A fiercely political leftist punk band formed in Hertfordshire, England in 1980 from the remaining
members of The Epileptics (who during the first half of 1979 changed their name to Epi-X, owing to letters of complaint from The British Epilepsy Association) by Colsk Latter (vocals) and Derek Birkett (bass guitar) with guitarists Andy Smith, Neil Puncher, and drummer Sid Ation (who was also a member of Rubella Ballet).
in 1981 the group signed on with the Crass label, adopting the organization's dedication to anarchist
politics and punk abrasion; soon they issued their debut EP New Smell, scoring an indie hit with "Johnny Kidd." Upon forming their own label, Spiderleg, Flux of Pink Indians resurfaced in 1982 with the full-length Strive to Survive Causing Least Suffering Possible.
Not surprisingly their 1983 follow-up, The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks, was banned by many
British retailers; one Manchester indie record shop which did carry the record was subsequently charged for displaying "obscene articles for publication for gain." A long layoff followed before the group -- by-then-known as simply Flux -- returned in 1986 with the largely instrumental Uncarved Block. They disbanded in 1987; Derek Birkett later founded the influential One Little Indian label.
FLUX OF PINK INDIANS - STRIVE TO SURVIVE CAUSING LEAST SUFFERING POSSIBLE 1983
Definitely one of the more aggressive anarcho punk albums you've heard. It's raging bass lines, powerful tribal-like drums at times, chaotic but sharp guitar riffs, and ranting angry vocals. It's exactly an album every punk should hear. Originally released on the band's own Spider leg label, One Little
Indian will re-issue the digitally remastered and expanded edition of Flux of Pink Indians' classic 1983 debut album Strive to Survive Causing Least Suffering Possible. The Strive' line-up comprised Colin Latter (vocals), Derek Birkett (bass guitar), Kevin Hunter (guitars), and Martin Wilson (drums). Formed in 1981, Flux - as they later became known - were contemporaries of Crass and synonymous with the strict vegan, anti-fascist, anti-capitalism, anti-Thatcher anarcho-punk scene of the time.
Great lyrics/vocals,savage guitar, squealing feedback, prominant bass & drums and above all, memorable tunes! Now this excellent expanded reissue,3 cd's-the original 'strive' album and the
'neu smell' ep from 1981,inc.their best known song 'tube disaster'(also recorded under their previous name 'the epileptics',but thats another story..)..A disc of demo's for the strive album (very different, many changed lyrics..definately 'works in progress'..),And a 3rd disc that feature's flux's live,short-lived 're-union' set at the 'feeding of the 5000'gig at the sheperds bush empire, supporting steve ignorant of Crass in nov.2007. The live disc captures that raw energy & excitement...

T.V. DINNERS LYRICS
Reality and fiction both served up neatly to keep us all amused
Reality and fiction have both become the same
Instead of facing the facts we search for new scapegoats to blame
The time has come to stop sitting back
To say "no, we've taken enough of this crap
Violence isn't acceptable in any form
So let's work together to make peace the norm"
The blame lies not within the system
The blame lies not with the state
The blame lies not within religion
We've all learned to love to hate
It lies within each and every one of us
The time has come to stop sitting back
To say "no, we've taken enough of this crap
Violence isn't acceptable in any form
So let's work together to make peace the norm"
Will go out on the streets
And start to re-enact
Fighting, muggings, sexual assaults
Become part of the everyday scene
People acting out what they have seen on the t.v. screen
The time has come to stop sitting back
To say "no, we've taken enough of this crap
Violence isn't acceptable in any form
So let's work together to make peace the norm"
The time has come to change
Before it's too late
Because when we drop the bombs
There will be no one left to love or hate
The time has come to stop sitting back
To say "no, we've taken enough of this crap
Violence isn't acceptable in any form
So let's work together to make peace the norm"
It makes you wonder why they bother with such risks entailed
Is it just a coincidence this atomic power makes
An energy source of uranium from which atom bombs are being made
Behind our backs they scheme and dig mine and your graves
Behind our backs they laugh as their shelters are being made
Out of sight, on the quiet, the plans are being neatly laid
While we sit wasting time in the safe ignored shade
What if soon we were all out in the sun
Dodging the fallout, trying to hide or run
We need to stop it now before they've begun
Don't wait to be asked, no questionnaire will come
They lie we die
We've left it in their bloody hands for far too long
Atomic energy is gonna finance their bomb
They think they fight wars on mine and your behalf
So let's bloody tell 'em, you've got it fucking wrong
They never even knew bombs exist
They'll never have the chance to say or protest
That they didn't want their lives blown to bits
When they crawl from their shelters they'll start it all again
It makes you wonder who are these powermad women and men?
So that in a hundred years they'll be as strong as before
But as usual, at no expense to them
It's no use saying "oh it's too late"
It's no use saying "that it will never happen"
It's no use saying "that's the way it goes"
Is it really the way you wanna go ?
They sigh we cry
We burn they learn
They lie we fry
They dream we scream
They lie we die
Is it really the way you wanna go?
Thanks for the unknown punk band.
ReplyDeleteI'll order it soon over Tschechien. It would have been cheaper via the UK. But thanks Brexit we can forget about it, to the muteral benefit of both parties, haha...thanks for the clever English.
I am glad you said 'English' as I am Scottish and although the UK overall voted for Brexit by a small margin, Scotland voted Remain. Scottish and European.
DeleteDon't worry my friend. I can distinguish between Scotland and England. Yes Scottish and European.
DeleteThis is one of the many Crass-style bands that flew beneath my radar at the time, due in large part to the under-produced, primitive musicality of the releases and the declamatory, didactic messaging (even though i was well on my way to discovering my own libertarian-left consciousness.) Perhaps now's a good time to re-appraise those early releases. Cheers, Kostas.
ReplyDeleteNice to see more from this band as I have the Fits And Starts CD from when it arrived in 2003 since I had taped from my friend in high school back in mid 80's their song: Neu Smell/Tube Disaster/Poem and was quite a hit with my friend group!
ReplyDeleteHi Patrick, I glad to hear ☺️ you again.
DeleteThis was one of my favorites back in the day. Looking fwd to revisiting their work. Much appreciated!
