Bobby Whitlock: (18-03-1948 - 10-08-2025) Derek And The Dominos: The Layla Sessions 1970 (20th Anniversary Edition) 1990 + In Concert 1973

BOBBY WHITLOCK

Robert Stanley “Bobby” Whitlock (March 18, 1948 – August 10, 2025) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician renowned for his role as a keyboardist and vocalist in the blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos, Though he's best known as a member of the short-lived but groundbreaking group Derek and the Dominoes with Eric Clapton, Whitlock has had a very impressive

musical career. Raised in Arkansas and Memphis, by the time he was a teenager he was playing on many of the sessions at the legendary Stax Studios and was in fact the first white artist signed to Stax Records. With a soulful voice soaked in gospel, R&B, and blues and accomplished keyboard skills, it was only a matter of time before the limelight found him.
Upon seeing him perform in a Memphis Club, he was asked by Delaney & Bonnie to join their band. Whitlock began a friendship with Eric Clapton when Delaney & Bonnie and Friends toured with him and would soon be part of Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes project.

DEREK AND THE DOMINOS

Derek and the Dominos were an English–American blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by

singer-guitarist Eric Clapton, keyboardist-singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon. In the early '70s, after the breakup of Blind Faith and his departure from Delaney & Bonnie, Eric Clapton made a last attempt at being "just one of the boys in the band" with Derek and the Dominos.

It was his most inspired of those efforts, although the band only managed one studio album and a tour

before falling apart. Powered by the dual guitars of Clapton and Duane Allman, the band created a raw, emotional sound. In tandem with Duane Allman, the two guitars wailed with pure, naked emotion, notably on the album's evergreen "Layla," which became a classic-rock evergreen.

Powered by the dual guitars of Clapton and Duane Allman, the band created a raw, emotional sound. In

tandem with Duane Allman, the two guitars wailed with pure, naked emotion, notably on the album's evergreen "Layla," which became a classic-rock evergreen. The band's only album release, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was produced by Tom Dowd, and also featured extensive contributions on lead and slide guitar from Duane Allman.

A double album, Layla did not immediately enjoy strong sales or receive widespread radio airplay, but

went on to earn critical acclaim. Although released in 1970 it was not until March 1972 that the album's single "Layla" (a tale of unrequited love inspired by Clapton's infatuation with his friend George Harrison's wife, Pattie Boyd) made the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career.

DEREK AND THE DOMINOS - THE LAYLA SESSIONS (20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION) 1990

In August 1970 Eric Clapton retreated with several sidemen from Delaney & Bonnie to record the material that would form Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. From these meager beginnings

grew his greatest album. Duane Allman joined the band shortly after recording began, and his spectacular slide guitar pushed Clapton to new heights.
Then again, Clapton may have gotten there without him, considering the emotional turmoil he was in during the recording. He was in hopeless, unrequited love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison, and that pain surges throughout Layla, especially on its epic title track.
