Brian Eno: Box II - Vocal (3 CD 1993)

Virgin repackaged and re-released three of Brian Eno's best albums -- Here Come the Warm Jets, Another Green World, Before & After Science -- as a slip-cased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire

the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging or remastering, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors.  “Eno Box II: Vocal” presents a handy guide to map Brian Eno’s metamorphosis from little-known sideman (he played synthesizer briefly in the 1970s with the art rock band Roxy Music) to mixer-slash-muse for the stars. That it focuses on songs with lyrics also makes this set far more accessible than the ambient and ambitious challenges of triumphs like “Music for Airports.”

That said, disc one is wildly divergent. As Eno struggles to find his voice, he tries inventive synth-driven pieces like “Here Comes the Warm Jets” (which hints at those free-form joys to come), then the

riffy, guitar-heavy “Seven Deadly Finns.” That’s why the next two discs point more definitively to where his quickly evolving vision would go. The music bed is funky, yet musically diverse. Songs like “Skysaw” are, it’s clear now, seedlings from which many-limbed innovations would grow. By the time Eno produces 1977’s “King’s Lead Hat,” we have the prescription for a band called the Talking Heads, including the herky-jerky vocal, bone-deep groove and intelligent hook.

Eno’s prescient work in ambient music, which arguably spawned an entire format, is represented on tracks like “In Dark Trees” (embedded below) and successive tunes from his “Before and After

Science” release. “R.A.F.,” from the final disc, is revelatory. Energized, even turgid, it suggests to me the toughness he would bring to work with U2 later. Then, somehow, that’s topped by three consecutive tracks from Eno’s legend-making collaboration with the Heads’ David Byrne, “My Life in the Bush with Ghosts.” Their squelchy epiphanies would eventually become too many to mention, from their duo recording of “The Jezebel Spirit” (heard here) to titanic grooves like “Crosseyed and Painless” from Byrne and his band.

Next on “Eno Box II: Vocals,” which is presented chronologically, are two from 1992’s “Nerve Net,” a

record I always thought of as a kind of absolution for dance music. Eno takes a genre that tends to consume itself and constructs tunes that are thoughtful, yet very unselfconscious. Also of note: Collaborations on discs two and three with the Velvet Underground’s John Cale and plenty of never-before-heard items from the vault.

Brian Eno: Box Set I - Instrumental (3 CD) 1993

Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno RDI (born Brian Peter George Eno, 15 May

1948) is a British musician, composer, record producer and visual artist best known for his contributions to ambient music and work in rock, pop and electronica. A self-described "non-musician", Eno has helped introduce unconventional concepts and approaches to contemporary music. He has been described as one of popular music's most influential and innovative figures. In 2019, Eno was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Roxy Music.

ROXY  MUSIC

Born in Suffolk, Eno studied painting and experimental music at the art school of Ipswich Civic

College in the mid 1960s, and then at Winchester School of Art. He joined glam rock group Roxy Music as its synthesiser player in 1971, recording two albums with the group before departing in 1973.

In 1973 began releasing atmospheric instrumental albums with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp, as

well as art rock solo albums such as Here Come the Warm Jets (1974) and Another Green World (1975). Released in 1978, the groundbreaking Ambient 1: Music for Airports gave a name to the genre that he would be most closely associated with, although Eno would sporadically return to vocal-based songwriting throughout his career, as on 2005's Another Day on Earth and 2022's FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE. Eno released a number of eclectic ambient electronic and acoustic albums.

He coined the term "ambient music", which is designed to modify the listener's perception of the

surrounding environment.
In the liner notes accompanying Ambient 1: Music for Airports, Eno wrote: "Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular, it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

In January 1975 Eno was hit by a taxi while crossing the street and spent several weeks recuperating at

home. His girlfriend brought him an old record of harp music, which he lay down to listen to. He realized that he had set the amplifier to a very low volume, and one channel of the stereo was not working, but he lacked the energy to get up and correct it. "This presented what was for me a new way of hearing music – as part of the ambience of the environment just as the colour of the light and sound of the rain were parts of the ambience."

Eno's first work of ambient music was Discreet Music (1975), again created with an elaborate tape-

delay methodology which he diagrammed on the back cover of the LP; it is considered the landmark album of the genre. This was followed by his Ambient series: Music for Airports (Ambient 1), The Plateaux of Mirror (Ambient 2) featuring Harold Budd on keyboard, Day of Radiance (Ambient 3) with American composer Laraaji playing zither and hammered dulcimer, and On Land (Ambient 4)).

He also became a highly successful producer for rock and pop acts such as U2, Coldplay, David Bowie, and Talking Heads. Additionally, he released albums in collaboration with Harold Budd, Cluster, John Cale, his brother Roger Eno, David Byrne, James and many more.

BOX I - INSTRUMENTAL

By Lindsay Planer

Ever the iconoclast, if there is one thing that Brian Eno has done with any degree of consistency throughout his varied career, it is presenting his art in an array of perpetually "out of the box" forums. All that changed -- in a manner of speaking -- with the release of two companion multi-disc compilations. Eno Box I: Instrumentals (1994) condenses his wordless creations, while Eno Box II: Vocals (1993) does the same for the rest of his major works on a similarly sized volume. Interestingly -- and in his typically contrary fashion -- this initial installment was actually issued last.

BRIAN FERRY   BRIAN ENO

Each of Eno Box I: Instrumentals' three CDs respectively concentrates on a specific facet of the artist's copious back catalog. Disc one takes a more or less chronological approach to instrumental selections

from the Eno albums Another Green World (1975) and Before and After Science (1977) prior to focusing on his movie music. "Dover Beach", his contribution to the Derek Jarman-directed masterpiece Jubilee (1978), is then followed by titles from the limited-edition vinyl promotional Directors' Edition of Music for Films (1976), the publicly released Music for Films (1978), and Music for Films, Vol. 2 (1983), concluding with several sides from Music for Films, Vol. 3 (1988).

DAVID BYRNE    BRIAN ENO

Disc two picks right up where the first left off, garnering four additional Music for Films, Vol. 3 entries
prior to providing an overview to Eno's collaborations with notables such as David Bowie, Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, Daniel Lanois, Roger Eno, and Robert Fripp.

JAH WOBBLE   BRIAN ENO   JOHN CALE

Disc three then offers samplings from Music for Airports (1978), The Shutov Assembly (1992), On

Land (1982), Thursday Afternoon (1985), Discreet Music (1975), and Neroli (1993), several of which have been truncated for inclusion here. It is also worth mentioning that all the contents are encoded with exceptionally high-fidelity super-bit mapping.
