H . P . Lovecraft : By Enrique Breccia 2002

One of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century.
Stephen King called Lovecraft "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale."

Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island.

His father became acutely psychotic in a Chicago hotel room while on a business trip. He was placed in Butler Hospital, where he remained until his death in 1898.

It is unknown whether the younger Lovecraft was ever aware of the actual nature of his father's illness or its cause (syphilis), although his mother likely was, possibly having even received tincture of arsenic as "preventive medication".

When he was a little boy , his mother , was dressing him as a little girl with female clothes .

Lovecraft was a prodigy, reciting poetry at the age of three and writing complete poems by six.

His grandfather encouraged his reading , and his grandfather also stirred the boy's interest in the weird by telling him his own original tales of Gothic horror.

His mother, on the other hand, worried that these stories would upset the child.
Lovecraft was frequently ill as a child, at least some of which was certainly psychosomatic, although he attributed his various ailments to physical causes only.

Early speculation that he may have been congenitally disabled by syphilis passed on from father to mother to fetus has been ruled out. Due to his sickly condition and his undisciplined, argumentative nature, he barely attended school until he was eight years old, and then was withdrawn after a year.
Beginning in his early life, Lovecraft is believed to have suffered from night terrors,
a rare parasomnia disorder.

He believed himself to be assaulted at night by horrific "night gaunts."

Much of his later work is thought to have been directly inspired by these Terrors.

Lovecraft wrote some fiction as a youth but, from 1908 until 1913, his output was primarily poetry. During that time, he lived a hermit's existence, having almost no contact with anyone but his mother.

In 1919, after suffering from hysteria and depression for a long period of time, Lovecraft's mother was committed to Butler Hospital just like her husband before her.

They remained very close until her death on May 24, 1921, the result of complications from gall bladder surgery. Lovecraft was devastated by the loss.

A few weeks after his mother's death, Lovecraft attended an amateur journalist convention in Boston, Massachusetts, where he met Sonia Greene.
she was of Ukrainian-Jewish ancestry and seven years older than Lovecraft.

They married in 1924, and the couple moved to Brooklyn .

Lovecraft could not find work to support them both, so his wife moved to Cleveland for employment.

Lovecraft lived by himself in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn and came to dislike New York life intensely.

A few years later, Lovecraft and his wife, still living separately, agreed to an amicable divorce, which was never fully completed. He returned to Providence to live with his aunts during their remaining years.

The period after his return to Providence — the last decade of his life — was Lovecraft's most prolific.

In that time he produced almost all of his best-known short stories for the leading pulp publications of the day (primarily Weird Tales), as well as longer efforts, such as The Case of Charles Dexter Ward and At the Mountains of Madness.

He frequently revised work for other authors and did a large amount of ghost-writing, including "The Mound", "Winged Death", and "Under the Pyramids" (also known as "Imprisoned With the Pharaohs") (for Harry Houdini) and "The Diary of Alonzo Typer".

Lovecraft was diagnosed with cancer of the intestine, and he also suffered from Bright's disease and malnutrition . He lived in constant pain until his death on March 15, 1937, in Providence.

CTHULHU

The Cthulhu Mythos, also known as the Lovecraft Mythos, is a shared fictional universe created in the 1920s by H. P. Lovecraft.

The term was coined by Lovecraft's associate August Derleth,(August William Derleth (February 24, 1909 – July 4, 1971) was an American writer and anthologist.) and named after Cthulhu, a powerful fictional entity in Lovecraft's stories. It refers to a loose framework formed by common elements (such as places, names, or entities) that appear in more than one tale, adding continuity and depth to the works.

Cthulhu is regarded as the priest of the gods, while Dagon appears to be his subordinate. The lowest tier consists of a race of ocean-dwelling humanoids, the Deep Ones, serving Cthulhu and Dagon, and a pair of extraterrestrial races, the Elder Things (along with their slaves, the shoggoths) and the Mi-go.

