Vagina Lips: Negative Feelings 2022

 

The project Vagina Lips began in July 2015 in Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece as a duo

of Zimmy Lips (Jimmy Polioudis) on guitar, vocals and Lostinthe (Konstantinos Iosifidis) on drums, vocals. With music that lives up to his provocative stage name, The Vagina Lips is the brainchild of Jimmy Polioudis. Lo-Fi aesthetics, ‘80s shoegaze and melodic vocals combine to form a dynamic sound which sets it apart from Greece’s other guitar-based projects.
                       

Initially formed as a duo in July 2015 with Jimmy (Kid Galax, Valley Of Love, The Archangel Cobra) on guitar and Losinthe (Psychedelic Trips to Death) on drums, The Vagina Lips quickly gained a

reputation for their energetic live shows and their ear-shatteringly garage-pop sound. They released a self-titled cassette (now collectible) at Random Tapes in the same year. And although Losinthe has departed, the quality remains. Indeed, the first EP, Youth In Chaos, was released through MoMi Records to widespread acclaim in March 2016. And that was only the beginning. Just months later, Polioudis released his project’s first full-length record, the stunning Athanasia, which rolls together elements of Nirvana and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
                       

In May 2016 Konstantinos left and Vagina Lips became Zimmy’s solo project. In August 2016 he

recorded (with the help of Konstantinos, who is the permanent producer of Vagina Lips) the digital album “Athanasia”, which was listed on many musical sites among the best albums in 2016.
                 

In his second album, Generation Y, recorded in the summer of 2018 and released a few months later via Inner Ear Records, Jimmy Polioudis straddles bludgeoning post punk with melodic pop and new wave forms, intended to compel. Influenced by his own generation and the bands that shaped 80s and 90s

(Killing Joke, Sonic Youth, Stereolab) he manages a balance of humour vs. drama that keeps the album afloat. This is, if anything, a portrait of The Vagina Lips at his most self-indulgently intensive and energetic, mocking fake perfection (“The Good Life”), remembering the lost innocence (“Boy June”), while wallowing in an incomparable musical vacuum that takes pride in its gloom imagery and clinging intensity, sounding darkly energized, harmonious and consistent.
In March 2016 MO.MI records released Youth In Chaos, a 5 song digital mini.
              

At the same time, Zimmy Lips had a solo appearance on a popular greek TV show and due to this

(coupled with the eccentric band name) the music project of Vagina Lips became somewhat more widely known. “Athanasia” was followed by the digital releases: Decadent Life (EP 2016), Elixir (album, 2017), Vernorexia (mini album, 2017), Lust For Trash (album, 2017), Of Our Lives (2017). In February 2018, Inner Ear released the album “Athanasia” for the first time in limited edition vinyl.
                       

During the last two years Vagina Lips (aka Zimmy) has performed live in many venues and festivals,

the most important of which are: PS2020, Plissken, Westside Festival and Saristra. His latest album “Generation Y” was released in November 2018 via Inner Ear. His new album “Outsider Forever” is expected in the beginning of 2020.
                     

The English-speaking alter ego of Jimi Polioudis, The Vagina Lips, returns with the album Negative Feelings after a 2.5-year recording absence, which actually wasn't an absence as the Greek-speaking project of MAZOHA was active all this time. Negative Feelings is a pure indie album, faithful to the

post punk, shoegaze and 90s American rock influences of Vagina Lips.
Both the more mellow moments: Intentions, Sad B4 It Was Cool, and the more up-tempo tracks: Get Off The Train, It's Alright, Another Hit, Modern World, are characterized by intense happiness, but without "blackening" the listener , but instead they take us on a positive, almost dreamlike pattern. There is no shortage of loud and rough sounding moments with tracks like Braindead and Tombstone that grab you by the throat from the first note.
