Post-punk/funk pioneers Medium Medium have reformed. Best known for "Hungry, So Angry," the 1981 dance club hit that paved the way for the current new wave of early 1980s-influenced bands, Medium Medium is working to put together a series of special reunion shows before the end of 2004

Formed in Nottingham, England just one year after the Sex Pistols' last show, Medium Medium's self-styled "extreme dance music" and "searing Zen funk" merged dance rhythms and staccato guitar with squawking sax and found sounds to create a "free-blown dubbed-up white funk" (NME) that positioned the band "at the forefront of the post punk funk movement" (Cashbox).

In February 1981, Medium Medium signed to Cherry Red and released "Hungry, So Angry," the band's second single. Dave Henderson (Sound International) wrote prophetically, "It could be one of the most important records of the type to emerge this year and will doubtlessly be revered as a classic after the group have long since departed." At the end of the year, influential music critic Robert Christgau (Village Voice) included "Hungry, So Angry" in his "Dean's List" of top singles for 1981.

The band released one studio album, The Glitterhouse, in late 1981. Its stark, stripped-down dub and dance rhythms and chiming, funk guitar with occasional saxophone and other sounds, failed to attract a large following.

John Rees Lewis, the lead singer and saxophone player, left at the start of 1982 to form C Cat Trance with the original drummer Nigel Stone, who had left shortly before the release of "Hungry, So Angry". The remaining members, Andy Ryder (guitar/vocals), Alan Turton (bass guitar), Graham Spink (offstage special sounds) and the replacement drummer Steve Harvey, continued to tour and were later augmented by, first, Leslie Joachim Barrett (guitar/keyboards), then Julie Wood (keyboards). Forays into a fuller, more produced sound failed to earn the band a new record deal and Medium Medium split up in late 1983.

Inspired by a Cherry Red retrospective CD release in 2001 and the subsequent dance-punk revival, Medium Medium reformed in late 2004 for several live shows, including a showcase at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. No longer a full-time venture, the band has stated plans to continue to write, record and perform.

Η Αληθινή Δημοκρατία των Steel Pulse

Καλωσορίζουμε την νέα χρονιά με την Αληθινή Δημοκρατία των Steel Pulse!

review
by Rick Anderson [allmusic]
Although the group's first three albums are generally considered their finest, there is a very strong case to be made for including Steel Pulse's Elektra debut in their core collection as well. Where Reggae Fever had found the band moving from hardcore Rasta politics into lover's rock and party anthems, True Democracy marks a return to more ideological subject matter; the cover art, which shows singer David Hinds reading the Bible to his rapt bandmates, is a dead giveaway. Their sound might be a little bit slicker than before, but it's also harder and the lyrics less compromising -- "Leggo Beast" denounces adultery over a stripped-down one-drop beat; "Man No Sober" inveighs against drunkenness; "A Who Responsible?" uses a dour trombone line to call down judgment on Babylon. But the mood is lightened somewhat by "Your House," a gorgeous love song, and by the exalted "Chant a Psalm." This is one of Steel Pulse's most satisfying and fully realized albums.

True Democracy is a roots reggae album released by Steel Pulse in May 1982. The album was recorded over 25 days in Denmark, with legendary reggae producer Karl Pitterson.

While True Democracy does see Steel Pulse return somewhat to their political roots of Handsworth Revolution and Tribute to the Martyrs, it is also more light-hearted in the vein of Reggae Fever (Caught You).