Common themes in Lovecraft's fiction are the insignificance of humanity in the universe and the search for knowledge ending in disaster. Humans are often subject to powerful beings and other cosmic forces, but these forces are not so much malevolent as they are indifferent toward humanity.

AZAROTH

Lovecraft's central deities are Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth, both representing opposing cosmic principles. Azathoth, the "blind", "idiotic" ruler of the pantheon, occupies the literal center of the universe, whereas Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth's co-ruler, embodies the infinite, existing in all places and in all times.

YOG - SOTHOTH

Attending Azathoth at his court are the Other Gods, mysterious beings that dance mindlessly around Azathoth's throne in cadence to the piping of a demonic flute, and Nyarlathotep, the avatar and messenger of Azathoth and the Other Gods.

NYARLAHOTEP

Nyarlathotep is the only being that can interact intelligibly with human beings, though he often manifests himself in human form to disguise his true appearance. Despite his ability to interact, he lacks empathy for humanity, seeing humans as toys for his amusement or to serve the will of the gods.

NECRONOMICON

The Necronomicon is a fictional grimoire appearing in the stories by horror writer H. P. Lovecraft and his followers. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's 1924 short story "The Hound", written in 1922, though its purported author, the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft's "The Nameless City". Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them.

Lovecraft approved, believing such common allusions built up "a background of evil verisimilitude." Many readers have believed it to be a real work, with booksellers and librarians receiving many requests for it .

Enrique Breccia

Enrique Breccia, the son of one of the greatest Latino-American artists of all time, Alberto Breccia, drew his first work in 1968, when together with his father he illustrated La Vida del Che, a biography of the famous revolutionary Che Guevara written by Hector German Oesterheld. In 1972 he started his collaboration with the British publishing house Fleetway, drawing the comic book Spy 13 under a pseudonym, and later a series of war stories for the Italian magazine Linus.

His collaboration with writer Carlos Trillo began in 1976 with the comic El Buen Dios, immediately followed by Alvar Mayor, his most famous character with whom he entered the world comic book scene.

In 2002 he drew the graphic novel Lovecraft, about the life of writer H.P. Lovecraft written by Hans Rodionoff, for DC comics' Vertigo imprint. In 2005 he became the head artist for the Vertigo series Swamp Thing, drawing 22 issues till 2007.

The Astronauts - Peter Pan Hits The Suburbs (La Vida Es Un Mus) Reissue on Vinyl LP

*OUT NOW * Reissue on Vinyl LP
MUS44 THE ASTRONAUTS - Peter Pan Hits the Suburbs LP

Reissue of this long lost masterpice from 1981 originally released by Bulge / Genius records. The Astronauts were (and are, after close to 30 years and a history of lineup shifts only bested by The Fall) the definitive psych-punk ensemble, though even that title doesn't do 'em justice. Their sound culminates the post '77 punk dabblings of head forbears Twink (his 'Do it 77' single and The Rings' 'I wanna be free' platter), Nik Turner (the outstanding Inner City Unit and the 'punkier' late 70's bits of Hawkwind) and Daevid Allen's planet Gong (with fellow acid-punkers Here and Now) all woven in with an earlier Robert Wyatt / mellow candle-y psych folk vibe... While not sounding like any of those things at all. Get it? The album's range is gigantic: from dissonant punk a la Fall ('Everything stops for baby'), to epic progressive folk ('Protest song', 'Baby sings folk songs'), ditties ('Sod us'), hard-rock ('The Traveller'), pop ('How green was my valley'), garage / surf ('Still Talking'), industrial ('How long is a piece of string'), and set to arrangements that employ synths, flute, saxophone, and strays into progressive or even free-form / psychedelic sections. The icing on the cake is the mature statement of the lyrics, a cynical and bitter exploration of the lives of simple men, miles away from the generic horror / punk overtones that permeated most of alternative albums at the time.

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man: Out of Season: 2002

Beth Gibbons , lead singer of the important British alternative band Portishead,
is not so much mysterious as intensely private.

Born in 1965 into an Exeter farm family,
she embraced rural life fully,
forgoing college to continue doing farm work
and listening to music on a home stereo with her family.

