28th Day: The Complete Recordings 2003

This mid-80's paisley pop group based in Chico CA featured Cole Marquis , Barbara Manning

and drummer Michael Cloward.
Even though this neo-psych band garnered plaudits and acclaim, 28th Day would eventually become more well known for being the first band to call Barbara Manning a member. Manning, who would later find success as a member of the World of Pooh and S.F. Seals, as well as becoming a sort of indie/underground legend, played bass in 28th Day alongside Cole Marquis on vocals and guitar, and Mike Cloward on drums.

Although Manning would grow into a force as a songwriter in subsequent projects, the majority of 28th Day's work was written by Marquis. Their debut LP, released on Enigma in 1985, would be the only

studio work from the band, which was to split a short time later. That collection would be expanded in 1992, and then again in 2004, to much acclaim on each occasion. Manning would go on to many other projects, including the aforementioned World of Pooh, S.F. Seals, and the Go-Luckys!, while Marquis would go on to form the Downsiders.
(By Chris True)

One of those albums that did absolutely nothing upon its release but has developed a certain cult cachet

over the years, 28th Day is the recording debut of both indie rock darling Barbara Manning and cult singer/songwriter Cole Marquis. Produced by True West's Russ Tolman and released through his own Bring Out Your Dead imprint via True West's label, Enigma Records, 28th Day is in many ways just another minor release in the post-paisley underground school of California indie rock.

However, the songs' obsessive acoustic guitar strums and clipped, propulsive beats tie 28th Day to

fellow travelers like the Cat Heads and Vomit Launch. Like the work of those bands, songs like the ruminative "Pages Turn" (here in two versions) and the swirling, neurotic "25 Pills" suggest that Chico, CA, was the one city in the Northern Hemisphere that was attuned to the Krautrock-inspired art pop of New Zealand's Flying Nun label.

The album's high point is the tense, strangled "Burnsite," a Manning song that climaxes in one of the

most anguished screams this side of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. 28th Day broke up shortly after the release of this album, which was reissued on the Skyclad label in the early '90s and again as part of the career retrospective Complete Recordings in 2003.

  3. I have 9 entries with 17 cds on my want list so far. I have browsed through your entries looking for what else might be interesting for me and i am thrilled by the beauty of the entries. I couldn't do it better myself as far as the quality of the music is concerned. I would certainly do a few things differently if i had a blog. Of course, there are musical genres that are missing or not well presented here. In return i could offer next to nothing especialliy Greece & Ethnic.

Today i received to the Swedish DUNGEN ALLA SAK, which i was missing, which was very good again. I also have 4 more.

    1. What do you mean writing: "Of course there are musical genres that are missing or not well presented here"? Help me to understand.

    2. I would be happy to give you info:
There is a complete lack of singer- songwriters old & new. You brought 1× Steve Forbert as an example of what i mean. Also Power Pop, Pop- Psyche, Pop in general. ( i love too Sagittarius, Millenium etc...) I would also bring more international, an examole Italy ( new). You've only made 2-3 entries here. By the way, i also like country/ weird country.
This doesn't have to be the case, you don't need to worry about it. If that's your " profile", it's more than ok. It strikes me anyway that you have a certain system for the entries.

    3. I always want to upload a lot of stuff from different genres of music, but when I get to the point of uploading something, then something else comes to my mind, I rush to upload it, then I forget about the previous one, and history repeats itself. The day before yesterday I uploaded the 28th Day which I didn't have in the program at all, I just achieved them in front of me, while I wanted to upload Warren Zevon. Anyway, what can I explain? I don't usually schedule my posts. (There are many Italian names in the blog anyway)

  4. Yesterday i published a short entry on the 1000 days of the UKRAINE WAR. Maybe you missed it. Now i have to ride my bike into town to make copies for more than 60 cds. I don't like it at all, but what can you do.

    1. I didn't find any post of you about Ukraine. Are you sure you post it to me? You know that I don't censor the comments. Try to post it again.

    2. Accusing me that I censor the comments makes me angry.

    3. I only didn't post the comment of MAX, because it was offensive to me.

    4. If something went wrong with the Ukraine text, i APOLOGIZE !
      Pity about the text.

    5. Try to write it again. You know very well that Urban Aspirines is a full democratic blog without censorship. Google sometimes blocks some comments. It happens very rarely, but you know the content of the comment, I don't. And then, you know that I don't like Putin and his dangerous ideas. You know even that I hate dictators and fascist pigs. (I like pigs, they are very smart creatures)

    6. Ok. I'm going to rewrite the text straight again.

  5. I see you don't want to publish my Ukraine post. That settles the matter for me. I didn't personally insult anyone in the entry. If i can't tolerate something it's censorship !!! Do you think politics takes place in a vacuum where only the top villains are guilty ? Politics is only possible if it is supposed by an overwhelming majority.
Maybe you should read texts a little more carefully. If i wrote Italy than i wrote new in brackets. But enough.

  6. Dedicated to the poor, abused and brave UKRAINE. I can't do much more.
PUTIN THE GREAT GOPNIK. Gopnik is an untranslatable Russian word, it means something like little rowdy', backyard bully.
By definition a Gopnik cannot be a great man.
But a certain Gopnik had a large pig. In a paredoxical way, a dwarf has become a giant.
Millions of Gopniks in Russia understand the great Gopnik and consider him one of their own. In a land where everyone dreams of becoming a Gopnik but usually remains a trembling creature, the great Gopbik is a folk hero. He has become a popular icon. Today the Kreml portrays the 90s as a criminal mess, an American colony. In reality, Russia gained great freedom but they didn't know what to do with it. The great Gopnik appears on the political stage. An ex-spy, unexployed and also worked as a taxi driver. And now watch out ! In 1999 he becomes prime minister if a huge country and from 2000 its president. Russia is dumbed down, even though it was never particularly smart. Greatbritain is stupid because it made the most senseless decesion. The USA is stupid because it somehow elected a complete ideot as president. My dear France is dumbed down in which anti- semitic and xenophobic forces are pushing to wards the government. The followers of social network are dumbed down, as are their opponents. The parliaments and governments of many countries are dumbed down. Dumbed down, the working class - is a total failure.
    Are dumbed down.......

  7. Many, many thanks. I am overjoyed at having this collection posted. I picked it up on vinyl on eBay a while back, and I can testify that it is indeed a tremendous album. For me, it was one of those wonderful discoveries which provides the reason for my relentless hunt for new music. I'm really looking forward to hearing the bonus material.
    Thanks again.

  8. Today when i went to copy shop i bumped into Erwin on the street. He got a lp entirely gold, one from Sky Saxon from 1974, limited to 100 pieces with he dedication. I didn't know that he was personally in contact with Saxon, from whom he receiced many items as gifts.
At that time Saxon lived in a car, worked as a waiter and had many dogs with him. I always thought out of affection. Far from it. He saw the name dog as a reversal of God...a crazy guy. Erwin is a big lover of the Seeds, i am too, but he is probably even more so. He wanted to communicate via Seeds but Saxon weren't happy with that in the long runs. He was more interested in the present and at some point his interest faded. A story to compensate for the stress i caused you today.
