Balaam And The Angel: The Greatest Story ever Told 1986

Balaam and the Angel are a Scottish rock band founded by Mark, James (Jim), and Desmond (Des)

Morris in Cannock, England in 1984 by the Scottish-born Morris brothers, vocalist/bassist Mark, drummer Des, and guitarist Jim. The siblings started their career while still children, playing men's clubs as a cabaret-styled act; as adults, they began as a more pop-oriented unit, but found themselves affiliated with the goth rock movement.

As children in Motherwell, Scotland, the Morris brothers worked in the entertainment industry as part

of a cabaret act. They moved south to Cannock, Staffordshire, England, where they formed Balaam and the Angel.
Initially the band self-released a series of EP's and an album entitled Sun Family via their own Chapter 22 label and played some tour dates opening for The Cult.

This caught the attention of Virgin Records, who signed them and released their debut album, The

Greatest Story Ever Told. It peaked at No. 67 in the UK Albums Chart in August 1986. They toured in the United States with The Mission, Kiss and label mate Iggy Pop.

A second guitarist and the first non-sibling, Ian McKean of Twenty Flight Rockers, was added to the

band in 1988. The band began to move away from gothic rock music styles into a sound that had more in common with hard rock.

The group resurfaced with second guitarist Ian McKean in 1988 with the harder-edged Live Free or

Die. Like its predecessor, the LP failed to make a dent in the charts, but Balaam & the Angel soldiered on, traveling to San Francisco to record 1989's Days of Madness; when it also failed commercially, Virgin opted to cut their losses and dropped the band from their contract. Under the abbreviated name Balaam, they issued the 1991 heavy metal EP No More Innocence; Prime Time followed in 1993.

Their song I'll Show You Something Special appeared on the soundtrack for the film, Planes, Trains and

Automobiles. Their presence was largely ignored by the time that their 1993 album, Prime Time, had failed to interest record buyers.

  3. My local disco in Dundee, Fat Sam's, used to host 'Dance Factory' on Sunday nights, an ongoing series of live gigs by relatively unknown bands. Balaam & The Angel were one of dozens of bands I saw there during the mid-80s and few made it really big, the others, like these guys, carrying on for a few years then fading away. Thank you for posting this, it brings back some good memories.