True Democracy peak at #120 on Billboard's Top Pop Albums chart in 1982.[wiki]

From allmusic :

Recorded in Hawaii between Banshees activities, Feast lives up to its surroundings -- at least the way most people want to imagine it -- as a lush, tropical experience. Almost a tribute to the exotica of acts like Martin Denny but well before the cloying rush of mid-'90s hype around such items, Feast is just that, a chance for the duo to marry Sioux's often cutting lyrics to a different musical brew. Waves crashing on beaches, found-sound effects from nature, and on three cuts the backing vocals of a hula academy's chanters add to the dreamy, mysterious flow of the album.Longtime Banshees producer Mike Hedges assists once again with the proceedings, helping to carry over the dark undertow of the main group to the duo's work here. Budgie varies the more frenetic drum assaults found on Wild Things in favor of a variety of speeds and tempos, but always with a crackling energy, whether low-key and tense or more outwardly rollicking. Sioux's singing succeeds as well as her work in the Banshees, her strong, instantly recognizable voice and lyrics often draped with a gentle reverb that increases the hazy, narcotic feeling of the album. "Miss the Girl," the concise number chosen as a single from the album, has a brisk, catchy feeling to it that avoids straightforward pop for the Creatures' own stripped-down, unexpected approach. Other strong cuts are "Dancing on Glass," a shuddering combination of drum and handclaps that achieves an almost ritualistic groove; the playful, gentler "Gecko"; and "A Strutting Rooster," a strong, rumbling number with one of Sioux's best performances. The backing choir gets an individual chance to shine on "Inoa'Ole," their interwoven voices blending into evocative drones and whines as well as Budgie's slow, forceful percussion and Sioux's own wordless chants.

Positive Noise were a New Wave and Synthpop band from Scotland who had a number of indie hits in the 1980s. They released three albums and several singles and were together for over five years. The band was formed in 1979 by Ross Middleton (vocals), his brothers Graham Middleton (keyboards, vocals) and Fraser Middleton (bass guitar, vocals), Russell Blackstock (guitar, vocals), and Les Gaff (drums).Their first released material was two tracks ("Refugees" and "The Long March") on the Statik label compilation album Second City Statik in 1980, and they followed this with two singles on Statik in 1981, both of which were top-ten hits on the UK Independent Chart.Debut album Heart of Darkness (listen it here)  was released in May 1981, after which Ross left to form the short-lived Leisure Process, with Blackstock taking over on lead vocals. Heart of Darkness peaked at number four on the independent chart, and the band's second album, Change of Heart (1982), also charted, reaching number 21. They released a third and final album, Distant Fires, in 1985, now with John Telford on drums and John Coletta on guitar, but their earlier success was not repeated and they split up shortly afterwards.

Albums
Heart of Darkness (1981) [came with a bonus 7-inch single: "Love Like Property"]
The Greek edition [STAT 3101] include ''Charm'' as a bonus track.
Change of Heart (1982)
Distant Fires (1985)

For Change of Heart, guitarist Russell Blackstock also assumed the vocal chores, and Positive Noise transmuted into a slick electronic dance machine, churning out precise rhythms with anxious, semi-melodic vocals. Gone is the audio clumsiness and uncertain footing of the first LP; Positive Noise's niche is definitely in club music.[www.trouserpress.com]

(FROM SLEEVE NOTES TO DOJO 'BEST OF')
One of the classic mid-80s underground bands - seemingly every fanzine of the day carried an interview with them - The Three Johns opted for humour and political belligerence at a time when all around them were intent on making their guitars jangle and handing out jelly babies to audiences dressed in anoraks.
Imaginatively enough, The Three Johns were So called because they comprised three Johns - Messrs Hyatt (vocals), Langford (guitar) and Brennan (bass). Formed on Royal Wedding Day in 1981 as a collective of Leeds-based students, their career began With a run of fine 7-inch singles, two of which '- AWOL' and 'Brain Box' ...

. . . . .    'Death Of The European' was actually a vicious attack on the American destruction of European culture while 'Sold Down The River' summed up the mood of resignation which followed Thatcherism's triumphs of the mid-80s. Both confirmed The Three Johns had musical deftness which belied their perceived on-stage daftness.
...  How good were The Three Johns? In their early days Alan McGhee of Creation Records was desperate to book them for his club (believe it or not) the Three Johns pub in Islington. Think what he could have done with Three Johns instead of just two Gallaghers.

