Slave was a group that recorded with the Deroy Sound Studios that, in our modern day, has gone completely under the radar. No members of the band have been located, the year it was recorded in is a mystery, even the song titles on this one record are unknown. All we have is a limited number of acetate copies emblazoned with the band name Slave and the album title The Lover, The Madman And The Poet. This record has seen a repress in 2021, but for a long time, you could not hear all of the songs this record had to offer on the internet.
Luckily that has been rectified, but the group's whereabouts are currently unknown. In the process of writing this review I actually took a look at one of the labels of the acetate online and saw four names where written on it, "Henry", "Mike", "Bob", and "D.C.". I presume this means we can clarify that Slave likely had four members, but their identities are still unknown.
Overall, I wouldn't say this is some lost masterpiece of psychedelia, but it's something that more people should listen to. If you're a fan of that gloomy psychedelia, I'd say this album has that sort of style too it at some points, especially on the tracks mentioned above, though with a lot more folk influence.
Slow, echo-laden, and atmospheric, using a psyched out twangy guitar and Doors-esque vocals intoning strange and twisted tales: a depressed Jim Morrison colliding with Hank Marvin and Lord Byron in a sonic suicide pact of downer psych-folk mystery. The Shadows on a bad acid trip? UK group discovered via original 1970 acetate. This album was never released on CD.

TRACK 6 THE LOVER, THE MADMAN AND THE POET LYRICS
Empty lie and an empty mind
The world's lost between
Is it only real when it's dark and cold?
The rebirth of my carefree soul
Has withered into death
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?
All the colours of my day
Are flowing from my eyes
The deepest white turns black
My future answers as my past
I'll praise it when I'm old
I'll never work, look back
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?

I've gotta lose the things that I love
I'll blame, yes I'll blame it all on me
It is my fault for I, I am the world
And the world wouldn't set me free
I took my guitar to a lone alley place
Where people, yes leaving
The claws of the world could not add
To these scars on my face
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?
We're lovers, we're poets
We're madmen, we know it
Where did the world go wrong?
I bought this used and a little bit destroyed Vinyl album in Italy in the early 80s, from the American NATO base near Ferrara. Fifteen years ago I converted in an analog CD and then in MP3 with a TASCAM RECORDER. The laser of my TASCAM is broken now and I can't re-copy it and convert it in FLAC. So take it on MP3 as I have it in my archive.
The lyrics and design are very nice.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything else to say about the band. Perfect

Are you familiar with the uk punk band SUBWAY SECT ? One of the earliest, formed 1976.
Yes. I have: The Story Of (Twenty Odd Years) & Singles Anthology & Songs For Sale. After the 80s I lost my interest for them.
DeleteProbably played too often haha...
DeleteIt's not that important. I wouldn't buy it, at least not for the price listed on discogs.
What would life be without its mysteries? Very dull indeed. Thank you for this Kostas.
