Kozoni of course. She is providing her mellow folk tinged singing (and reciting) voice with bravura again. On this occasion within a duo quasi, also having second female lead vocalist Dimi Spela on her side.
                           

1. "Eniania (Keepers of the Midnight Harvest)" (7:25) folk electric guitar with Mellotron flute--which is so interesting knowing what a FINE flute player they have in Nicolas Nikolopoulos). I love the whole-band choral entrance over the guitar--it sounds so pagan! Gorgeous! The band then flips on the

instrumental switch in between the first two choral passages. At 3:15 the guitarist doubles the speed of his arpeggiated lines as a jazzy support ensemble kick into a sax and flute-led section. A minute later the lead instruments switch to jazz electric guitar, organ, and synth, then they trade back to the flute and saxes for the sixth minute before turning quite cinematic. The whole-band weave over the final two minutes is nothing less than astonishing--so much to listen to--all so idiosyncratic and worthy of individual attention. The final minute sees the main choral theme carried forward by recorders and organ over a militaristic style distant snare drumming. Wow! What an opener! We have really missed you, Ciccada!
                       

2. "Open Wings" (5:28) pure Ciccada Prog Folk in the Jethro Tull tradition. The lead vocals are much

smoother, less operatic (Dimi's work?) and the production a little more modern (a little tighter, more intimate to the listener). Awesome guitar work--on many instruments--by Yorgos Mouhos. A wonderfully engineered, many-layered and intricately-woven construct.
                            

3. "The Old Man and the Butterfly" (7:52) a little heavier prog here, still folkie, but with Yorgos

taking the lead vocal! Perhaps more reminiscent of early Prog Folk rockers like SPIROGYRA or even Samla Mammas Manna (in sound, not humor and quirk)--and even some of the more flower-power happy Canterbury artists (like KHAN or today's MAGIC BUS). A non-instrumental song by Ciccada that is not led by Evangelia's voice: something I never imagined! But it's great! A top three song, to be sure!
                                        

4. "No Man's Land" (8:40) a return to the more-British school of Prog Folk--a little Jethro Tull, a little STRAWBS, even a little Pink Floyd and Renaissance--before Evangelia enters with her

immaculate, uncorrupt voice. Again, I wish to point out the incredible detail and compositional skill that this band puts into each and every instrumental line of their very complex weaves; it's like watching the Bruges masters of tapestry at work! No line is rote or lame, all functioning to give more life to the whole. And a totally fresh sound and style for Ciccada to explore--and they do it so well! A top three song for me.
                               

5. "Who's to Decide?" (4:40) more jazz-tinged (though definitely still very much shaped by their

regional and, probably, local influences), this song has a lot of similarities to some of the more dark, psychedelic musics of the RPI masterpieces from the early 1970s. As well-performed and composed as the previous songs but just not my cup of tea (as BIGLIETTO PER L'INFERNO, OSANNA, MUSEO ROSENBACH, and even some LE ORME and BANCO are not to my tastes).
                                 

6. "Queen of Wishes" (12:39) This one seems to have more foundations in classically-influence folk traditions, with lots of hard lines in transitions despite the exploration of some wonderfully diverse and

dynamic range. This is a song that I grew to love more with my third and fourth listens. Such an unique and eclectic expression of old prog styles: I hear tinges of Anthony Phillips, Gryphon, England, Genesis, Renaissance, Mike Oldfield, early Gentle Giant, Goblin, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, and yet it's all fresh, all perfect. The only place it might have some minor deficiencies is in the melody department. My final top three song.
                       

Five stars; A certifiable masterpiece of sophisticated Prog Folk and definitely an album that

keeps giving every time you listen to it--and will, I'm sure, keep giving for years to come. Methinks we are very privileged to be able to hear their work--and to have it preserved for all-time in these recorded albums.

