Mark William Lanegan (November 25, 1964 – February 22, 2022) was an American singer, songwriter, and poet. During an interview with The Rocket in 1996, he said that he drove a combine harvester when he was younger. He was of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh descent. He said that he developed an alcohol use disorder by age 12, and began using drugs heavily by the age of 18, having already been arrested and sentenced to one year's imprisonment for drug-related crimes.
As a teenager he had numerous brushes with the law for drug and alcohol offences. A notorious drunk
by the time he was 12, he admitted that he had started taking heroin as a way to beat his alcohol problem. An obituary in The Guardian by Stevie Chick remembered him as "one of his generation's most soulful singers". In Variety, music writer Chris Morris described him as "impassioned" and "adventurous".
First becoming prominent as the lead singer for the early grunge band Screaming Trees, he was also
known as a member of Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins. He released 12 solo studio albums, as well as three collaboration albums with Isobel Campbell and two with Duke Garwood. He was known for his baritone voice, which was described as being "as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather" and has been compared to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave.
Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington by vocalist
Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel was replaced by Barrett Martin in 1991. Screaming Trees became known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, Malfunkshun, among others. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements.
Thus Screaming Trees were formed in 1984, and they released their debut album, Clairvoyance, in
1986. The band built a following on the indie circuit with their raw, punk-charged songs, but it was not until 1992 that they broke through to a wide audience when their song Nearly Lost You was used in the movie Singles and became a hit on the US alternative airplay and mainstream rock charts. This was from their sixth album, Sweet Oblivion, with Screaming Trees now signed to Epic, having been with the independent label SST.
Lanegan’s stint with Queens of the Stone Age began after he struck up a friendship with the band’s
founder, Josh Homme, while he toured with Screaming Trees as an extra guitarist. Lanegan was a permanent member for a time, then enjoyed a friendly arrangement as a part-time contributor. This eventually ended by mutual consent. “It was too easy,” Lanegan confessed. “I needed to do something else.”
In April 2004, Lanegan released an EP with former Belle & Sebastian vocalist Isobel Campbell, titled
Time Is Just the Same. They would later release a single entitled "Ramblin' Man" for their collaboration album Ballad of the Broken Seas. Campbell wrote and recorded the majority of the album's tracks in Glasgow, with Lanegan adding vocals in Los Angeles.
The Gutter Twins was a collaboration between Lanegan and Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers vocalist
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE |
Greg Dulli. Working on a collaborative album since at least 2003, the pair first played as The Gutter Twins in Rome in September2005. Saturnalia was released on March 4, 2008, on Sub Pop, a label both Dulli and Lanegan had worked with before. The duo's first tour commenced on February 14, 2008, in New York City and continued in March and April throughout Europe and the United States.
Mark William Lanegan, singer, songwriter and author, born 25 November 1964; died 22
February 2022. The death of Mark Lanegan, the former vocalist with the bands Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, at the age of 57, feels painfully premature, but he had been walking a tightrope for most of his life. Last year, Covid-19 rendered him deaf, unable to walk and frequently comatose; he wrote a terrifying account of the experience in Devil in a Coma (2021).
MARK LANEGAN - WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST 1994
Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is the second solo album by former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan. The album builds upon the roots music foundation that Lanegan had established with his debut The Winding Sheet.

MARK LANEGAN - HAS GOD SEEN MY SHADOW? AN ANTHOLOGY (1989 - 2011) 2014
An Anthology 1989-2011 is a compilation that presents a useful overview of Lanegan's solo work, pulling representative tracks from his first six albums, from The Winding Sheet to 2004's Bubblegum, along with a pair of rare single sides and a bonus disc that includes 12 previously unreleased
performances. While the instrumental approach and the sophistication of these songs shift as the album goes along (especially on the first part, which largely moves backwards through Lanegan's chronology), the theme and tone remain remarkably consistent, as Lanegan ponders his soul and the earthly circumstances that contain him while languid melodies drift by, and his voice hits a richly emotional chord without sinking into melodrama. Has God Seen My Shadow covers a lot of familiar ground, but the 12 unreleased tracks amount to an album's worth on unheard pleasures, and if you've never been introduced to Lanegan's music, this is beautiful, challenging stuff for those dark nights of the soul.

Screaming Trees On Urban Aspirines HERE
How much work, thank you. Nicely done. Some i have others not.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that he died and that he was still so young, terrible.
Many hours of work for this post.
DeleteI believe you. I really feel sorry for you with all this work. M. L. has also written an autobiography which should not be uninteresting. I'm waiting too see if i can get them cheap antiquarium. Otherwise i have to order three of your entry. I myself have from him mainly from the early days. Terrible shame about the people and exc. musicians.
DeleteI miss him. His voice was astonishing and so was his restless pursuit of new sounds and new collaborators. I didn't know he said that staying in QOTSA was "too easy", but that describes a man who made great art but was never satisfied with his work.
DeleteI have all these records, but enjoyed reading the post as well as the photos and poster art that you chose! Mark's work with Soulsavers is also very beautiful.
There is a nice interview in IT'S PSYCHEDELIC BABY MAGAZINE with Eddie Flowers from the GIZMOS. GIZMOS a fantastic L. A. punk band from 1976/77. There is also a nice long (!) list from him with his top favourites where you can probably recommend most of them without reservation.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh!!! I didn't know he died! He was still so young, what a pity!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the albums! Cheers
