The band was formed by housemates Taylor, Wilson and Martens and former band member Calum
Newton (AKA Candy) in Balaclava, Melbourne. The four wrote, recorded, and released their first EP, Giddy Up, in a span of 12 hours. Calum left the band to pursue solo music and was replaced by Gus Romer.
Melbourne-based, '70s rock-inspired punk four-piece Amyl & the Sniffers emerged in the late
2010s as part of a new wave of punk from Australia's East Coast. Sporting a diverse range of mullets and a lawless attitude, the band channeled the unruly energy of their live shows on EPs such as 2017's Big Attraction, a wild blend that recalled early Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Motörhead, and Courtney Barnett. Their self-titled full-length breakthrough landed in 2019, earning the quartet international acclaim. In 2021, they returned with sophomore set Comfort to Me.
They take their name from the Australian slang for amyl nitrite, also known as poppers. Amy Taylor compared their music to the drug in an interview with Paul Glynn of the BBC: "In Australia we call
poppers Amyl. So you sniff it, it lasts for 30 seconds and then you have a headache – and that's what we're like!" Their sound has been compared to 1970s hard rock groups such as Iggy Pop and The Stooges and The Damned. However, Taylor has cited a number of varying influences including Minor Threat, Ceremony, AC/DC, Sleaford Mods, Dolly Parton and Cardi B. A second EP Big Attraction was released in 2017.
Their debut LP, Amyl and the Sniffers, arrived in the summer of 2019 and included the singles
"Monsoon Rock" and "Got You." It later won the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album. After their own headlining trek helped push them deeper into mosh pits around the world, they returned home for a follow-up. Amidst the turmoil of Australia's wildfire season and a global pandemic, the band hunkered down in the same home and began recording their sophomore effort, 2021's Comfort to Me. Hardened and focused, the album featured the singles "Guided by Angels" and "Hertz."

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS - AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS 2019
With an energy befitting a tiny tornado, Australian punk crew Amyl and the Sniffers deliver a series of punches to the jaw with their rollicking self-titled debut. Clocking in at less than 30 minutes, Amyl and the Sniffers is an absolute thrill, the ideal soundtrack to a sweat-and-beer-covered bar brawl. Here,
black eyes and bruises are a welcome trade for the fun and complete abandon within, which owes much to the band's electrifying vocalist, Amy Taylor. Channeling the spirits of forebears Wendy O. Williams, Karen O, and Poly Styrene, she is a riotous force, veering from the mighty ("Gacked on Anger") to the breakneck ("GFY," "Punisha") and the flirtatious ("Got You") to the vulnerable ("Angel"), all within the span of a few songs. While Taylor is undeniably the star of the show, the group -- guitarist Dec Martens, drummer Bryce Wilson, and bassist Gus Romer -- shine when they are given space to breathe.
From the instrumental prelude to "Starfire 500" to the steadily building "Control," Amyl and the Sniffers prove there's more beneath the surface than their scuzzy, mosh-friendly, three-pronged attack. Of their finest moments, the close of "Shake Ya" soars in an all-too-brief minute of psychedelic
noodling before charging straight into the epic rock & roll meltdown of closer "Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled)." Although the album is over just as quickly as it started, the quartet crams enough into this brisk blast that it remains a satisfying, physically exhausting experience, and the sheer excitement of hearing straightforward punk rock attacks such as "Monsoon Rock" is hard to contain. Amyl and the Sniffers is a promising opening salvo from a young band who match a rabid hunger with the chops to back it up.

CONTROL LYRICS
I like being a big bad boss
I like telling people off
I like working under pressure
I'm a freak, it gives me pleasure
I like control, I'm obsessed
I like staying up all night
I like being treated right
I like proving people wrong
It probably means I'll die alone
I like control, I'm obsessed
It's the reason I exist
I like control
I like control
I like control
I like control
I like control
I like control
I'm in control
I'm in control
I like control, I'm obsessed
It's the reason I exist
I like control, I'm obsessed

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS - COMFORT TO ME 2021
During a whirlwind 2019, Melbourne-based punk quartet Amyl and the Sniffers were showered with international acclaim for their ARIA-winning breakthrough debut and incendiary live shows. And just as quickly as they arrived on the scene, they were forced into lockdown when the world was shuttered
by a pandemic and Australia was hit with one of the worst bushfire seasons on record. Hunkered down in the same home, the band funneled their pent-up energy and produced a hardened and (relatively) polished work that managed to be not only as ferocious as their raw debut but even better executed and more focused. That controlled chaos, Comfort to Me, is an explosive thrill, bursting at the seams with Dec Martens' chugging riffs, Bryce Wilson's bashing drums, Gus Romer's threatening basslines, and Amy Taylor's charisma and defiance.
An absolute force of nature, Taylor remains the star of the show, even as the band have boosted their attack to create an evolved monster fueled by anger, frustration, and existential dread. Whipped
immediately into a frenzy with "Guided By Angels," Comfort is a non-stop romp, frothing with blood, sweat, and spit. The no-frills hardcore of raucous headbangers like "Freaks to the Front" and "Don't Need a C**t (Like You to Love Me)" launch listeners into the mosh pit, while groove-heavy, L7-esque lurchers such as "Laughing," "Choices," and "Snakes" get the body moving as the imaginary boots of a crowd surfer swing precariously close to another concussion. While every song is a highlight in its own right, "Hertz" is a standout in the band's catalog, a new wave buzzsaw that piles on a melodic groove, soaring guitar solo, and Taylor's escapist demands to "Take me to the beach/Take me to the country!" Her lyrics are the secret weapon on Comfort to Me, an evolution forced by global turmoil and simply
growing up, veering from self-empowerment and newfound freedom ("Choices," "Laughing," and "Don't Fence Me In") to larger issues such as misogyny, climate change, politics, human rights, and more (which are tackled on the heady "Capital" and the frustrated "Knifey"). Their rapid growth is as head-spinning as the songs themselves, lending a triumphant air to Comfort to Me that keeps Amyl and the Sniffers primed and ready to conquer the world -- again.

That's a thing. An Aussie band i don't know. Fanatstic, thank you.
ReplyDeleteFor the last 10-15 years i haven't been very informed about the Aussie scene. I'm all the more for it and i think everything that's good from the scene from the end of the 70s to maybe 2000 is equipped with a good 1000 cs/lps. Of course also the 60s & early 70s with hundreds. I'm really happy that after along time i'm getting to know something unknown about Australia.
A good day and a nice discovery for me and in a few hour's i'm going to my friend to exchange. Also a wonderful sunny day without a cloud at 25 agress. What more could you want.
Today is a rainy day in Athens, without sunlight.
DeleteAlready ordered everything from amazon. Without hearing a sound.
DeleteIs also no necessary. You can see how great my trust in you is.
Thank you friend. Amyl and the Sniffers is the best Punk band I heard the last years.
DeleteA great band, thank you. They remind me (a little) of Be Your Own Pet - well worth checking out.
ReplyDeleteThank you, will be a very enjoyable set.
