Various: D.I.Y - (1993 Compilation Series) (US & UK Power Pop & Punk Scene 1975 - 1983) - Original Release 9 CD

Released in 1993, Rhino Records D.I.Y. Series is a nine-disc set that covered the British and American power-pop and Punk scene of the mid 1970's to the early 1980's.

Rhino Records started as a record store in 1973 in Westwood California, U.S.A., founded by Richard

Foos. The first recording was released in 1975, "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer which was a small success. In 1985 the label made a distribution deal with Capitol Records, which lasted until 1992. As part of the deal, they had access to the Capitol back catalog, and they started releasing reissues of the old Capitol albums. In addition, in 1989, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels. In 1992, when the deal with Capitol was ending, Rhino got an offer from Time-Warner. By entering this deal, half of the label was sold to Time-Warner, and WEA became the new distributor of the label. Warner put Rhino in charge of reissuing the Atlantic back catalog. In 1998, Time-Warner bought the remaining 50% of the label, but returned the record store back to Richard Foos.

Currently Rhino Records operates as a part of the Rhino Entertainment Company, which is a part of the Warner Music Group. The label specializes in reissues, compilations and anthologies.

This series provides an exceptional summary of what was happening musically between 1975-1983 in pop music.

Conspicuous by their absence are groups like Talking Heads, The Clash, and Elvis Costello & The Attractions, but this was chiefly due to contractual issues that fell upon Rhino.

Few of the groups featured in Rhino’s D.I.Y series ever achieved main stream acceptance or success, but all helped to facilitate the shape of today’s music.

As a historical document, the D.I.Y series provides a snapshot of the chaotic, but stimulating beginnings of punk and new wave.

Throughout the nine disc series, power-pop and punk diamond in the roughs are featured by undervalued artists such as The Nerves, Pezband, The Undertones, Chris Stamey & The db’s, The Beat, and The Motels.

Although most of the artists featured in the D.I.Y have fallen into dusty album crates of obscurity, the D.I.Y series also features popular artists such as The Jam, Blondie, XTC, Nick Lowe, The Germs, The Romantics, Stiff Little Fingers, and The Buzzcocks.

Today, the Rhino D.I.Y series is out of print, virtually absent from record stores, and difficult to

find online. Maybe You can find the D.I.Y series online, but many of the MP3 rips are of poor fidelity. In this post, here are the first 3 CDs. Coming soon all the CDs.
