The Soft Machine : Third 1970

Third is a 1970 double LP by Soft Machine, with each side of the original vinyl consisting of a single long composition. Its music explores the emerging jazz fusion of the type present on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, which was released in the same month.

Third marks the most major of Soft Machine's several shifts in musical genre over their career, completing their transition from psychedelic music to jazz, and is a significant milestone of the Canterbury scene, featuring interplay between the band's personnel: Mike Ratledge on keyboards, Robert Wyatt on drums, Hugh Hopper on bass and newest member Elton Dean on saxophone.

Lyn Dobson appears on saxophone and flute on "Facelift", recorded while he was a full member of the band (then a quintet), although he is credited as an additional performer.

Jimmy Hastings (brother of Pye Hastings from Caravan) makes substantial contributions on flute and clarinet on "Slightly All The Time", free-jazz violinist Rab Spall (then a bandmate of Wyatt's in the part-time ensemble Amazing Band) is heard on the coda to "Moon In June", and Nick Evans (a member of the band during its short-lived septet incarnation) makes a very brief appearance on trombone in "Out-Bloody-Rageous".

In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock (2005), the album came #20 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".

In 2007 the album was re-issued on CD by Sony BMG with a second disc comprising a complete live album,

Live at the Proms 1970, which had been previously released by a small independent company called Reckless Records in 1988. This album was recorded at The BBC Proms in Royal Albert Hall in Westminster, London, for BBC Radio Three on 13 August 1970. The band's performance, opening for the BBC Symphony Orchestra , marked the first time that a popular-music band played at the classical festival.

"Facelift" is the most radical track.

The version on the album was recorded live at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, 4 January 1970 (the first by the quintet version of the band), with a brief section from the Mothers Club, Birmingham, 11 January 1970, and some recordings from the 1969 Spaced project.

While a large part of the finished product is essentially a live recording, parts involve tape collage and speeding up, slowing down, looping and backwards playing of tapes, with one instance where two different treatments of the same basic riff (one from the live concert, the other, at half speed, from Spaced) are heard simultaneously.

Most memorable is the ending, where the main theme is heard backwards.
At the time of the Croydon concert, "Facelift" typically lasted up to 30 minutes, expanded with solo improvisations and showcases by Lyn Dobson on flute, vocals, harmonica and sitar.

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER

"There must be some kinda way out of here"
Said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief"

"Businessmen, they, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth"

"No reason to get excited"
The thief, he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke"

"But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late"

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too

Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl,

All along the watchtower
All along the watchtower

SLOW TRAIN COMING

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions,
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon?
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

I had a woman down in Alabama,
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic,
She said, "Boy, without a doubt, have to quit your mess and straighten out,
You could die down here, be just another accident statistic."
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

All that foreign oil controlling American soil,
Look around you, it's just bound to make you embarrassed.
Sheiks walkin' around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings,
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more,
You can't rely no more to be standin' around waitin'
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turnin' over in his grave,
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters,
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency,
All non-believers and men stealers talkin' in the name of religion
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it.
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions,
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it.
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talkin' boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothin' I could do to stop it,
I don't care about economy, I don't care about astronomy
But it sure do bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets,
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Les Negresses Vertes : La Grand Deballage 2005 (Best Of )

Les Négresses Vertes, formed in 1987 , are a French music group who are best described as a fusion of world music and some aspects of alternative rock . Their particular musical influences were Gypsy music , Punk rock (Gypsy punk) , Algerian raï , Mediterranean and South American music and French café music .

Their tracks often feature acoustic guitar and accordion , as well as some tracks containing many other 'traditional' instruments such as piano and brass . Their style is fairly upbeat and energetic on the majority of their tracks , with unusual rhythms , vocals delivered with a generous dose of zeal and vibrant energy , and accompaniment melodies ranging from lilting and distant to eccentric and fast-paced . These two factors give many of their pieces a strong sense of direction.

