The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical outfit led by frontman Anton Newcombe. Their
early music was in a shoegaze style; following their debut album, Methodrone, the group's sound transitioned to a broader style of psychedelic rock, incorporating styles such as garage rock, folk rock and, later, electronica into their sound. The act continue to experiment with musical styles.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band has had over 40
members since then, but its driving force and main songwriter is Anton Newcombe. Other prominent members have included Matt Hollywood, Dean Taylor, Jeff Davies, Brian Glaze, and Joel Gion. Their sound is heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, but also carries influences from shoegaze, jangle pop, garage rock, and lo-fi genres.
Multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member who has stayed
with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning, when it was founded by Newcombe, tambourine player Joel Gion (who stayed with him the longest), and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Matt Hollywood.
Current long-term members include Collin Hegna (bass), Frankie Teardrop (guitar, noise, etc), and Dan
Allaire (percussion). Long-time guitarist Ricky Rene Maymi was recently replaced by Irina Yaikowsky for a short tour, who was in turn, replaced by Ricky Rene Maymi.
Much has been made of the fact that Newcombe is head strong and has just one vision in mind: his own. However, many of the musicians who quit his band have stayed in his orbit and continue working
with him in some capacity. Newcombe was, at one point, a drummer in Hecksher's Warlocks. Campanella produces or engineers many of the records on Newcombe's record label, the Committee to Keep Music Evil and has also been on the last 2 highly successful European tours, playing keyboards and on occasion, guitar. Gion is forever showing back up shaking the tambourine at BJM shows. Even the Dandy Warhols appear to have buried the hatchet with Newcombe, as he joined them onstage at Lollapalooza in July of 2005.
The band announced the release of a new studio album, tentatively titled My Bloody Underground,
which was released in 2008. On September 3, 2007, the band released rough recordings from the album for download from their website. Music videos of the songs on the album have also been released, including a music video compilation DVD entitled 'Book of Days'. Songs from Brian Jonestown Massacre were specially adapted for use in the score to the critically acclaimed independent film, "Four Eyed Monsters."
During the early part of the global pandemic, the band remained relatively quiet, releasing only the
2021 single "Before You Forget." A year later, Newcombe announced he had two full-length albums finished and released Fire Doesn't Grow on Trees in June 2022. Originally slated for release a few months later, BJM's next set, Your Future Is Your Past, eventually came out in February 2023. A surprisingly resilient collection, it was built around bootstrapping anthems of empowerment.

The album was produced by Anton Newcombe and Rob Campanella with additional mixing by Courtney Taylor. The front cover features American independent film director Jim Jarmusch. Incidentally, The Brian Jonestown Massacre's song "Not if You Were the Last Dandy on Earth" appears on the soundtrack to his film Broken Flowers.

3. MY BLOODY UNDERGROUND 2008
My Bloody Underground is the tenth studio album by American psychedelic rock band the Brian Jonestown Massacre, released on April 15, 2008[6] on A Records, a label set up by the band's leader, Anton Newcombe. My Bloody Underground was recorded at first in Liverpool, England in August of
2007; however Newcombe found that the album wasn't working out the way he'd hoped, and so, then decided to record the rest in Reykjavík, Iceland in October 2007. The title of the album was originally believed to be a homage to the bands My Bloody Valentine, the Velvet Underground, and the Jesus and Mary Chain, being a combination of first two names (similar to the name of the band being a portmanteau of Rolling Stones member Brian Jones and the Jonestown Massacre) and a play on track name "My Little Underground" by the Jesus and Mary Chain. However, in an interview, Anton mentioned that the word "bloody" is used in place of the word "fucking".

5. AUFHEBEN 2012
Aufheben is the twelfth studio album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was released in May 2012 on band leader Anton Newcombe's A Records label. The title of the album comes from a German word with several meanings, such as "to lift up", "to abolish" or "to preserve". In philosophy, it is used by
Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact. The cover art was taken from the Pioneer plaque of a representative depiction of humans and Earth's location in our solar system that had been engraved onto a gold-anodized aluminium plaque which was affixed to the exterior of the Pioneer 10 NASA probe. Pioneer 10 (originally designated Pioneer F) is a NASA space probe launched in 1972 that completed the first mission to the planet Jupiter. Pioneer 10 became the first of five planetary probes and 11 artificial objects to achieve the escape velocity needed to leave the Solar System.