As a 22-year-old in the late '80s, however,
she took a chance on becoming a singer by moving to the seaside town of Bristol.

It was while waiting to get on the dole that year
that she met her future Portishead partner Geoff Barrow,
who was also in a rough financial situation.
Prior to their meeting, Barrow was a studio hand at Bristol's Coach House

When Gibbons met Barrow,
he was looking to put together a trip-hop outfit of his own
and in need of a lyricist and vocalist.
With the addition of the local jazz guitarist Adrian Utley,
Portishead were born.

The band's best-known album, 1994's debut Dummy,
went on to win the Mercury Prize for Best British Album in 1995.

In addition to three well-received Portishead records,
Gibbons released her solo debut , the thoughtful "Out of Season" , in 2002.

MYSTERIES LYRICS

God knows how I adore life
When the wind turns on the shores lies another day
I cannot ask for more

When the time bell blows my heart
And I have scored a better day
Well nobody made this war of mine

And the moments that I enjoy
A place of love and mystery
I'll be there anytime

Oh mysteries of love
Where war is no more
I'll be there anytime

When the time bell blows my heart
And I have scored a better day
Well nobody made this war of mine

And the moments that I enjoy
A place of love and mystery
I'll be there anytime

Mysteries of love
Where war is no more
I'll be there anytime

ROMANCE LYRICS

You know what they say about romance
You know what they say about romance

Ever changing love that you can't
Keep on side a parking keel

Better the thought than the feeling
It's plain to see
All the things we suffer
From the the hands of humanity

But that ain't me
That ain't me
But that ain't me
That ain't me

And I know there's a god inside it
Should I love your key
Adorn you
And get inside

But that ain't me
That ain't me
But that ain't me

That ain't me

And I know I may come to doubt it
But if I ever wish
I wish we could all believe

That in this daylight world
Is a world
Where love can be
And I won't ever forget it
Cuz that ain't me

That ain't me
Cuz that ain't me
Well that ain't me

Info [Wiki]
Diafana Krina (Greek: Διάφανα Κρίνα, which means in English: Transparent Lilies) was a Greek rock group. It consisted of Thanos Anestopoulos (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano), Pantelis Rothostoglou (bass), Nikos Bardis (electric guitar, trumpet), Kyriakos Tsoukalas (electric guitar) and Tassos Machas (drums). Their special characteristic (apart from their distinct baritone voice of Anestopoulos) is that they set to music poems (most written by bassist Rodostoglou) rather than usual lyrics.

Diafana Krina were created in 1991. Their name stands for "transparent lilies" in Greek. In 1994, they released their first single 'Λιώνοντας μόνος-κάτω από το ηφαίστειο' (Greek for "Melting alone-under the volcano") by Wipe Out. They followed in 1996 with the LP 'Έγινε η απώλεια συνήθειά μας'. In 1997, they participated in the 'Rock of Gods' festival in Athens together with The Sisters of Mercy and New Model Army. In 1998, they released their second LP 'Κάτι σαράβαλες καρδιές' and performed in several concerts around Greece including acting as support for the Tindersticks Athens concert. In 2000, they released a single 'Είναι που όλα ήρθαν αργά' and album 'Ευωδιάζουν αγριοκέρασα οι σιωπές'. In 2001 they appeared in three concerts in the UK (London at Dingwalls, Manchester at The Roadhouse and Brighton at Concorde 2). In 2003, the LP 'Ο,τι απόμεινε απ' την ευτυχία' was released, followed by the 2005 instrumental LP 'Ο γύρος της μέρας σε 80 κόσμους' (Greek for "Around the day in 80 worlds", inspired by the title of Jules Verne's famous story Around the World in Eighty Days) which was released together with a book containing poetry and tales. The group busted-up at 1/6/2009, after an announcement in their official site, which was signed by all bandmates apart from Anestopoulos.

