Various: An Overdose Of Heavy Psych (Authentic Way Cool Sixties Artifacts) 1996

What sets this apart from the many other similar '60s garage-psych releases is the extremeness of the

THE  BOSTON  TEA  PARTY

music. Tracks collected here feature grungier guitars, slower or varied tempos and darker and more ominous atmosphere than earlier punk singles...and more fuzz and heavier feedback (even the occasional oscillator). These tracks were typically cut later than many of the other garage-band compilation series, and influences are second generation bands like Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, Love, and the Stooges. While poppier sounds are eschewed on these sides, according to the liner notes these heavier slabs are the flip sides of lighter material.

THE  CRYSTAL  RAIN

If the ballads on garage comps are the ones you skip over, by all means pick up a copy of this collection...you won't be disappointed. An extra bonus are six caveman-stomping cuts by the Boneheaded 31 Flavors, originally from two low-budget psych-sploitation albums on the Crown label. The Dose series along with the 2 Calico Wall volumes are compiled by Erik Lindgren (of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic/ Space Negros fame).

ORANGE  WEDGE

Those comps are so impeccably sequenced, the song selection so faultless, they're a wonder to behold. As good as the Nuggets/Pebbles were, Lindgren's comps fly above and beyond. What Tim Warren is for 60s punk, is what Lindgren is for psychedelic music. After the heavy psych bliss of the first three tracks, the tunes shift towards the garage spectrum (peaking with The Fumin' Humins). The psychedelic sequence from 6 to 9 is particularly mind-blowing, maybe the pinnacle of the series' 4 volumes (and that's saying a lot).

THE  FIREBIRDS

What follows is a streak of garage tunes, some of which are amazing (Search Your Soul), and then the epitome of garage/psych in You're in My Mind and Salem Witch Trail. Then it's heavy psych all the way, certainly the longest and heaviest streak of the series. The Glass Sun's Silence of the Morning is my favorite, but as far as sheer protometal heaviness, no one in the whole 60s rivals No Tomorrows from The Firebirds/The 31 Flavors' face-melting suite.

THE  31 FLAVORS

Once again, compiler Erik Lindgren has outdone himself, pulling all the stops for this outrageous collection of top tier psychedelic singles. I may be slightly prejudiced, as I own most of these records myself, but there can be little denying that they represent some of the best the genre has to offer. My only complaint is the total lack of noise reduction technology used here.

TWENTIETH  CENTURY  ZOO

One other very interesting aspect to this comp, is that this is the ONLY place to find the unseparated, original version of "Free Bass", "Free Fuzz", and "Free Drums", which were, of course, recorded as one track originally, but split into the three titles listed for inclusion on the Firebirds and 31 Flavors albums released in 1969.

GLASS  SUN

They are manually edited together, taken from original vinyl and not master tapes, so it's not a perfectly seamless edit. Apparently, the 31 flavors album had slightly different stereo biasing, which is noticeable when faded from the Firebirds track. And again, the vinyl copy used for this purpose sounds particularly noisy. But these are minor complaints, and well worth putting up with for the collection as a whole. Whew! Pretty amazingly consistently fabulous, in my opinion.

Died Pretty: 4 Albums

Died Pretty (sometimes The Died Pretty) was an Australian indie rock band. They formed in Sydney in early 1984 and achieved moderate success in their home country and recorded nine full-length albums

before they parted ways in 2002, however the band still regularly perform reunion concerts. Died Pretty's 1990s albums, Doughboy Hollow, Trace and Sold, appeared on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Albums Charts but they had more success on the alternative scene. According to rock music historian Ian McFarlane they "unashamedly plundered rock's past to arrive at an original sound that was always passionate, atmospheric and uplifting ... produced some of the most inspirational rock music heard in Australia".

Various: A Deadly Dose Of Wylde Psych (Authentic Way Cool Sixties Artifacts) 2003

A Deadly Dose of Wylde Psych is another wild compilation from Arf Arf that digs up 26 tracks of long

TEA  COMPANY

lost American psychedelic acid rock from the mid-'60s. These tracks were recorded during an era when garage bands switched from "Louie Louie" and "Gloria" to a darker, yet no less inept, age of acid-influenced sludge. Here's the 4th installment of our highly acclaimed Dose series. Trip on out to 26 excessive tracks (over 78 minutes) of sparkling '60s psychedelic acid reign. Presented here is elusive American psychedelic rock at it's best'from the savage to the sublime, massive to the mesmerizing, and futuristic to flashbacks.

