THE METIC

With my mouth of a metic
of a wandering Jew , of a Greek shepherd
of a thief and of a vagrant

With my skin that rubbed
with the sun of all the summers
and all that wore underskirt

With my heart that knew how to
whistle as much as it suffered
without making storied for that
with my soul that no longer has
the least chance to greet
to avoid the purgatory

With my mouth of a metic
of a wandering Jew , of a Greek shepherd
and my hair with the four winds
I will come , my sweet prisoner
my soul mate , my source of life

I will come to drink your twenty years
and I'll become the Prince of blood
a dreamer or even a teenager
as you will like to choose
and we will make of everyday
all the eternity of love
that we will live till we die .

And we will make of everyday
all the eternity of love
that we will live till we die

String Driven Thing : Keep Yer ' And On It 1975

One of the finest bands signed to the Charisma label during its early-'70s heyday , Scotland's String Driven Thing originally formed as a trio in 1969 , led by the husband-and-wife team of Chris and Pauline Adams , plus percussionist John Mannion . Locally popular at the tail end of the 1960s , the band faded from view shortly after releasing a self-titled debut album in 1970 . They continued playing , however , with the lineup expanding to include bassist Colin Wilson .

The Slackers : Red Light 1997

The Slackers are a New York City band , formed in Brooklyn in 1991 . The band's sound is a mix of ska , rocksteady , reggae , dub , soul , garage rock , and jazz . The Slackers' notability is credited to their prolific career , tours of North America , Europe , and elsewhere , and signing to notable punk label Hellcat Records .

Redlight is an album by The Slackers , released on September 23 , 1997 (see 1997 in music) on Hellcat Records .

It solidified the Slacker's sound , with ska , reggae , and dub remaining prevalent . The track "Watch This" received airplay on college radio stations . The band's lineup was finally solidified (confused by the inclusivness of band photos in Better Late Than Never) . Now the Slackers brought in Glen Pine from Boston on Trombone . Jeremy Mushlin also debuted his vocal talents for the first time on Redlight , although it wouldn't be until The Question that he would exhibit his DJ style that he is known for .

John Campbell : A Man And His Blues 1988

John Campbell can speak about the blues because it is the music that defines him. On "One Believer" his electrifying Elektra Entertainment debut, he unleashes powerful, disturbing, exhilarating and ultimately life affirming down and and dirty blues. It's a sound and a fury born out of pain, joy, redemption and John's singular approach to age old tradition.

"When I was about 15 I used to drag race cars and bikes, I got into a real bad accident, and I was real messed up. I lost my right eye and had 5,000 stitches and surgery to hold my face together. I spent a lot of time at home recovering and it was during that time that I met the blues,"
John explains. "The feeling that the guitar gave me became different. I kind of withdrew inside myself and the guitar was the way I'd try and get in touch with my feelings. Shortly after that I quit school, caught a bus and started playing on the streets. Playing was my life's work. I knew that you didn't get a hold of this form when you were young."

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1952, John drifted between home and Texas from the age of 15, eventually moving to New York City five years ago. He picked up the guitar at an early age. "My grandmother played Hawaiian lap steel and I started playing it when I was almost three," he recounts. He began gigging professionally at the age of 13, playing a field parties and gradually moving on to the rough and tumble world of the clubs and roadhouses that lay between Houston and New Orleans .

Long live Rock ' n ' Roll

"I never sent a tape to a record company in my whole life, I was just a guitar player.
I've worked for this and I prayed for this" John says quietly. "So every day, I feel blessed to have the opportunity to go out and do it." - Elektra 8/91

John Campbell : One Believer 1991

Blues & Rhythm, May 1991 pg 25

John Campbell is a totally different kettle of fish - it's blues all the way from Texas (Lightnin Hopkins "Bluebird") through to Chicago (Snooky Pryor's "Judgment Day" and Elmore James "Sunnyland Train). Thirty-six year old Campbell originally hails from Shreveport, grew up on a diet of Lightnin Hopkins records, started on guitar as a youngster and eventually moved to Texas in his teens.

He played with Gatemouth Brown and Son Seals, but serious health problems caused an extended break from performing. Eventually, he got things going again and in New York met Ronnie Earl who was so impressed by what he heard that he decided to record Campbell, and the result is this CD. Produced by Earl, he also plays guitar on some cuts, and Muddy's ex-harpman Jerry Portnoy also plays on two sides.

Campbell is a brilliant guitarist (he plays acoustic fitted with pickup), a fine singer, very influenced by Lightnin Hopkins. Immediately obvious on one listen to "Going to Dallas" or "Bluebird." He is also confident in the ragtime style ("Deep River Rag"). On "Judgment Day" the vocal is by Darrell Nullisch, and Earl and Campbell alternate solos. Earl takes the lead on an acoustic version of "Sunnyland Train" and the set ends with a stunning version of Furry Lewis's "White Lightnin'". Four Campbell originals and five covers in this nicely balanced set of mainly Texas style blues - strongly recommended.

DEVIL IN MY CLOSET

I got the Devil in my closet,
And the wolf is at my door.
I got the Devil in my closet,
And the wolf is at my door.
What’s a man to do
When he can’t trust his woman no more?

She says she did no wrong,
And seeing him was no big thing.
She says she did no wrong,
And seeing him was no big thing.
She ain’t admitting nothing,
But I believe she spread her wings.

I touched her last night
and she rolled over in her sleep.
I pulled her close
and softly kissed her cheek.
But she whispered his name
as she pressed her chest to me.

I got the Devil in my closet,
And the Wolf is at my door.

To my pride, it’s very simple,
I’ll just pack and walk right out.
To my pride, it’s very simple,
I’ll just pack and walk right out.
But my heart begs me to stay
If there’s a shadow of a doubt.
