Diamanda Galas with John Paul Jones : The Sporting Life 1994

Born in San Diego, California , the daughter of Greek immigrants ( from Mani ) , Galas began studying the piano at the age of five. She studied jazz and classical music , training which reveals itself throughout all her work. She studied a wide range of musical forms , as well as visual-art performance , before moving to Europe. There she made her performance debut at the Festival d'Avignon in France in 1979 , performing the lead in the opera , "Un Jour comme un autre " , by composer Vinko Globokar , based upon the Amnesty International documentation of the arrest and torture of a Turkish woman for alleged treason.
Her work first garnered widespread attention with the controversial 1991 live recording of the album " Plague Mass " (1984 - End of the Epidemic) in the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York. With it , Galas attacked the Roman Catholic Church ( and society in general ) for its indifference to AIDS using biblical texts.
Galas often shrieks , howls , and seems to imitate glossolalia in her performances. Her works largely concentrate on the topics of suffering , despair , condemnation , injustice and loss of dignity.
In 1994 , Galas collaborated with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones , a longtime admirer of the singer. The resultant record , " The Sporting Life " , while containing much of Galas's trademark vocal gymnastics , is probably the closest she has ever come to rock music , and is comprised of nearly all original material.

FROM DESPAIR TO WHERE

I write this alone on my bed
I've poisoned every room in the house
The place is quiet and so alone
Pretend there's something worth waiting for

There's nothing nice in my head
The adult world took it all away
I wake up with same spit in my mouth
I cannot tell if it is real or not

I try and walk in a straight line
An imitation of dignity
From despair to where
From despair to where

Outside open mouthed crowds
Pass each other as if they're drugged
Down pale corridors of routine
Where life falls unatoned

The weak kick like straw
Till the world means less and less
Words are never enough
Just cheap tarnished glitter

I try and walk in a straight line
An imitation of dignity
From despair to where
From despair to where

A cripple walks in a straight line
An imitation of dignity
From despair to where
From despair to where

Wasteland - Dream Drops & Singles

Wasteland was a five piece band from Athens that were formed in 1989.
They were defined by pop-goth melodies and romantic lyrics.
Their powerful live performances helped them create a number of devoted followers in. Dealing mostly with love, fear of isolation and the need for communication they released their first mini LP, “Dream Drops” in 1994. Using mandolins, melancholic guitar riffs, atmospheric keyboard sounds and passionate vocals.
They first appeared on the compilation “Divin’-Modern Tales from an ancient city” in 1993.
Wasteland had one more release in 1994, the 7'' single “Moon on Fire/Lonesome Yesterday“.
In 1996, the band released their last 7'' single,” Move / Stormy“.
They started recording a second album which was never released and they split a little later, in 1998. [tribe4mian]

All in one listen here

Blue Birds Refuse To Fly
************************
I feel so small since you went away
Afraid to face the sun, afraid to live another day
Strong wind blows and I'm hunted like a child
Spark turns to fire, maybe the flames will bring me back to life

And i need you like railtracks need the train, again...
And i need you like storm clouds need the rain, again...

If I can't have you anymore
If I can't love you anymore
Please listen to my last goodbye...
Blue birds refuse to fly

Standin' on a ship that sinks into a sea of lust
Missin' all those stars that used to shine over the mast
Hangin' on my yesterdays, seduced by my own past
Hangin' on my memories, for how much longer will they last?

And i need you like flowers need the spring, Love is King...
And i need you like church bells need to ring and sing...

If I can't have you anymore
If I can't love you anymore
Please listen to my last goodbye...
Blue birds refuse to fly
Goodbye.

Area : Arbeit Macht Frei ( Il lavoro rende liberi ) 1973

And the award for the album that took me the longest to get into goes to Area's debut studio album, Arbeit Macht Frei. Yes, this album has been in my life for years, but only recently did I finally understand and comprehend the madness of this record. The music on this thing is absolutely incredible, to say the least, and I can definitely understand why some people make the argument that this is the greatest Italian album of all time. From the excellent musicianship and extremely technical music to the meaning of the album art, everything about this album seems to be nearly perfect. I wish I could've gotten into this thing earlier because now I adore it! Moving on, I want to quickly shine light on their singer, Demetrio Stratos. He has some of the most memorable and unique vocals out of any Italian singers (or just singers overall) that I've listened to. He is seriously at the level of Francesco Di Giacomo when it comes to talent. His voice becomes its own instrument, and it just transforms this record in such a good way.