During the 78 minutes of Deadly Dose, listeners are introduced to beyond obscure bands with names
MASS  TEMPER

like Chocolate Moose, Peacepipe, Lime Frost, Nite Watchmen, and Sweet Cherry. Most of these tracks sound like a combination of the Music Machine or Count Five with Barry Melton or Jorma Kaukonen on electric guitar at their most hallucinogenic.

The last part of the seminal Dose comp quartet, maybe the best US psych series ever. This one starts off
NITE  WATCHMEN

with the super fuzzy B Side of The Sound Apparatus single (the first side is the majestic One from the Aliens-Psychos comp), and never lets go, with one amazing song after the other.

Again, some garage tracks here and there (good ones too; Blue Creed - Need a Friend, Sweet Cherry -
WILDWOOD

Funny Things Floating - harsh vocals!, The Leather Pages - Accept Me for Who I Am, The Chocolate Moose - Take a Ride the till now uncompiled It Had to Be You). The heavy sequence of Peacepipe and The Moon-Dawgs will take your breath away. Some songs verge on the proto-metal MC5 territory (The Pawnbrokers - Realize, Finch - Nothing in the Sun). Things get hella groovy with Mid-Winter's Afternoon and Glass Road. And the heaviness resumes with Mother Samwell and Roxanne.

The staple Plastic People makes an appearance . Kickass garage version of Rising Sun and an ultra
PEACEPIPE

heavy 7 & 7 is. And beautiful moody psych tracks like Lime Frost - Post Bellum Blues, The Tea Company - Come and Have Some Tea With Me, and The Christian Brothers - Feeling Bad. Can't forget the trippy but uncredited wonder Angel Angel Down We Go (with soulful backing vox) and The Moon-Dawgs - Keep On Pushing. Truthful to the series' norm, it packs a heavy rock punch at the end, and finishes with the wacky Color Me Columbuth.

When it comes to psych comps, this may just be the mother of them all! 26 tracks, and virtually every
SOUND  APPARATUS

one a top-tier masterpiece. It's difficult to point to any real faves, as they're all so good, but one worth mentioning is the closing cut. For many years, the only folks who got to hear this even cooler version of the A-side, were those who had the original single. It's doubtful it will ever be compiled anywhere else, so consider it the cherry on top of this sundae. And it comes with a booklet containing band info! Kudos to Arf Arf for a superlative release. Highly recommended!

Mark Lanegan ( 25 November 1964 - 22 February 2022) + The Gutter Twins + Isobel Campbell

Mark William Lanegan (November 25, 1964 – February 22, 2022) was an American singer, songwriter, and poet. During an interview with The Rocket in 1996, he said that he drove a combine harvester when he was younger. He was of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh descent. He said that he developed an alcohol use disorder by age 12, and began using drugs heavily by the age of 18, having already been arrested and sentenced to one year's imprisonment for drug-related crimes.

Lanegan collaborated with various artists throughout his career. In the 1990s, he and Kurt Cobain recorded an album of Lead Belly covers that was ultimately never released. He also joined Layne Staley and Mike McCready in the band Mad Season, and formed the alternative rock group The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli in 2003, as well as contributing to releases by Moby, Bomb the Bass, Soulsavers, Tinariwen, The Twilight Singers, Manic Street Preachers, and Unkle, among others.

As a teenager he had numerous brushes with the law for drug and alcohol offences. A notorious drunk

by the time he was 12, he admitted that he had started taking heroin as a way to beat his alcohol problem. An obituary in The Guardian by Stevie Chick remembered him as "one of his generation's most soulful singers". In Variety, music writer Chris Morris described him as "impassioned" and "adventurous".