Formed in 1987 , Les Négresses Vertes arose from the alternative music scene in Paris . The original line-up included singer Helno (born Noël Rota in Paris , December 25, 1963 - January 22, 1993 , also known as Helno Rota de Lourcqua) , Jo Roz (also known as l'Ami Ro; real name Joe Ruffier des Aimes) (piano) , Stéfane Mellino (guitar) , Jean-Marie Paulus (bass) , Gaby (drums) , Matthias Canavese (accordion) , Michel Ochowiak (trumpet) , Abraham Sirinix (also known as Abraham Braham) (trombone) and Iza Mellino (backing vocals) .

The original members were a group of friends , many of whom had not played their instruments before forming the band . The group's name translates as "green black women" . It arose from abuse hurled at them at one of their first concerts .

The insult is a comparison to the kitsch art of Vladimir Tretchikoff . They were initially signed to the independent Off The Track label , and released the punk protest song "200 Ans D'Hypocrisie" in response to their country's French Revolution bicentennial celebrations .

Screaming Lord Sutch : Story

David Edward Sutch (10 November 1940 – 16 June 1999), also known as Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow or simply Screaming Lord Sutch, was an English musician and aspirant politician.
During the 1960s, Screaming Lord Sutch was known for his horror-themed stage show, dressing as Jack the Ripper, pre-dating the shock rock antics of Alice Cooper. Accompanied by his band, The Savages, he started by coming out of a black coffin.
Despite self-confessed lack of vocal talent, he released horror-themed singles during the early to mid-'60s, the most popular "Jack the Ripper", covered live and on record by garage rock bands including the White Stripes, The Black Lips and The Horrors for their debut album, Strange House.

Sutch's album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends was named in a 1998 BBC poll as the worst album of all time

For his follow-up, Hands of Jack the Ripper, Sutch assembled British rock celebrities for a concert at the Carshalton Park Rock 'n' Roll Festival. The show was recorded (though only Sutch knew), and it was released to the surprise of the musicians. Musicians on the record included Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) Matthew Fisher (keyboard) Carlo Little (drums) Keith Moon (drums) Noel Redding (bass) and Nick Simper (bass).

In the Rolling Stones song "Get Off of My Cloud", the guy who shows up "All dressed up just like a Union Jack" was Lord Sutch uninvited in Mick Jagger's room.

He couldn't properly be considered part of the British Invasion he never had a hit in the U.S. or the U.K. but Screaming Lord Sutch laid some unheralded groundwork for the phenomenon.

With a rock & horror act based to a large degree on Screamin' Jay Hawkins, David "Lord" Sutch was one of the first genuine rock & roll longhairs, and his bands employed such sterling instrumentalists as Jimmy Page , Jeff Beck , Ritchie Blackmore , Nicky Hopkins , and Mitch Mitchell before they became famous.

Sutch suffered from depression and committed suicide by hanging on 16 June 1999, following the death of his mother the previous year.

JACK THE RIPPER

Huh-uh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh-uh, aaaaaaaah!
Wuaaaaah
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

There's a man who walks the streets of London late at night
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
With a little black bag that's oh-so tight
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
He's got a big black cloak hangin' down his back
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
Well, that's a one big cat I just a hate to fight
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

When he walks down the streets
To every girl he meets, he says, is your name Mary Blood?
Uaaaaaaah!

The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

When she walks down the streets, he's never far behind
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
With his little black bag and his one tracked mind
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
Well, he nearly catches up when the lights go down
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
'Cause that's the time he starts his dirty, uh, chop-around
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

When he walks down the streets
To every girl he meets, he says, is your name Mary Blood?
Uaaaaaaah!

The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

Scotland Yard'll never catch him, 'cause he's a much too clever
He's much too clever
Mm, but if they do, man, they'll get: The Ripper - yeah!