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN
---------------------

Big mouth, open wide, open up those pearly gates of freedom

He's got a snapshot
Flash-light at Checkpoint Charlie
Among the searchlights
A balloon idea floats from his brain
The bubble bursts on his face

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He's in the back seat Multiplication sex drive
he's the receiver he's in credit, he's alive
He is happy. He's alive.

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He is the dead-beat walkman
Of Rock and Roll on the frontier
Listen out for something
American Forces Radio
He's on the late, late Alimony show

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

And now here's twelve year old Tracy With her poem about George Washington:
George Washington was the first
Great American President
And we honour him
And respect him
And we follow in the true American way

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

He rides the lightning
is snoring drowns the thunder
Finds his dreams frightening
He won't go under he's alive
Wake up tomorrow he'll be fine

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

Strange figure standing like a monument
in robes of old graffiti barbed wire halo
pushed down on his brow

Temple of pain shaved his head into the euro U.S.crop
tatoo (potsdam strasse mad stop)
stands like a stone like a statue like a monument
kiss the skull

DEATH OF THE EUROPEAN

Who am I working for?
I don't know which one to think.
Who am I working for these days?

Evolving out of Bristol's the Pop Group, Rip Rig And Panic was formed in 1981 as a conceptual musicians' collective, taking its name from an album by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The group's prime movers were multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Gareth Sager, jazz trumpeter Don Cherry's step-daughter Neneh Cherry (b. Neneh Mariann Karlsson, 10 March 1964, Stockholm, Sweden; vocals), Cherry's partner and drummer Bruce Smith, Sean Oliver (d. March 1990; bass) and Mark Springer (piano). Powerful and disturbing live, their playful, anarchic jazz-funk was well captured on the irreverent 1981 debut album God, which appeared as two 45 rpm discs, but was too radical for daytime airplay or significant sales. They performed at the first WOMAD festival in 1982 shortly before Cherry returned to Sweden to have her first baby. Sean Oliver's sister Andrea temporarily took over vocals, and Louis Moholo joined on drums. The equally experimental second album, I Am Cold, appeared in 1982, followed by the more accessible Attitude in 1983. Unwilling to compromise further, but feeling the strain of constant innovation, they split in 1985, only to realign as the smaller outfit Float Up CP, and, briefly, God Mother And Country, before Cherry went on to a successful solo career, with Andrea Oliver contributing to some of her songs. Sean Oliver, who went on to co-write Terence Trent D'Arby's Wishing Well (The Cool In The Shade Mix), died of sickle-cell anaemia in 1990. Sager formed Head, while Springer released a solo album before going on to work on film and television soundtracks. He returned to solo recording with 1998's Eye.[discogs]

The early eighties saw the emergence of the electronic/dance phenomenon in Europe. At the forefront of this movement were four names: Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League, The Normal, and Fad Gadget (Frank Tovey). Tovey released his first single Back to Nature in 1979 and was the first signing to Daniel Millers Mute label. Miller (as The Normal) had previously put out his own composition T.V.O.D. c/w Warm Leatherette and was thinking of starting a label when he met Tovey. As Fad Gadget Tovey played solo with a drum machine and synthesizer confusing audiences at the time used to the standard rock format. Now, obviously, the scene is radically different with electronic sounds and beat boxes being the norm.
His name is quoted by Depeche Mode and Erasures Vince Clark as a major inspiration and the influence of Tovey's early experiments in electronic music can be heard in the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, New Order and all the Techno/Dance Bands of the 90s. The main characteristic of Tovey's work that distinguished him from his contempories and his followers was the quality of his lyrics. Not satisfied with singing pseudo science fiction (a la Gary Numan) or crass love songs, Tovey developed a style more akin to Dylan or Lou Reed, his black humour often confusing the punters at the time more interested in style than content.

His songs 'spoke of the diseases and fears poorly hidden from view. They spoke for and against the little man, the ubiquitous civilian bewildered by the speed of events threatening to sweep him up or leave him behind. And they spoke in a variety of voices: dead pan, severe, sardonic, satirical and, finally, disarmingly sincere....