[Μέσα από τον ιμπρεσιονιστικό υπέροχο πίνακα τού Αργεντίνου Pablo Solar (Viña), τα δικά μας παιδιά, οι CICCADA απλώνουν σήμερα στο τραπέζι μας όλα αυτά που για χρόνια φρόντιζαν και

καλλιεργούσαν. Κόποι χρόνων που ρόζιασαν τα χέρια τους στις πρόβες και στο “πάμε παιδιά πάλι, δεν είναι ακόμα αρκετό”. Κόποι που ξεπέρασαν τα χρονικά όρια μιας συνάντησης, μιας ηχογράφησης, μιας τελειότητας. Τρίτο άλμπουμ σήμερα με τίτλο "Harvest" . Σε μια εποχή που δείχνει να έχει βυθίσει για τα καλά την διάθεση τού κόσμου, τα παιδιά αυτά από την Αθήνα, βγάζουν από αυτό το λασπωμένο χώμα καρπούς ώριμους. Η βρετανική δισκογραφική εταιρία Bad Elephant Music ανοίγει τις πόρτες τις στους CICCADA, και το επταμελές σχήμα με τη σειρά του, έρχεται να εντυπωσιάσει όχι μόνο την ελληνική προοδευτική σκηνή αλλά και ακόμα παραπέρα.
               

Μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα συνέντευξη (και αποκλειστική φωτογράφιση) παραχωρήθηκε στον Χρήστο Κισατζεκιάν για το “Άβαλον Των Τεχνών”, που αξίζει να σκαλίσετε. Για την αρχή τους, τις ιδέες τους, τα μελλοντικά τους σχέδια, όπως επίσης ξεδιπλώνουν τις γνώσεις, τις εμπειρίες και τις επιρροές τους.

Από τους γνωστούς και πολυαναφερόμενους, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, μέχρι τους Gryphon και τους Van Der Graaf Generator. Και σίγουρα η αναφορά είναι ενδεικτική, γιατί πόσες ακόμα μικρές ή μεγάλες επιρροές κρύβονται πίσω από το εκπληκτικό (τολμώ να γράψω) "Harvest", να μην μάθουμε και ποτέ. Η αλήθεια βρίσκεται κάπου μεταξύ των μουσικών γνώσεων του σχήματος, των αναγνωστών / ακροατών και της μεγαλοπρεπούς δεκαετίας τού ΄70, που αν μη τι άλλο έδωσε (και ακόμα δίνει) καρπούς από μια ουσιαστική, πρωτοφανή και μοναδική μουσική επανάσταση. Και δεν στέκουν μόνο εκεί. Μουσικές θύμησες ακόμα από πιο πίσω έρχονται. Από τον Μεσαίωνα μέχρι και την Αναγέννηση, και όλες αυτές οι διαδρομές σε έναν πολυμορφικό μουσικό χορό.
                            

Βέβαια ακούγοντας το άλμπουμ ξανά και ξανά (δεν μπορείς να το ακούσεις μόνο μια φορά!) και όλων μου των χρόνων οι μουσικές διαδρομές με έστειλαν πίσω στα μαγευτικά φωνητικά τής Joni Mitchell

και εκείνα τής (μεγάλης μου αδυναμίας) Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention – Strawbs). Γιατί για τέτοια αιθέρια γυναικεία φωνητικά μιλάμε κι εδώ. Μουσικές που με οδήγησαν επίσης στους Pentangle και στην Jacqui McShee, κάπου στο σήμερα στους Φιλανδούς Onségen Ensemble με τους πνευστούς jazzie πειραματισμούς τους και στους Βρετανούς Edensong. Οπότε δεν είναι και καθόλου δύσκολο να καταλάβετε γιατί οι CICCADA έγιναν μια από τις αδυναμίες μου.
                        

Μια πληθώρα μουσικών οργάνων σπέρνει στη κυριολεξία ήχους και αρμονίες άλλων εποχών μέχρι και

Από την παράδοση στην jazz και από την κλασσική στη rock. Κοιτώντας στο line up και βλέποντας όλα τα μουσικά όργανα που έχουν στολίσει το "Harvest", μόνο αδιάφορο δεν μπορούν να σε αφήσουν.