The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

Well, the streets of London kinda never safe
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
Whenever Jack The Ripper ever shows his face
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
So, you pretty little girlies, take a-my advice
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper
And don't walk the streets of London late at night
The Ripper, Jack The Ripper

When he walks down the streets
To every girl he meets, he says, is your name Mary Blood?
Uaaaaaaah!

The Hellacopters : Rock ' n ' Roll is Dead 2005

Just why would an album be titled Rock & Roll Is Dead when the contents within are good old-fashioned rock & roll?
Undoubtedly , it's because one of Sweden's most popular rock acts , the Hellacopters , is displeased with the state of rock music . So it would be a highly logical guess that the title is aimed at all the homogenized rock acts running amok on the charts .
While most "retro rockers" have no problem replicating the sonics of yesteryear , it's when it comes to penning memorable tracks like their heroes that they usually run into a stumbling block . But the Hellacopters are one of the exceptions as evidenced here by such standouts as "Monkeyboy," the very Stonesy "Leave It Alone," and "Murder on My Mind." And as with most modern-day garage revivalists , the Hellacopters can't resist slipping in a few "bash and wail" numbers as well ("Bring It on Home," "Put Out the Fire," etc.).

EVERYTHING IS ON TV

I have a TV screen of some 32 inches
TV dinner and an easy chair
From where I view a disaster
And switch the channel fast
And thank my lucky star I wasn't there
The world's in a hurry but I don't have to worry
There's a movie on with a happy end
I've seen it before but I can see it some more
So I don't have to go out and pretend

No I don't have to go out
I'll just stay inside - it doesn't bother me
I have all I need because everything is on TV

I can pay to get heard or to get the last word
Wire money to some charity
While I do as I please and bake in my own grease
I better keep my conscience clean
The world's in a hurry but I don't have to worry
I got my virtue and I got my vice
I got bedsores - aching ligaments galore
Now that's a tiny sacrifice

No I don't have to go out
I'll just stay inside - it keeps me company
I have all I need because everything is on TV
Everything is on TV
Everything is on TV

Deep Forest : IV World Mix II 1999

Innovatively fusing traditional ethnic musics with state-of-the-art rhythms, the work of Deep Forest was best typified by their 1993 smash "Sweet Lullaby," which brought together the contemporary sounds of ambient techno with the haunting voices of the Pygmies of the central African rain forest.
The project was primarily the work of the French keyboardists and programmers Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez; after the latter returned from Africa with boxes of records he'd picked up across the continent, he and Mouquet began sampling the native sounds for use with their atmospheric dance tracks, and with the aid of producer Dan Lacksman, their eponymous debut LP appeared in 1993.

Propelled by the international hit "Sweet Lullaby," Deep Forest was a surprise success; Mouquet and Sanchez soon began work on a follow-up, this time exploring such areas as Mongolia, India and Hungary, recording several tracks with singer Marta Sebestyen. The resulting album, Boheme, appeared in 1995; the third Deep Forest record, Comparsa, followed in 1998, with Live in Japan appearing a year later.
In 2000 the duo recorded a soundtrack, Pacifique, to the French film Le Prince du Pacifique. Deep Forest returned in 2002 with its next proper studio album,
( all music )

DEEP FOREST

Somewhere,
Deep in the jungle,
Are living some little men and women,
They are our past,
And maybe,
Maybe they are our future...

SWEET LULLABY

The lyrics are from the Solomon Islands (small islands north of Australia).
The Baegu lullaby heard in Sweet Lullaby is from Northern Malaita (Solomon Islands) recorded by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp.
The song is called Rorogwela and is sung by Afunakwa.

The lullaby is about a young child crying because his parents are not around. In response his older brother sings this song to comfort, as well as tell him the reality, with an appeal for his deceased parents to protect this child in the land of the living (local ancient belief is that the dead care for loved ones they left behind).

Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place

Little brother, little brother even in the gardens
This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden,
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us

Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