The Astronauts - Peter Pan Hits The Suburbs (La Vida Es Un Mus) Reissue on Vinyl LP

*OUT NOW * Reissue on Vinyl LP
MUS44 THE ASTRONAUTS - Peter Pan Hits the Suburbs LP

Reissue of this long lost masterpice from 1981 originally released by Bulge / Genius records. The Astronauts were (and are, after close to 30 years and a history of lineup shifts only bested by The Fall) the definitive psych-punk ensemble, though even that title doesn't do 'em justice. Their sound culminates the post '77 punk dabblings of head forbears Twink (his 'Do it 77' single and The Rings' 'I wanna be free' platter), Nik Turner (the outstanding Inner City Unit and the 'punkier' late 70's bits of Hawkwind) and Daevid Allen's planet Gong (with fellow acid-punkers Here and Now) all woven in with an earlier Robert Wyatt / mellow candle-y psych folk vibe... While not sounding like any of those things at all. Get it? The album's range is gigantic: from dissonant punk a la Fall ('Everything stops for baby'), to epic progressive folk ('Protest song', 'Baby sings folk songs'), ditties ('Sod us'), hard-rock ('The Traveller'), pop ('How green was my valley'), garage / surf ('Still Talking'), industrial ('How long is a piece of string'), and set to arrangements that employ synths, flute, saxophone, and strays into progressive or even free-form / psychedelic sections. The icing on the cake is the mature statement of the lyrics, a cynical and bitter exploration of the lives of simple men, miles away from the generic horror / punk overtones that permeated most of alternative albums at the time.

Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen Single [1982]

"Come On Eileen" was a single released by Dexy's Midnight Runners in 1982. The song was written by Kevin Rowland, "Big" Jim Paterson, and Billy Adams; it was produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. It originally appeared on the album Too-Rye-Ay. It was their first #1 hit in the United Kingdom since 1980's "Geno".
The song won Best British Single at the 1983 Brit Awards.

The song begins with Celtic-style fiddle played over a drum beat, with the bass guitar and piano providing accompaniment. An extended version has an additional intro of a Celtic fiddle solo, playing Thomas Moore's Irish folk song Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms.
The chorus was loosely inspired by the song "A Man Like Me" by the 1960s British soul group Jimmy James and the Vagabonds.
In the British charts, the song spent four weeks at number one in August 1982. This success was repeated around the globe; spending five weeks as the Kent Report's number one in Australia and reaching number one in April 1983 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

The song reached #18 on VH1's Top 100 Songs of the 1980s.
The song was named #1 on VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.

Japan : Oil On Canvas 1983

Japan were a British New Wave group, formed in 1974 in Catford, South London. The band achieved success in the late 1970s/early 1980s, when they were often associated with the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement.

The band debuted on record with the 1978 album " Adolescent Sex " and followed up with " Obscure Alternatives " . Both albums sold well in Japan (where the band's name helped them to gain a devoted cult following) and the Netherlands , where the single "Adolescent Sex" was a Top 30 hit . They also gained some popularity in Canada.
However in their native UK those albums were largely ignored.

Oil on Canvas is a live album released in 1983 by Virgin Records. Although it is a live recording of their established material, the album also contains three new studio tracks ("Oil on Canvas", "Voices Raised in Welcome, Hands Held in Prayer" and "Temple of Dawn"), recorded separately by Sylvian, Sylvian/Jansen and Barbieri respectively. (The name of Barbieri's track is taken from the novel The Temple of Dawn by the acclaimed Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima.)

Although the album was released some months following the band's much publicised split in late 1982, it was ironically Japan's highest charting album in the UK (where it reached #5). The album was certified "Gold" by the BPI in 1988 for 100,000 copies sold.

