THE  SEX  PISTOLS

Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often shouted political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through independent record labels.

THE  UNDERTONES

The term "punk rock" was previously used by American rock critics in the early 1970s to describe the mid-1960s garage bands. Certain late 1960s and early 1970s Detroit acts, such as MC5 and Iggy and the Stooges, and other bands from elsewhere created out-of-the-mainstream music that became highly influential on what was to come.

THE  DAMNED

Glam rock in the UK and the New York Dolls from New York have also been cited as key influences. Between 1974 and 1976, when the genre that became known as punk was developing, prominent acts included Television, Patti Smith, and the Ramones in New York City; the Saints in Brisbane; and the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned in London, and the Buzzcocks in Manchester.

THE  STRANGLERS

By late 1976, punk had become a major cultural phenomenon in the UK. It gave rise to a punk subculture that expressed youthful rebellion through distinctive styles of clothing, such as T-shirts with deliberately offensive graphics, leather jackets, studded or spiked bands and jewellery, safety pins, and bondage and S&M clothes.

THE  BUZZCOCKS

OK, there have been a ton of this type of album. They all have similar songs on, in fact the cross over of songs is sometimes almost identical. This is definately a must own album for anyone who is, in the slightest bit, interested in Punk. Anthem after anthem, there is not a bad track to be found. Punk from when it was being defined. The eternal line ‘Gordon is a moron’ and Buzzcocks classics like ‘Ever Fallen In Love’ remind us who we have to thank for the likes of Green Day and company.

THE  RAMONES

If you really want to know what was going on in England in the late 70's, apart from the dreaded disco era, then you are not going to go wrong with any of the collections out there. However what does set this one apart from the others is, to me at least, the greatest cover version of a song ever...My Way by Sid Viscious!

THE  ONLY  ONES

Sid's rendition, although a little over produced by Mr McClaren, is down and dirty with all the edges bared. Sid manages to change the words on certain lines which unless you listen to them a couple of times you may not pick up.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS

Needless to say many of the new lines are unprintable. Sid was never the brightest of men, in fact he only made it into the Pistols because he fit the mold better than Glen Matlock, who really could play bass. Sid just knew how to pose with his mock Elvis sneer.

THE  JAM

Anyway, you are not going to go wrong with this album. There are a couple of clinkers on it, how many times can you list to Tom Robinson singing 2-4-6-8? I would have much rather had "sing if you're glad to be gay".

THE  SAINTS

And they definitely could have dropped the Motors singing "Dancing the night away". But the highlights include The Only Ones, Adverts, Stranglers, Damned, Pistols, and my old favorite the punk poet himself John Cooper Clarke.