6. POL POT'S PLEASURE PENTHOUSE 2012
Pol-Pot's Pleasure Penthouse is an album originally recorded by Anton Newcombe and possibly The
Brian Jonestown Massacre, though it is unclear if the band helped work on these recordings. Pol-Pot's Pleasure Penthouse was originally distributed on cassettes during 1990 or 1991, also going under the demo name "861-6863." Additionally, there were only 500 copies of the original cassettes made and distributed by Burger Records. The album was reissued on cassettes in 2012, then again on vinyl in 2017. The 2017 version contains the same songs as the original, but they are slower and most have been renamed. Additionally, three songs are not on the vinyl: Fade, Fade II, and Fade V.

7. REVELATION 2014
Revelation is the thirteenth studio album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was released in May 2014 on band leader Anton Newcombe's A Records label. Newcombe is joined by a scant few guests, including original BJTM member Ricky Maymi laying down a little guitar, as well as some minimal help from members of Les Big Byrd, Asteroid No. 4, and Dimmer drummer Constantine Karlis. Much
like 2012's Aufheben, Revelation is a pastiche of old and new influences, trading in some of the Krautrock influence and extended jams of the albums before it for murkier experiments with Eastern folk (as on the crumbling lo-fi acoustics and woodwinds of "Second Sighting"), ornate goth rock with subtle horn arrangements ("Fistful of Bees," "Food for Clouds"), and a whole lot of strung-out psychedelia. Worshiping at the altar of both the Stones in their most woolen production moments and the narcotic euphoria of Spacemen 3, the standout tracks on Revelation happen when Newcombe does what he does best. This album is full of a vivid spectrum of production, stylistic distractions, and psychedelic black holes for the listener to get swallowed up by.

9. MINI ALBUM THINGY WINGY 2015
With 2015's Musique de Film Imaginé, Anton Newcombe's long-running outfit, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, took an unusual detour, delivering a cerebral set of imaginary soundtrack cues that paid homage to vintage French cinema. A mere six months later, they came back with the casually named
but no less robust Mini Album Thingy Wingy. Returning to more song-based material, the seven-track collection was made in Newcombe's adopted home of Berlin and features plenty of sleekly crafted psych-pop that nods to the band's San Francisco roots while continuing to nurture their European influences. In typically eclectic BJM fashion, the collaborations here range from a Slovakian-language track from guest singer Vladimir Nosal ("Prší Prší") to a 13th Floor Elevators cover ("Dust") that features Alex Maas from Austin-based psych band the Black Angels on a tricked-out jug track.

10. THIRD WORLD PYRAMID 2016
Third World Pyramid, a somewhat meandering nine-track set that feels like an extension of their latter-
day psych-shoegaze mixture. While bandleader Anton Newcombe has always maintained a healthy output, he's been especially prolific in the years leading up to this LP, soundtracking films both real (2016's Moon Dogs) and imaginary (2015's Musique de Film Imaginé), while adding numerous BJM releases to the band's already stout catalog. Written and recorded at Newcombe's Cobra Studio in Berlin, the songs on Third World Pyramid cascade out in a textural multitude of jangling guitars, horns, and voices. Lead single "The Sun Ship" is dreamy and Beatlesque, with a robust John Lennon piano pulse and grandiose psych elements. The weirdly titled "Assignment Song" feels like anything but an
assignment, its droning majesty clocking in at nine-and-a-half minutes. The horn-assisted "Don't Get Lost" is another highlight with an almost Brit-pop vibe and plenty of freewheeling attitude. Elsewhere, things feel a bit more unfocused and loose with a pair of instrumental tracks in "Oh Bother" and "Lunar Surf Graveyard," which are pleasant if somewhat underwhelming psych jams that resemble their respective titles.

11. DON'T GET LOST 2017
Arriving a scant four months after their last full-length, Don't Get Lost finds Brian Jonestown Massacre
trekking ever further afield into the psych wilderness. Since launching his Cobra Studio in Berlin, bandleader Anton Newcombe has turned his operation into a bursting warehouse of sound, opening the floodgates to deliver a torrent of new music over the early 2010s. Bearing the name of a song from 2016's Third World Pyramid, the 14-track Don't Get Lost offers a pretty wide cross-section of BJM's
various modes, with a particular emphasis on electronic experimentations. As on many of their 2010s records, a handful of guests can be heard scattered throughout the proceedings, like singers Tess Parks, Tim Burgess, and Shaun Rivers, as well as Norwegian musician Emil Nikolaison (Serena Maneesh) and British saxophonist Pete Fraser. Immediately challenging listeners,

I "only" have 6 cds of the band. Certainly one of the best from this time. Great Kostas & thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteThe Brian Jonestown Massacre is a rare kind of band that didn't create a really bad album. Of course all their albums are not masterpieces, but they have a high level of quality.