Theatre of Hate were a post-punk band formed in Britain in 1980. Led by singer-songwriter and ex-member of punk band The Pack, Kirk Brandon, the original group also consisted of: guitarist Steve Guthrie, bassist Stan Stammers (The Straps/Epileptics), saxophonist John Lennard and drummer Luke Rendle from Crisis/The Straps. In 1980, the Pack had evolved into Theatre of Hate, with Luke Rendle replacing Walker on drums, Stan Stammers joining on bass, Steve Guthrie on guitar and John 'Boy' Lennard on sax (the Werners joined the Straps, who Stammers had previously played for). The first Theatre of Hate release was the "Original Sin" single in November 1980, which reached #5 on the UK Indie Chart. Theatre of Hate garnered much early attention as a live act and made their album debut in 1981 with the concert LP He Who Dares Wins Live at the Warehouse Leeds. Shortly after the album's release however, Steve Guthrie left the band. Another concert recording, Live at the Lyceum followed, and in August 1981 Theatre of Hate entered the studio with producer Mick Jones of The Clash to record their first non-live album debut, Westworld, which was released on February 19 1982 and went on to reach the UK Top 20. Shortly after the album was recorded new guitarist Billy Duffy (formerly of The Nosebleeds) joined the band and a little later drummer Luke Rendle was replaced by Nigel Preston. The album reached #17 in the UK Albums Chart, and also spawned the Top 40 single "Do You Believe in the Westworld". In February 1982, Theatre of Hate released another live album entitled He Who Dares Wins: Live in Berlin recorded in September 1981, and in April 1982 Billy Duffy left the band to join Death Cult, the band continuing for a short time before splitting up later that year. Demos for the unreleased second studio album were released as Ten Years After in 1993. Brandon went on to front Spear of Destiny with bassist Stammers. A post break-up compilation album Revolution spent three weeks in the UK Albums Chart, peaking at #67. In 1991 Theatre of Hate reformed for the Return to 8 tour which included some of the original band members, these included Brandon, Stammers and Lennard, with the addition of Pete Barnacle on drums and Mark 'Gemini' Thwaite on guitar. In July/August 1994 Brandon, Stammers, John McNutt and Art Smith went into Mix-O. Lydian Studio, Boonton, New Jersey with Brad Morrision to record a new album under the Theatre of Hate banner. Retribution was not released until early 1996 in both the U.S. and UK. To coincide with Westworld's 25th anniversary, Theatre of Hate reformed for a week-long tour culminating at the Carling Academy Islington on 29 April 2007. Of the original line-up, only Stammers was unavailable, due to conflicting schedules and family commitments in the U.S. where he now lives. Replacing him was Craig Adams, former bassist with The Cult, The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission, joining Brandon, Guthrie, Lennard, and Rendle for the reunion. If I Die, I Die is the Virgin Prunes' proper debut album. The first three (of seven) parts of a conceptual work entitled A New Form of Beauty, issued as 7", 10", and 12" singles preceded it in the same calendar year. Produced by Wire's Colin Newman, the album's 14 tracks are the epitome of post-punk adventurism. Here, tribal drums and edgy, spooky, detuned guitars and bouzoukis cross paths and meld with synthesizers and primitive drum machines in an onslaught of off-kilter creativity where everyone from the Fall, PIL, New Order, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and even Bruce Springsteen are called in for reference in a brew that is dangerous, primal, and excessive. Two androgynous frontmen in the foppish Gavin Friday and alluring Guggi create alternate ambiences from warped yet sweet Irish balladry to shrieked poetry. And while the set is messy to be sure, it is far from off-putting. In fact, it is easily the band's most consistent and enduring effort. The albums opens with the haunting, nocturnal minimalism of "Ulakanakulot," an intro with tom toms and drifting keyboards layered carefully in the background, wordless chanted backing vocals and an electric bouzouki courtesy of guitarist Dik. It immediately gives way to its antecedent "Decline and Fall." It's the same tune, only Friday is out in front of it digging deep into the temporality of childhood and what remains of it. Its effect is startling, nocturnal, and tense. In "Sweethome Under White Clouds," the theme is given dimension as Guggi and Friday wail like muzzeins over a reverbed guitar coming from the netherworld