Αν το γουστάρετε, προτείνω να διαβάσετε το βιβλίο του Malcolm Lowry "Under the Volcano"

[http://www.books.gr]

JETHRO TULL - A PASSION PLAY  1973

A PASSION PLAY

"Do you still see me even here?"
(The silver cord lies on the ground.)
"And so I'm dead", the young man said
over the hill (not a wish away).

My friends (as one) all stand aligned
although their taxis came too late.
There was a rush along the Fulham Road.
There was a hush in the Passion Play.

Such a sense of glowing in the aftermath
ripe with rich attainments all imagined
sad misdeeds in disarray
the sore thumb screams aloud,
echoing out of the Passion Play.
All the old familiar choruses come crowding in a different key:
Melodies decaying in sweet dissonance.
There was a rush along the Fulham Road
into the Ever-passion Play.

And who comes here to wish me well?
A sweetly-scented angel fell.
She laid her head upon my disbelief

and bathed me with her ever-smile.
And with a howl across the sand
I go escorted by a band of gentlemen in leather bound
NO-ONE (but someone to be found).

All along the icy wastes there are faces smiling in the gloom.
Roll up roll down, Feeling unwound? Step into the viewing room.
The cameras were all around. We've got you taped; you're in the play.
Here's your I.D. (Ideal for identifying one and all.)
Invest your life in the memory bank; ours the interest and we thank you.
The ice-cream lady wets her drawers, to see you in the passion play.

Take the prize for instant pleasure, captain of the cricket team
public speaking in all weathers, a knighthood from a queen.

All of your best friends' telephones never cooled from the heat of your hand.
from your hand.....
There's a line in a front-page story, 13 horses that also-ran.
also ran.....
Climb in your old umbrella. Does it have a nasty tear in the dome?
in the dome.....
But the rain only gets in sometimes and the sun never leaves you alone,
you alone.....
you alone.....
you alone.....
you alone.....

Lover of the black and white it's your first night.
The Passion Play, goes all the way, spoils your insight.
Tell me how the baby's made, how the lady's laid,
why the old dog howls in sadness.

And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away
on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George
who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision.
(The examining body examined her body.)

Actor of the low-high Q, let's hear your view.
Peek at the lines upon your sleeves since your memory won't do.
Tell me: how the baby's graded, how the lady's faded,
why the old dogs howl with Madness.

All of this and some of that's the only way to skin the cat.
And now you've lost a skin or two, you're for us and we for you.
The dressing room is right behind, We've got you taped, you're in the play.
How does it feel to be in the play?
How does it feel to play the play?
How does it feel to be the play?

Man of passion rise again, we won't cross you out:
for we do love you like a son, of that there's no doubt.
Tell us: is it you who are here for our good cheer?
Or are we here for the glory, for the story, for the gory satisfaction
of telling you how absolutely awful you really are?

There was a rush along the Fulham Road.
There was a hush in the Passion Play.

This is the story of the Hare who lost his spectacles.

Owl loved to rest quietly whilst no one was watching.
Sitting on a fence one day, he was surprised when suddenly a kangaroo ran close by.
Now this may not seem strange, but when Owl overheard Kangaroo whisper to no one in particular,
"The hare has lost his spectacles," well, he began to wonder.

Presently, the moon appeared from behind a cloud and there, lying on the grass was hare.
In the stream that flowed by the grass a newt.
And sitting astride a twig of a bush a bee.

Ostensibly motionless, the hare was trembling with excitement,
for without his spectacles he appeared completely helpless.
Where were his spectacles? Could
someone have stolen them? Had he mislaid them? What was he to do?

Bee wanted to help, and thinking he had the answer began:
"You probably ate them thinking they were a carrot."
"No!" interrupted Owl, who was wise.
"I have good eye-sight, insight, and foresight.
How could an intelligent hare make such a silly mistake?"
But all this time, Owl had been sitting on the fence, scowling!

