The Sick Rose was the best Italian Garage band, well known all over the world. They played a “pure” Garage Punk of the sixties, but with all the energy and the roughness of Punk and Power Pop of
post '80s. Masterpieces like “Faces” will never again be recorded! Sick Rose was formed in 1983 in Turin and was originally composed by Luca Re (vocals), Diego Mese (guitar) and completed by Maurizio Campisi (bass), Dante Garimanno (drums), Rinaldo Doro (keyboards). The name of the group refers to the poem of the same name written by the English poet William Blake.
Leading Garage Band in the 80’s with the groundbreaking Faces album,
In addition to an incessant live activity all over Europe, sharing the stage with international acts like The Lyres, The Stems, The Fuzztones, The Chesterfield Kings, The Nomads to name a few, the band’s career has been highlighted by several renowned collaborations in the recording studio.
The Sick Rose and The Last Drive from Greece, were arguably the first European garage bands to have the impact globally in the same manner as The Chesterfield Kings (from the Timothy Gassen's book Knights of Fuzz 1980-1995). Lead garage band in the Eighties, the band performed live
with some legends of the genre (The Fuzztones, Dream Syndicate, The Nomads, Stomach Mouths and so on) and produced four full records until the break-up in 1990.The Sick Rose comes back in 2006 with a new work, Blastin' out, produced by DOM MARIANI, the legendary leader of the Stems / DM3, gaining a very good critic response and leading the band to several promotion tours of Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain, opening for Jeff Conolly (Lyres).
After a first 7 connected to Lost Trails magazine, they debuted the single Get along Girl released in
1986 by Electric Eye, which awaited the Faces album which featured mostly original songs written in a style that could to look like a 1966 Texan band. The record followed a major tour in Northern Europe. In 1988 they released their second album, Shaking Street expected from the single Double Shot.
After a collection and their third album Floating (1990), Diego Mese leaves the group. Luca Re with a
new renaissance public formation in 1992, which will be the last release of the group before the break-up. In 1999 the band reorganized first with a sporadic live activity to reach the release of a new work, the EP Italian Fuzz Explosion (2001, reissued in 2004 expanded to The Modern Boys with an Old Disease) and five years later produced the album Dom Mariani.
In 2010 Dom Mariani flew from Australia to produce The Sick Rose 6th album, No Need For Speed. In September 2014 a Live in Studio EP Recording of obscure beatlesque cover songs has been
released on a 4 songs 7 inch EP by Area Pirata Records, supported by a music video of Girl On The Train originally by The Liverpool Echo. In 2016, The Sick Rose celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1st Album Faces with a European Tour and a deluxe vinyl reissue of the iconic LP. To celebrate its 35th birthday, The Sick Rose releases a new studio album titled “Someplace Better” (2018) is the group’s seventh LP, and this time the record was produced by American singer, songwriter, producer Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M., Posies, Big Star).
For the first time, the band has recorded only originals. The eleven songs are the sum of all The Sick
Rose’s musical influences − from the Garage Rock of the early days, to the R’n’R of Shaking Street, on to the Power Pop characterising the group’s later records. The new album is partly inspired by the sound of bands from the early 1980s, such as Records, 20/20 and Shoes. In the following years the band toured Europe opening the concerts of Jeff Conolly of Lyres. In 2011 they released a new album No Need for Speed also produced by Dom Mariani.
In 2017, thirty years after its first release, the debut album Faces was reissued in a luxury 180g vinyl
version by Italian vinyl. This is followed by tours throughout Europe. In March 2018, on the occasion of the thirty-fifth anniversary, Someplace Better, the band's seventh album, was released for Area Pirata Records, consisting entirely of original songs. The production of the album is entrusted to Ken Stringfellow.
To celebrate their 35th birthday, The Sick Rose releases a new studio album! “Someplace Better” is the
group’s seventh LP, and this time the record was produced by American singer, songwriter, producer Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M., Posies, Big Star). “Someplace Better” comes out of a constant search for new ways of expression, while ignoring transient fashions and knowing always how to be in the right place at the wrong time.
The Sick Rose evolved through the decades into adulthood as a true r'n'r band, beyond all typical
stereotypes, with critically acclaimed works like Blastin' Out in 2006 and No Need For Speed in 2011. Someplace Better, the band's 7th album released in 2018, represents the sum total of all their influences and experiences: from the raw garage rock of the early days to the more polished powerpop of today.

Yes THE SICK ROSE a classic of the revival garage bands. I bought these back in the 80's. Besides this one i have 3 or 4 others.
ReplyDeleteFrom the book T. Gassen i probably have 98% of all entries and by that i mean the improved output.
An ELDORADO for discoverses of this and similar music.
Since you get so little feedback about the fine garage band, i have to say something else.
ReplyDeleteCertainly her strongest ! Always great how you always choose the best of the bands.
In addition to many other very good bands from Italy, i would like to mention NOT MOVING in this context, which i discovered in the 80's.
NO WORSE,ON THE CONTRACY !
I used to have this LP but I am not sure what happened to it. Thanks for posting this!