and augmented by a soprano saxophone and a synth bassline. "Pagan Lovesong," the album's proper single, is one of the most angular cuts on the set. Here, the Prunes employ a riff straight out of early Gang of Four, chant their refrains, and swirl the keyboards and drum machines a la Devo yet keep everything so gothic and strange; it's not only compelling, it's infectious. The rest of the album follows suit, with the raucous new wave of "Baby Turns Blue," and the mainstream rockist "Ballad of the Man" that sounds like a wrong-speed outtake, Springsteen's The River and the Mott the Hoople version of "Sweet Jane!" This is a wonderfully confounding and sometimes campy and often disturbing exercise in unfettered creativity that has stood the test of time very well. It is the most necessary Virgin Prunes record of all and captures best what they were capable of when focused. ~ Thom Jurek

 Ulakanakulot/Decline And Fall Lyrics

See the children play by
Running try to touch the sky
When one falls you hear a cry
“You’re dead, you’re dead, you must die”
“Take a dream and fly away” she will call
They will wait for you not I, see me crawl
And sometimes I feel so old
I never smile nor do cry
Shadows flicker from above
“Seeker save your soul” she said
She will fly, she will fly
He will wait far away
A golden key to open the door
Behind which the answer lies
You sinned in dreams
Now awake in deeper, deeper dreams
“Take a dream and fly away” she will call
They won’t wait for you not I,
they will wait for you not I
See me crawl, she will fly far away.
Decline and fall…
Never return…
Die…
Die…

Public Image Ltd - This Is Not A Love Song [single]

This Is Not A Love Song

During this interim period, the band released the single This Is Not A Love Song in 1983, the song's lyric lampooning the ire from some fans and the music press over the band's movement towards a more commercial style - the song's title inspired by a line in the song "Her Story" (1979) by Virgin label stablemates the Flying Lizards) about bands 'selling out' their artistic principles for commercial success ("But you can still make money, by singing sweet songs of love...this is a love song"). Ironically, it gave the band their biggest international hit single, reaching No.5 in the UK singles charts and No.12 in the Netherlands.

A re-recorded version with harsher vocals and a brass section was included for the album This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get. [wiki]

Here is Oil & Gold

Shriekback was originally formed in 1981 by Barry Andrews, and Dave Allen, expanding to a trio with the addition of Carl Marsh. They enjoyed some success on the dance chart on their original Y Records label, and had a string of hits on the UK Indie Chart, and their debut album, Care (1983) was picked up by Warners in the United States. They left Y for Arista Records for 1984's Jam Science, also recruiting drummer Martyn Baker. The album reached number 85 on the UK Albums Chart, and the single, "Hand on my Heart" charted in the Top 60 in the UK.
Finding little success, they switched to Island Records for the 1985 album Oil & Gold; Marsh left during the recording of the album, to be replaced by Mike Cozzi. After the follow-up, Big Night Music, Allen left to rejoin Gang of Four, and Shriekback remained a collaborative centred around Andrews. Allen would also go on to play in King Swamp and The Elastic Purejoy. Marsh was also in the band, Happyhead.
After a further album in 1988, Go Bang!, the band split up. Andrews continued working on other projects before re-forming Shriekback in 1992, although after the single "The Bastard Sons of Enoch" and album Sacred City, there would be no further releases until 2000's Naked Apes & Pond Life album.
Both Allen and Marsh returned to the studio to contribute to the recording of Shriekback's 2003 release, Having a Moment. Since Having a Moment Andrews has recorded two albums for Malicious Damage (Killing Joke's original label) under the Shriekback moniker. Film director Michael Mann, was a fan of Shriekback, and used several of their songs in his films Manhunter and Band of the Hand.