A Kangaroo were hopping mad at this sort of talk.
She thought herself far superior in intelligence to the others.
She was their leader, their guru. She had the answer:
"Hare, you must go in search of the optician."
But then she realized that Hare was completely helpless without his spectacles.
And so, Kangaroo loudly proclaimed, "I can't send Hare in search of anything!"
"You can guru, you can!" shouted Newt.
"You can send him with Owl."
But Owl had gone to sleep.
Newt knew too much to be stopped by so small a problem
"You can take him in your pouch."
But alas, Hare was much too big to fit into Kangaroo's pouch.

All this time, it had been quite plain to hare that the others knew nothing about spectacles.

As for all their tempting ideas, well Hare didn't care.
The lost spectacles were his own affair.
And after all, Hare did have a spare a-pair.
A-pair.

THE END

We sleep by the ever-bright hole in the door,
eat in the corner, talk to the floor,
cheating the spiders who come to say "Please",
(politely). They bend at the knees.
Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs.

Old gentlemen talk of when they were young
of ladies lost, of erring sons.
Lace-covered dandies revel (with friends)
pure as the truth, tied at both ends.
Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs.
Scented cathedral spire pointed down.
We pray for souls in Kentish Town.
A delicate hush the gods, floating by
wishing us well, pie in the sky.

God of ages, Lord of Time, mine is the right, right to be wrong.
Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs.
Jack rabbit mister spawn a new breed
of love-hungry pilgrims (no bodies to feed).
Show me a good man and I'll show you the door.
The last hymn is sung and the devil cries "More."

Well, I'm all for leaving and that being done,
I've put in a request to take up my turn
in that forsaken paradise that calls itself "Hell"
where no-one has nothing and nothing is- well -meaning fool,
pick up thy bed and rise up from your gloom smiling.
Give me your hate and do as the loving heathen do.

Colours I've none dark or light, red, white or blue.
Cold is my touch (freezing).

Summoned by name - I am the overseer over you.
Given this command to watch o'er our miserable sphere.
Fallen from grace, called on to bring sun or rain.
Occasional corn from my oversight grew.

Fell with mine angels from a far better place,
offering services for the saving of face.
Now you're here, you may as well admire
all whom living has retired from the benign reconciliation.
Legends were born surrounding mysterious lights
seen in the sky (flashing).
I just lit a fag then took my leave in the blink of an eye.
Passionate play join round the maypole in dance
(primitive rite) (wrongly).
Summoned by name I am the overseer over you.

Flee the icy Lucifer. Oh he's an awful fellow!
What a mistake! I didn't take a feather from his pillow.
Here's the everlasting rub: neither am I good or bad.
I'd give up my halo for a horn and the horn for the hat I once had.
I'm only breathing. There's life on my ceiling.
The flies there are sleeping quietly.
Twist my right arm in the dark.
I would give two or three for
one of those days that never made
impressions on the old score.
I would gladly be a dog barking up the wrong tree.
Everyone's saved we're in the grave.
See you there for afternoon tea.

Time for awaking the tea lady's making
a brew-up and baking new bread.
Pick me up at half past none
there's not a moment to lose.
There is the train on which I came.
On the platform are my old shoes.
Station master rings his bell.
Whistles blow and flags wave.
A little of what you fancy does you good (Or so it should).
I thank everybody
for making me welcome.
I'd stay but my wings have just dropped off.

Hail! Son of kings make the ever-dying sign
cross your fingers in the sky for those about to BE.
There am I waiting along the sand.

Cast your sweet spell upon the land and sea.

Magus Perde, take your hand from off the chain.
Loose a wish to still, the rain, the storm about to BE.
Here am I (voyager into life).
Tough are the soles that tread the knife's edge.
Break the circle, stretch the line, call upon the devil.
Bring the gods, the gods' own fire.
In the conflict revel.

The passengers upon the ferry crossing, waiting to be born,
renew the pledge of life's long song rise to the reveille horn.
Animals queueing at the gate that stands upon the shore
breathe the ever-burning fire that guards the ever-door.

Man - son of man - buy the flame of ever-life
(yours to breathe and breath the pain of living): living BE!
Here am I! Roll the stone away
from the dark into ever-day.

There was a rush along the Fulham Road
into the Ever-passion Play.
