Ross Daly (born 29 September 1952) is a world musician who specializes in the Cretan lyra.
Although of Irish descent, he has been living on the island of Crete for over 35 years. In 1990, Daly designed a new type of Cretan lyra that incorporates elements of raki, the byzantine lyra, and the Indian sarangi. The result was a lyra with three playing strings of 29 cm in length (the same as the standard Cretan lyra), and 18 sympathetic strings which resonate on Indian-styled jawari bridges (the number of sympathetic strings was later increased to 22).
Ross Daly has traveled the world, mainly in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, studying various forms of local music traditions. In 1982 he established an
educational institution called Labyrinth Musical Workshop, which since 2002 is situated in the village of Houdetsi, on the island of Crete. Seminars and "master-classes" are conducted every year at Labyrinth with some of the greatest teachers of traditional music from around the world. It is a meeting point for musicians and students and is recognized as the leading institution in Greece today, in the field of education of modal and traditional music in general.
Daly has released more than 35 albums of his own compositions and of his own arrangements of
traditional melodies collected during his travels. Ross Daly is the originator of the term Contemporary Modal Music, which refers to contemporary compositional works which draw their influences and inspiration from the broader world of Modal musical traditions which are found primarily (although not exclusively) in the vast geographical region between Western Africa and Western China.
Although of Irish descent, Ross Daly has been living the past 35 years on the island of Crete in Greece. He is a recognized expert on the island’s rich musical tradition. He is also well respected
for his ability to bring artists of seemingly unrelated traditions together in collaborations of unique quality and depth. After many years of intensive training in a variety of musical traditions, Daly turned his attention to composition drawing heavily on all of the knowledge which he acquired during his long apprenticeships. Crete still provides a base for his personal and musical research as he continues travelling to perform his music. Today, Ross Daly continues performing whilst directing the Musical Workshop “Labyrinth” in the village of Houdetsi on Crete, which he founded in 1982.

02. ROSS DALY - ΣΥΝΑΥΓΕΙΑ (SYNAVGEIA) 1998
Συναύγια (Synavgia) is a work by Ross Daly that combines Eastern and Western musical traditions. It can be found as a recorded album and has also been performed in concerts, such as at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Synavgeia includes music that relies firmly on two conflicting traditions, the West and the East, to achieve their successful synthesis. It is not a new look at the past, but a contemporary musical creation that unfolds the thread of continuity with tradition. Ross Daly's music (lyra, saz, oud, lute, rabab, kemanche) speaks a language that is both primordial and pioneering in the soul of the listener.
It leads him along the forgotten paths revealed by the communion in a pulsating land. The Chemirani Trio (zarb, bendir, udu, daff) touch the membrane with their fingers and vibrate the earth. And Rufus Cappadocia (cello) and Giorgos Symeonidis (ney) add their own version to this mystical ritual.

04. ROSS DALY - THE OTHER SIDE 2014
"Where does music come from?" He answered, "doesn't everybody have an other side to themselves which they don't really know? Music comes from there..."
The other side...
Everything has a form, everything has a meaning. On the other side, everything has nothing and nothing is everything…
The other side
Music, a thousand year journey in a single lifespan...

This immediately caught my attention, as it ticked 3 boxes for me - modal composition, longform structure & 'unusual', i.e. exotic instrumentation - so i shall look forward to listening to these very much. Thank you, Kostas.