First becoming prominent as the lead singer for the early grunge band Screaming Trees, he was also

known as a member of Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins.
He released 12 solo studio albums, as well as three collaboration albums with Isobel Campbell and two with Duke Garwood. He was known for his baritone voice, which was described as being "as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather" and has been compared to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave.

Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington by vocalist

Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel was replaced by Barrett Martin in 1991.
Screaming Trees became known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, Malfunkshun, among others. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements.

Thus Screaming Trees were formed in 1984, and they released their debut album, Clairvoyance, in

1986. The band built a following on the indie circuit with their raw, punk-charged songs, but it was not until 1992 that they broke through to a wide audience when their song Nearly Lost You was used in the movie Singles and became a hit on the US alternative airplay and mainstream rock charts. This was from their sixth album, Sweet Oblivion, with Screaming Trees now signed to Epic, having been with the independent label SST.

Lanegan’s stint with Queens of the Stone Age began after he struck up a friendship with the band’s

founder, Josh Homme, while he toured with Screaming Trees as an extra guitarist. Lanegan was a permanent member for a time, then enjoyed a friendly arrangement as a part-time contributor. This eventually ended by mutual consent. “It was too easy,” Lanegan confessed. “I needed to do something else.”

In April 2004, Lanegan released an EP with former Belle & Sebastian vocalist Isobel Campbell, titled

Time Is Just the Same. They would later release a single entitled "Ramblin' Man" for their collaboration album Ballad of the Broken Seas. Campbell wrote and recorded the majority of the album's tracks in Glasgow, with Lanegan adding vocals in Los Angeles.

The Gutter Twins was a collaboration between Lanegan and Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers vocalist
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

Greg Dulli.
Working on a collaborative album since at least 2003, the pair first played as The Gutter Twins in Rome in September2005. Saturnalia was released on March 4, 2008, on Sub Pop, a label both Dulli and Lanegan had worked with before. The duo's first tour commenced on February 14, 2008, in New York City and continued in March and April throughout Europe and the United States.

Mark William Lanegan, singer, songwriter and author, born 25 November 1964; died 22

February 2022.
The death of Mark Lanegan, the former vocalist with the bands Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, at the age of 57, feels painfully premature, but he had been walking a tightrope for most of his life. Last year, Covid-19 rendered him deaf, unable to walk and frequently comatose; he wrote a terrifying account of the experience in Devil in a Coma (2021).

MARK LANEGAN - WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST 1994

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is the second solo album by former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan. The album builds upon the roots music foundation that Lanegan had established with his debut The Winding Sheet.

MARK LANEGAN - HAS GOD SEEN MY SHADOW? AN ANTHOLOGY (1989 - 2011) 2014

An Anthology 1989-2011 is a compilation that presents a useful overview of Lanegan's solo work, pulling representative tracks from his first six albums,  from The Winding Sheet to 2004's Bubblegum, along with a pair of rare single sides and a bonus disc that includes 12 previously unreleased

performances. While the instrumental approach and the sophistication of these songs shift as the album goes along (especially on the first part, which largely moves backwards through Lanegan's chronology), the theme and tone remain remarkably consistent, as Lanegan ponders his soul and the earthly circumstances that contain him while languid melodies drift by, and his voice hits a richly emotional chord without sinking into melodrama. Has God Seen My Shadow covers a lot of familiar ground, but the 12 unreleased tracks amount to an album's worth on unheard pleasures, and if you've never been introduced to Lanegan's music, this is beautiful, challenging stuff for those dark nights of the soul.

ISOBEL CAMPBELL AND MARK LANEGAN - HAWK 2010

Hawk is the third collaborative studio album by Scottish indie pop singer Isobel Campbell and American alternative rock musician Mark Lanegan, released on 24 August 2010 on V2 Records.

Recorded throughout the United Kingdom and the United States, Hawk features a number of guest musicians, including folk singer Willy Mason, bassist Bill Wells and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. Isobel Campbell (born 27 April 1976) is a Scottish singer, songwriter and cellist. She rose to prominence at age nineteen as a member of the indie pop band Belle & Sebastian, but left the group to pursue a solo career, first as The Gentle Waves, and later under her own name. She later collaborated with singer Mark Lanegan on three albums. Her latest studio album, There Is No Other, was released in 2020.