Hammerheads

Our time has come
age of the hammerhead
This is our mission
to be the Daleks of god
Too late for silence
too late for anything
It's all too much for me
it's roots go down too deep for me

A punishing fire, an animal frenzy
These hammerhead people
know what danger is for
You let them in and now they're everywhere
If it's mineral or vegetable it's back a little up a little

Shout push hammerheads bold and resolute
Marching balancing in too far to go back
Yes yes hammerheads swimming kissing
We are big and clever and we don't know anything
Your vocation by immersion in our filthy demon seed
We know the only things you like are paranoid sex and childish greed
Our own worst enemies they hollowed us out of wood
Look at the beasts inside us gonna get us this time but good
Whether we pull it out or push it it in all ends up the same
You know a hammerhead is a hammerhead by any other name

Shout push hammerheads,
Bold and resolute,
Marching balancing in too far to go
Yes yes hammerheads!!
Swimming kissing we are big and clever and we don't know anything
Onwards hammerheads bright and dangerous
Jumping running in the field and factory
God save hammerheads keeping going
We are sleek and special and we're sure of something

(Chorus 2 - spoken)
Blessed are the airmen
Blessed are the shit kickers
Blessed are the jackhammers
Blessed is the big damage
Blessed are the faith healers
Blessed are the moon walkers
Blessed are the snake people
Blessed are the heat seekers

THIS BIG HUSH

Is there a fire in the sky?
Is there a moon up there?
Is anything alive now?
This darkness is what I hear

This is a breathless silence
A moment out of time
I see your face in the shadows
The tell-tale signs are in your eyes

More than I can hold in my hand
Running through the gaps like water
Aching with a passion inside
Deep as the river

All desire
The ashes and the fire
Turning this night inside
And the light from you

Is there a flame in the dark
Is there a bright heart star
There creatures look the same now
We freeze wherever we are

We wake alone in the blackness
We sleep wherever we fall
One dream all around us
This big hush infects us all

Holding up an animal fear
Soaking up the waves underwater
Tuned to music no one can hear
Forever in this half-light

All desire
The ashes and the fire
Turning this night inside
And the light from you

All desire
The ashes and the fire
Turning this night inside
And the light from you

More than I can hold in my hand
Running through the gaps like water
Aching with a passion inside
Deep as the river

Tom Robinson - North By Northwest [1982] & War Baby EP [1983]

Tom Robinson (born 1 June 1950) is an English singer/songwriter and broadcaster probably best-known for the UK hit songs "Glad to be Gay" (1976), "2-4-6-8 Motorway" (1977), "Don't Take No for an Answer" (1978) and "War Baby" (1983).
Robinson was the founding member of the Tom Robinson Band (TRB), an overtly political band with several hits in the 1970s.
Later in the 1980s, Robinson fronted and bankrolled Sector 27, a less political rock band which released one album - produced by Steve Lillywhite - and left Robinson virtually bankrupt. He fled to Hamburg to escape his creditors. There, he penned his 1983 hit "War Baby" and recorded his first solo album North By Northwest with producer Richard Mazda. [wikipedia]

The first TR solo album: sparse, minimal and produced by Richard Mazda in Hamburg, Jan/Feb 1982. It includes an early version of 'Atmospherics: Listen to the Radio' and 'Merrily Up On High' - both cowritten with Peter Gabriel.
http://www.tomrobinson.com/

Robinson looks like a slightly dazed everyman on the cover of North by Northwest, his first solo album, but the tunes, many co-written with Peter Gabriel, are uniformly strong. Recorded in Hamburg with only producer Richard Mazda and a drummer, North by Northwest is a mature and subtle album of various sophisticated settings, marred only by an agonized (and agonizing) song of love lost, "Now Martin's Gone." The music is dark and moody, with synth-heavy arrangements, but it has a low-key charm that's more personal than political, lightened by danceable new wave and reggae beats. "Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)" is one of the gloomiest rock tunes ever written, and another Robinson classic.
Having lost his appeal for the record industry, Robinson recorded and released "War Baby," a number that sounds like a Steely Dan outtake, on his own. It became a major British hit in 1983, and revitalized his career. [http://trouserpress.com]
